    Village Scene Park

    Tucked-Away Community Vibe

I’m following up on my review from over a year ago with updated insights, additional photos and a quick breakdown of HIGHLIGHTS and LOWLIGHTS:

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Convenient suburban location near Philadelphia yet surprisingly quiet; (2) Full-hookup RV sites with 30 / 50 amp, water, and sewer; (3) Affordable rates compared to other campgrounds in the region; (4) Smaller, tight-knit atmosphere with friendly long-term residents; (5) Pet-friendly, with walking areas and green space; and (6) Nearby restaurants include Franconi’s Pizzeria for classic pies and cheesesteaks and Appalachian Brewing Company with pub fare and house-brewed beers.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) Sites are narrow and can feel cramped, so don’t expect big pull-throughs; (2) Limited amenities with no pool, clubhouse, or playground; (3) Grounds feel more like a residential mobile home park than a campground; (4) Some infrastructure is dated and could use upgrades; and (5) Not much in the way of natural scenery because, um, this is urban camping.

    Happy Camping!

Atsion Family Camp — Wharton State Forest

    4x4ing in the Pine Barrens

    Atsion Family Campground

Off US 206 and about 1/2 a mile up Atsion Road in New Jersey’s Wharton State Forest, you’ll find the Atsion Family Campground. The facility is run by the Dept of Environmental Protection and offers Tent, Trailer and Group Sites. There are also Cabins for rent as well, but only available during the summer months, After Memorial Day until October. AFC is one of several campgrounds in WSF and is the largest with 50 camping sites. Amenities include a handicapped accessible restroom/shower building, several drinking water spigots, and a waste dump for trailers. There are no electric hook ups and cell service is low, but manageable. Plenty of sun (shady too) so bring your solar powered generators and cell signal boosters if you need to stay connected. AFC is also pet friendly, so bring your 4 legged furry family members, after registering them with the camp site.

The individual sites are spacious with a pic-nick table and fire ring grill. Some sites have lake-side water access, so bring your canoes and kayaks and reserve these sites (4, 8, 10, 12, 20 and 22) early as they are popular. The ground is sandy and relatively level for easy camp set up. Some sites are close to a roadway, so you do get some car noise, and like all unmonitored camp sites, loud, unruly campers can be lurking among the pines. Be sure to get your fire wood from the guy that lives across the street from the campground entrance. 5 bucks, on the honor system, a good amount of wood, open 24/7.

Nearby is the Atsion Recreation Area, which offers fishing, walking, biking and horseback trails, a life guard monitored beach by the lake with restrooms and snacks (Summer Months). Only 15 minutes away, a quick drive, is Batso Village, an old iron and glass community from the late 1700s to early 1900s. NJ State Park Rangers are working hard keeping the area clean, rehabilitated, and educational center allowing you to walk through the old buildings and time as you image what life was like back then. Wharton SF is huge, over 122,000 acres of sandy terrain, towering pine trees, lakes/rivers and off roading trails!! Y’all should come and play in the Pine Barrens

    The Loose Caboose Campground

    Quiet w/ spacious sites

No frills or extras at the campground, but great place to set up camp! This campground has spacious level sites with gravel pads, full hookups, and fire rings. A great location to stay in proximity to lots of Lancaster attractions/activities. Owners were both very helpful and friendly. The campground is currently offering a Coronavirus Camper Stimulus package (see their website for promotions) based on the PA re-opening phases when we went. This made an already affordable campground even more affordable while allowing people the opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy nature.

Some great hiking and biking trails nearby not to mention a nice area to walk in the woods at the top of the campgrounds mountain. We specifically went to two different sections of the Enola Low Grade Trail about 20 & 30 minutes away. Our favorite was along the Susquehanna River in Manor Township.

This isn't a resort, but if you need a place to wind down, have a fire w/ some peace and quiet, and camp this place is nice. Some rundown trailers and an old falling apart house in the campground that take away from it's beauty is the only reason I gave it a 4.

