Cabins near Pomme de Terre State Park offer a range of accommodation options beyond traditional tent camping. The Pittsburgh side features both basic and modern cabin setups with varying proximity to the lake and marina. Water accessibility varies by cabin location, with some offering direct waterfront access.
What to do
Hiking trails accessible from cabin areas: At Pittsburg Park Campground, trails provide scenic lake views and wildlife viewing opportunities. "Only one real hiking trail on Pittsburgh loop but it was filled with bluff views and lots of wildlife as well as a public beach," notes Josh S.
Water activities beyond swimming: Riverfront Campground and Canoe offers float trips on the Niangua River directly from their cabin area. "The float trips on the Niangua are gorgeous. I recommend going on a weekday to avoid the crowds," according to Jason W.
Winter cabin options: While most cabin rentals focus on summer activities, several locations remain open year-round. "We went there for opening day 2018!" mentions Felicia H. about Bennett Spring State Park Campground, which maintains cabin availability during colder months.
What campers like
Proximity to multiple water bodies: Many cabin locations provide access to both lake and river systems. "We stayed at loop 300, 317 which is a family site. Daughter and her family joined us with a tent and we had our 31 ft 5th wheel," reports Deb L. from Pittsburg Park Campground.
Privacy between sites: The layout at some cabin areas creates natural separation. "Most of the sites are fairly private, the facilities are nice and clean, great playground. The swimming area is a little small but still a good area," explains Bryan C.
Year-round fishing access: Cabin rentals offer strategic locations for various fishing opportunities. "This has become our favorite family campground. The sites on the lake are awesome and large. The showers are clean and private. Fishing is great! My kids love it too!" says tiffany H.
What you should know
Seasonal popularity impacts reservation windows: During peak periods, cabin reservations require significant advance planning. "The Hermitage and The Pittsburgh. We chose the 400 loop of Pittsburgh for its secluded spots. Spaces are not stacked on top of each other. You're in the woods so take bug spray," advises Cindy K.
Terrain considerations for tent/cabin combinations: Some cabin sites accommodate additional tenting but present challenges. "The site was on quite an incline & there were lots of rocks under our tent. I would not recommend this site," shares Jessica B.
Elevation impacts water views: Water levels fluctuate seasonally, affecting cabin proximity to shorelines. Mountain Creek Campground reports: "You can float as long as 10 miles, or as few as 4 (maybe even less). There is a water slide that's so fun."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Some cabin locations feature dedicated children's areas. "We stayed here over the 4th of July holiday, at the Pittsburg campground at the state park. Loop 3 campsite 317. I loved the trail to the lake! The swimming beach was amazing and the bathrooms well-kept," reports Rebecca R.
Cabin size variations: Family-sized accommodations differ significantly between locations. "From the moment we checked in til we checked out everyone was wonderful. The cabins don't look like much from the outside, but inside they are wonderful," notes Amanda M.
Educational opportunities: B Berry Farms & Co offers unique cabin stays with berry picking access. "We enjoyed picking black berries right next to our campsite to have with breakfast in the morning," shares Nick S.
Tips from RVers
Dumping station locations: For cabins with limited bathroom facilities, know where to empty portable toilets. "All the RV sites are electric/water so you have to use the on site dump station," explains Ken K. about Riverfront Campground.
Seasonal site leveling: Winter and spring conditions can affect cabin access roads. "We have a 40' Renegade Verona and it took 6 tries to find a place near the hookups where our auto-level would find a good position (no 'excessive slope' error)," advises Angela M.
Weather impact on cabin approach: Access roads to some cabin areas can become challenging during wet periods. "I stayed at the Pullin on over campsite, and it was nice. They supplied wood and were even nice enough to bring me some free samples of the lip balm and fragrances they sell," reports Hannah H.
