    Fish Lake Acres Campground

    Quiet, Lake Views

This campground is great especially when compared with state park camping. Full hookups available, quite a few pull through lots and close to the twin cities! No wifi, so make sure you've got decent cell service and hotspot if you need internet/wifi. Verizon gets ok coverage here, T-Mobile does too. Showers/bathhouses are clean and the hot water runs forever and not coin operated or push button like some others I've been to! Bonus! Good toilet paper in the bathrooms not the cheap stuff. The lake is literally out your door and they do have a small swimming beach and boat launch. MN Horse and Hunt club is about a mile or so up a trail access that is Almosy directly across from the camp entrance. There is an ATM there along with a bar and restaurant. Be prepared to hear gunshots regularly but it's not really bothersome unless you aren't prepared for it. The trail to the club is safe to walk though. The campground ONLY accepts cash so be sure to hit the ATM before you get here. They also charge $2 extra per dog if you have them. Nightly rate for the full hookup site I had was $32 with the dog. They charge .50 c per log for firewood. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. The staff are really nice and laid back. It's a really nice little campground!

    Ham Lake Resort

Well Rounded RV Park and Campground

My partner and I scheduled a 3 day / 2 night stay in a new Vintage Cruiser RV for $39.99, in exchange for attending a presentation on private membership.

We checked in Wednesday evening, and the nicest staff I've ever met helped us acclimate to RV living. We are new to this game. They patiently described how to utilize the grey and black water tanks, as well as encouraged us to check-out the canoes, row boats, bikes, horseshoes, ladder golf and many other entertainment items - for FREE!

The map provided was accurate which made locating the cruiser a breeze. There were further instructions inside as well. The RV was immaculate. Provided for our use were all linens (a public very clean bath and shower was just across the road), dish soap, dish towels, paper towels, flat wear, plates, bowls, mugs and pans.

The campground has a couple of ponds, as well as access to Ham Lake where the watercraft is launched. There is a petting arena with goats, ponies, and a llama who gave my partner the stink eye, but fell in love with me rubbing the fence and giving me all googly eyes!

The clubhouse sells bundled wood, ice, snacks, cold drinks, ice cream and provides 24-hour fresh coffee. There is also a small resupply area, and gift shop.

There are pull-through sites, back ups, 50 and 30 amp hook ups, and tent sites, covered pavilions, picnic tables and fire pits.

The campground itself seems remote, secluded and peaceful, however, you are conveniently located to two well-stocked convenience stores, as well as Wal-Mart about 15 minutes away. It's also only about 45 minutes from the Minnesota Twin Cities.

One note: We visited in August and needed gallons of bug spray.

We very much enjoyed our get away!

    Ann Lake

    Rustic & Family Friendly

This is a great little rustic campground within an hour's drive of the Twin Cities! It has several potable water sources throughout the campground, but no running water for toilets or showers. There are several vault toilets. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring. You can buy firewood & ice at the Sand Dunes Stop gas station, just a 10 minutes drive away.

This is a first-come, first-served campground, so no reservations required. This does mean that there is a chance you won't be able to get a site, but I've only had that happen one time when I got there at 6pm on a Saturday. There are usually sites available.

I love going to this campground - it's family friendly, and there is a swimming beach a quick 3 minute drive away! The hiking trails aren't half bad, either! I love coming here to relax for a weekend, spend some time at the beach, and just enjoy nature. If you go in the early to mid summer, you'll also hear local whip-poor-wills serenade you to sleep.

Overall, 4 stars. The only downsides are no running water and no ice & firewood at the campground itself.

    Spirit of Ripley

    Small and family owned

Nice large grass pads, easily accessible for big rigs! Close to the lake(mom and I went for some bike rides around the lake) and public boat access. Each site had a picnic table and a fire ring provided. All sites have power, water, and sewer hook ups.

    Lebanon Hills Regional Park

    Friendly staff & quiet

Great location for easy access to mountain bike trails. Friendly staff. Clean facilities. Nice trail within the campground. Some sites are more shaded than others in the east loop so look at photos if you want shade. Sites that back up to the green space are very sunny. 87 is a great site! Plenty of space for a trailer or tent with a private “nook” for the fire pit.

    Lake Elmo County Park Reserve

    Great for the kiddos

For a County Park, Lake Elmo has an impressive list of amenities. Before we even get to the campsite let's mention the filtered swimming pond. This man made pond is a sandy bottom and surrounded by a nice sand beach. Large built in umbrellas are available for sun coverage and there is a concession stand and bathrooms with showers. And yes, as I mentioned the water is filtered! No gross goose poop or green algae to deal with! Next to the swim pond is a giant playground with fun for the big and little kids. Other amenities include archery, horse trails, paved and grass trails, camper spots, rustic spots and hike in camping spots. In winter the xc ski trails are lit for evening skiing. Or let's be honest early afternoon. It is Minnesota and the suns down by 4 In the Winter! They also have a newer Nordic center that's open all year round and includes a locker room with showers. The hike in camp spot we chose was on a small lake so it had a nice breeze and made it easy to bring a kayak or paddleboard and hop right in. There is also a boat launch for your larger toys! The trails in the park are quite impressive for its size. We enjoyed a 5 mile loop off the Nordic center and right past the camp spot. A picnic table and fire pit as well as nice flat tent pad were provided. If you're coming in from out of town then you're just a 5 minute drive from Woodbury and all the amenities you'd ever need but the park feels miles away from it all.