We have a 31' travel trailer and we had Site 62 at top of mountain which we fit into fine. The sites are mostly back-in sites. All the sites at the top were just as awesome!

    Spacious Skies Country Oaks

    Great Value Getaway!

We stayed at Country Oaks Campground in Dorothy, NJ, for a 4-day weekend. We’re so glad we did!

Our site(#15) was a pull-thru with 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable. The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine. The site included a concrete patio, picnic table, and fire ring.

The campground was clean and well-maintained. The swimming pool was large and the water crystal clear. The game room included air hockey, pinball, video games, and a few arcade games. The store was stocked with typical essentials like propane, fire wood, and snacks. Daily trash collection was a nice convenience.

The staff and camp hosts were all friendly and eager to help. We especially love that.

The majority of sites are seasonal which all seemed well kept.

The only negative was bad wifi service. Our Verizon cell signal was strong which kept us connected.

This is a great campground. Many thanks to the staff for a great stay and lots of value at Country Oaks for$65 per night. We’ll certainly go back!

    Holly Acres RV Park

This is a nice campground with plenty to do nearby.

5 Stars / Labor Day Weekend

We stayed at Holly Acres Campground in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, for Labor Day weekend. We’re so glad we did!

Our site(#A28) was a level pull-thru with 50-amp electric, water, sewer, wifi, and cable. It was roomy, shady, and easy to pull in and out. The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine. We had plenty of room to fit our car too. The site included a picnic table and fire ring.

The gated campground was clean and well-maintained. The swimming pool was inviting. The store was a bit small and date, but stocked with basic essentials like supplies, fire wood, and snacks. Most of the neighboring RVs were nice and in good shape. The park has bath facilities, a dump station on the way out, and a fishing pond.

This park is just a few minutes from the Garden State Parkway and close to Atlantic City, Brigantine, Historic Smithville, and Absecon— all within 30-minutes drive-time. You can visit casinos, the Absecon Lighthouse, and several beach towns without going far.

For Labor Day weekend, the staff walked around Jezel, a friendly horse, and hosted a BBQ in their pavilion.

This is a nice campground with plenty to do nearby. We can’t wait to go back!

    Country Acres Campground

    Clean, quiet, and really nice

Our first trip of 2023 was to Country Acres Campground in Gordonville, PA. And what a great campground to start our season! This is a great spot for visiting Pennsylvania Amish of Lancaster County and about a one-hour drive to Hersheypark.

Our site(# 837) was a good size for our motor home+ toad. It was level and covered in gravel, like all sites and roadways within the campground. Our site had full hookups, decent wi-fi, cable TV, a picnic table, fire ring, and nicely kept grassy area between sites.

Becci was super nice at check-in and check-out. They offer a 2:00 pm check-out which we enjoyed. And there are free tickets available for the Amish Farmland Bus Tour. There’s a small, basic tree at the front office. The pool wasn’t yet opened for our stay. They offered a 10% Good Sam discount(which is nice).

Bottom line: We had a great time at Country Acres Campground and can’t wait to go back!

    THINGS I LIKED:

    • Clean and well-maintained property

    • Quiet campground with friendly neighbors

    • All of the RVs appeared well-maintained with no seasonal sites

    • Easy access from Route 30

Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina

    RV Park surrounded by water!

Our first visit (March 2018) was just prior to peak season (lower rates) and we had a site literally 10 ft. from the water! Full hook ups and sites were a little close, but nice. There seemed to be a lot of long term/permanent residents, but most sites along the waterfront remained open. The campground seemed to stress pet restrictions both in the rules section of their registration packet and signage around the grounds. There was a pet exercise/walking area, but could use some sprucing up. However, no one really made an issue of walking your dog around the campground and as the weekend came around, more and more dogs were around.

You have to drive through a residential neighborhood to reach Bar Harbor, so big rigs take care/caution. Would like to try Bar Harbor again sometime.

Guide to Marcus Hook

RV campgrounds near Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania offer options for campers within a 40-mile radius. The region features relatively flat terrain with elevations under 400 feet and experiences humid subtropical summers with occasional thunderstorms. Most campgrounds in the area remain open from April through October, with a few offering year-round access for RVers.

