What to do
Archery practice close to camp: Turkey Swamp Park provides an archery range where campers can practice their skills. "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite! The campground was super clean too. It was perfect!" shares JAEWOOK P.
Fishing opportunities year-round: The fishing at Turkey Swamp is accessible and suitable for all skill levels. "We go every year. It has everything the outdoorsman could ask for. Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels. Ice skate on the lake in the winter or just enjoy a gorgeous walk in the woods," notes Patrick M.
Winter ice skating: When temperatures drop, Round Valley State Park Campground offers a unique winter activity. "Some of the sites are at least 3 miles to get to unless you take a boat across. Beautiful peaceful and primitive. The reservoir can turn into the Bermuda Triangle at any moment-- be careful," explains Janine W.
What campers like
Spacious and private campsites: Turkey Swamp Park offers generous sites with good separation. "Sites in Loops B-E all have pull-thru driveways. Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy. A lantern hook, picnic table, and fire ring complete each site," reports Lee D.
Clean bathroom facilities: Campers appreciate the well-maintained facilities at Brendan Byrne State Forest. "Camped here many of times. Very Decent Camp in the Pine Barrens, Lots of potable water hydrants around the campground so not far of a walk to fill any water needs you may have. Showers and bathrooms are ok, kept pretty clean. Lots of good hiking trails, most the sites have pretty decent privacy from the other ones," notes Dan M.
Waterfront sites for kayaking: Camping with water access provides unique experiences near Monroe. "I scored this a 4 because you can't beat the price for area. However my biggest issue is the sand for all pull-throughs. They do offer full hookups that include cable if you have the outdoor wire. Plenty of activities for kids with park area and pool. They do also offer golf cart rental for those wanting explore the park," reports Robyn W. about Timberland Lake Campground.
What you should know
Tick awareness is important: The wooded areas around Monroe can have ticks, especially in warmer months. "I was so excited when we got here. The sites are spacious and it's really beautiful. But by the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2. That was so crazy because we were just sitting by our camper," warns LAURA Y.
Showerhouse limitations: Some campgrounds have basic shower facilities. "The bathrooms and showers here were in really good condition, well cleaned and stocked, and was pleasant to use! The campsites are a little bit close to each and didnt offer much privacy but they were right in top of each other," reports Dorian P. about Brendan Byrne State Forest.
Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds. "Went last minute and was helped on the phone at 9:20pm and then checked in while I arrived," notes Felix L. about Timberland Lake Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Multiple activity options: Families appreciate campgrounds with diverse recreation choices. "Turkey Swamp is a great spot, a lot of different things to do. Fishing, Tent Camp, Van Camping, Open Field, BBQ, Kayaking, Canoeing. The list goes on. I've been here a few times, every time I'm here I barely touch my phone," shares Tylen L.
Kid-friendly swimming areas: Spruce Run Recreation Area offers a designated swimming beach with lifeguards in summer. "You can bring a camper, tent, or use one of the cabins. Many sites have a lovely water view of the reservoir. Several playgrounds, boat launches, and life guarded swimming area," explains Jocelyn G.
Glamping options for easier family trips: For families seeking glamping close to Monroe, New Jersey, several parks offer comfortable alternatives to tent camping. "This may be my favorite spot. I have stayed in all the spots they offer, yurt, cabin and the pull up sites. It is well maintained with numerous trails to hike. Getting a cabin in the winter and going for a snowy hike is wonderful there," says Patrick M. about Allaire State Park.
Tips from RVers
Water and hookup access: RV campers should note the various hookup options. "Plenty to do over a 2 night stay. Archery, boating, fishing, and hiking. Boat rental rates are acceptable and there are four different styles to choose from. Campsites are roomy with electric and water hookups. They don't have primitive campsites so your stuck paying the higher rate even though you don't need the hookups," advises Dan W.
Site leveling considerations: Many campgrounds in the area have level sites. "We stayed at Adventure Bound Tall Pines in Elmer, New Jersey, for Memorial Day weekend for a quick getaway. Despite reserving and paying for a 'Premium' site, it fell far short. But there were still a few things we liked," shares Matt S.
Reservation recommendations: Book well in advance for RV sites with hookups, especially during summer weekends and holidays when glamping options close to Monroe, New Jersey fill quickly. "My wife and I, residing near the Commodore Barry, sought a brief respite. Our thirteen-year-old son was unable to join us, so we proceeded without him. We secured site 53, a deluxe site offering ample space for our 29VBUD and Ram," notes Howard P. from Adventure Bound Camping.