    Minneapolis Northwest KOA

    Good Campground but Close Sites

Sites are close to each other, but easy access, clean grounds and facilities, friendly staff, and a K9 fenced area for a pet friendly campground.

    Masonic West River Park

    Riverfront!!

Amazing campsite! Sites are large and grassy! We had a lakeview site right off the paved walking/biking trail with room for a large tent and the pop-up camper. Fire ring and picnic table provided. A man drives through the campsite close to dusk to sell firewood as there is no traditional office. Bathrooms and showers are located near the dump station and dumpster. Be on the lookout for the code for the doors during your reservation process. We had missed it and had to ask a neighbor if they knew the codes so we could shower.

Guide to Elk River

The Elk River area lies at an elevation of about 900 feet above sea level, with the Mississippi River forming its eastern boundary. Summer camping temperatures typically range between 55-85°F, with occasional thunderstorms from June through August. Most campgrounds near Elk River remain open from early May through mid-October, offering various recreational options beyond standard RV accommodations.

What to do

River recreation: Country Camping RV Park provides tubing opportunities on the Rum River, a local favorite for summer visitors. "Great tubing and canoeing," notes camper Rory T., highlighting the clean, sandy river bottom that enhances water activities. The park operates a bus service that transports tubers upstream. "They have a bus that takes you into town float back to the campground, love it," explains Tom D.

Mini golf and games: St. Cloud-Clearwater RV Park offers a 9-hole mini golf course, shuffleboard courts, and indoor games. "It has a 9 hole mini golf, shuffleboard, salt water pool, and a lobby/gift shop. They also offer a nice seating area for those hot or raining days with free arcade," writes S L., detailing the recreational options available.

Biking trails: Baker Campground features paved trails around multiple lakes, perfect for family cycling adventures. "There is a nice 6+mile biking trail that connects to others, so bring the bikes," advises Jennifer H. The interconnected trail system provides extended riding options for campers seeking longer routes.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Country Camping Tent & RV Park receives consistent praise for its generously sized campsites. "Large sites. Great tubing and canoeing," shares Rory T. Another camper, Spencer C., elaborates: "HUGE sites! You can either relax in the pool or even take a ride down the rum river in a rented canoe, tube, or kayak."

Water features: Multiple campgrounds offer water recreation beyond swimming. "Key thing is the river is very clean and sandy bottom," notes David G. about Country Camping. The heated pools are particularly appreciated during cooler periods, with Beasty B. mentioning the "heated pool and splash pad area" that keeps younger campers entertained.

Natural settings: RiversEdge RV Park provides wooded sites with views of either the river or a wildlife pond. "Large wooded lots, most facing the river or wildlife pond," describes Tori K., noting the "lush lawns and nice walking paths with colorful gardens" that enhance the natural environment.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most rv sites near Elk River, Minnesota close during winter months. Country Camping RV Park operates from May 1 to October 1, while St. Cloud Campground runs from May 1 to October 10. Some parks like Baker Campground extend slightly longer, operating from April 30 to October 20.

Site variations: Campground layouts differ significantly across the region. At St. Cloud Campground & RV Park, "the site itself was nice and had decent spacing between sites, but I noticed some of the other sites were quite close," reports Tina, highlighting the variability within a single facility.

WiFi challenges: Connectivity issues affect multiple campgrounds. "It was the worst wifi of about 15 campgrounds we've been to on our trip this year. They warned us it was slow, but we couldn't even connect to it from our site," notes Tina about St. Cloud Campground. Dave P. confirms this: "Host stated that the wifi was weak but since there were not a lot of campers we should be alright. We were unable to even get a signal!"

Limited overnight options: For those seeking quick overnight camping spots near Elk River, options exist but with tradeoffs. "Stayed here kind of last minute on my way home and wanted electric hook ups," shares Tori K. about Love's RV Hookup, noting its winter availability when other campgrounds close for the season.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Baker Campground offers numerous family activities within walking distance. "With great fishing, playground, swimming, and biking trails very nearby, the kids were kept as busy as they wanted to be," explains Bryan S. The campground includes two swimming beaches - one dedicated to campers and another for day visitors.

Entertainment options: Several camping areas near Elk River provide structured activities for children. "I stayed here 3 weeks ago with my wife and 2 young children and it was fantastic great playground and heated pool the spaces were well kept and spaced apart 10-10 would most defiantly go again! A ton for the kids to do!" shares Beasty B. about Country Camping.

Off-site deliveries: Some campgrounds allow food deliveries, a convenient option for families. Barbara B. notes, "You can even get pizza delivered by the local Chanticlear Pizza!" at Country Camping, providing a meal alternative when cooking becomes tiresome.

Tips from RVers

Electrical considerations: During peak summer heat, electrical systems at some rv sites near Elk River, Minnesota may become strained. "Had one issue with power dropping so we had to pull the surge protector off. It was fine. Also very hot and humid so everyone was running AC to the max," reports David G., suggesting surge protectors might be helpful equipment.

Site selection priorities: Boulder Woods RV Park offers mature trees in a park-like setting. "The park is well maintained with power and water at all sites," notes Laura P., though she cautions the park "is not on the banks of the lake and does not have access to the lake" despite having lake views.

Seasonal site options: For extended stays, Mississippi Riverwood RV Park operates on a different model than traditional campgrounds. "This hidden gem is a PRIVATE RV Park where each lot is individually owned and most owners live South in the winter. Individual owners can rent their lot with restrictions," explains Dan O., detailing the ownership-based structure that differs from standard campgrounds.