What to do

Miniature golf courses: Lake-in-Wood Campground in Narvon features an on-site course that can provide family entertainment, though some visitors note it needs maintenance. "Miniature golf course could use some upkeep as there was trash strewn throughout the course," reports one camper who still gave the park 4 stars.

Fishing opportunities: Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina offers waterfront sites where visitors can fish directly from their campsites. "Beautiful water front sites and good location right off 95... fishing from your campsite if waterfront and an area to put in small boats or kayaks," notes a recent visitor who appreciated this unique amenity.

Live entertainment: Several parks offer scheduled entertainment, especially on weekends. Sun Valley Campground features regular performances: "The Saturday night bands are concert worthy. We have enjoyed our stay more than you ever imagined," writes one seasonal camper who has returned for four consecutive years.

What campers like

Heated pools: Many campers appreciate parks with swimming options during cooler months. Lake-in-Wood Campground offers both indoor and outdoor pools. "Heated spa/pool in upper area are a bonus. Lots of sports gear available for free to use within park," notes a visitor, though they mention equipment must be returned by 5 pm when the main office closes.

Spacious premium sites: While some campgrounds have tight spacing, certain parks offer larger site options. At Spring Gulch Resort Campground, "The Prime Sites are very spacious. Fishing pond is a joke and near by Gun Range can be annoying and tough on pets. But, over all, this place is pretty nice," writes one camper who gave the location 4 stars.

Train rides and activities: Adventure Bound Campground (formerly Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park) maintains regular activities despite ownership changes. "Dj in the rally field was fun and the train rides were up and running. The campground has def changed in the last 10 yrs. Cabin rentals are everywhere and have replaced a lot of transient camper sites," reports a repeat visitor.

What you should know

Site conditions vary significantly: Many campsites in the region can be challenging to set up on. At Sun Valley Campground, visitors note uneven terrain: "Very large park. Showed up on Wednesday, and was assigned a spot in loop 700 up on a hill in the center of a ring of trailers, past a lot of full-timers."

Seasonal resident concentration: Several RV parks near Marcus Hook have a high proportion of long-term residents. Village Scene Park in Hatfield operates year-round but primarily serves permanent residents. A visitor described it as "a hodge-podge of different living accommodations... Is this a 55+ retirement community? Yes, kind of. Trailer home park? Well, sort of."

Water quality issues: Some campgrounds experience water problems. As one Jellystone Park visitor noted, "The water stank and was straight brown," while still giving the park a 3-star rating because of other amenities like the heated pool and concrete pad at their site.

Tips for camping with families

Age restrictions for water features: Check height requirements before promising water activities to young children. At Adventure Bound Campground, "The pool and splash park were great but you needed to be at least 42 inches to go on the slide or bounce house," advises a parent who visited with a 3-year-old.

Consider craft opportunities: Several campgrounds organize family-friendly activities. Spring Gulch Resort Campground offers various options: "There was a craft show in the barn which was nice," mentions a holiday weekend camper, though they also noted the park was completely full during their Memorial Day stay.

Pet restrictions vary significantly: Some parks strictly limit pet activities. Mays Landing Resort has designated dog areas that "could use some sprucing up," according to one visitor who added, "However, no one really made an issue of walking your dog around the campground."

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: RVers should bring proper leveling equipment for parks in this region. A visitor to Mays Landing Resort noted, "Site are very unleveled so the staff switched us to a pull thru space that was a tad bit more level but still very unleveled."

Limited dump station availability: Plan accordingly for waste disposal, especially on busy weekends. Spring Gulch Resort Campground has limited facilities according to one visitor: "Only two dump stations for a pretty large park. We would camp here again but not over a holiday."

Off-season value opportunities: Several rv campgrounds near Marcus Hook offer reduced rates during shoulder seasons. Campers report fewer crowds and better site availability in late March through early May and September through October when temperatures remain moderate but activities may be limited.
