What to do
Wildlife viewing: Lake Maria State Park offers excellent opportunities for spotting wildlife in its diverse habitats. "The fun thing about this state park is that all the sites are hike in. No drive up camping. It has a couple camper cabins as well. But everyone is spread out along a few trails so it's a little quieter than your typical campground," notes Steph H. The park's wooded areas are home to many species including pileated woodpeckers and red squirrels.
Hiking trails: Baker Campground - Baker Park Reserve features an extensive network of trails suitable for all skill levels. "There are nice paved trails around a couple of lakes/ponds for biking, and easy access to the shower and bathroom facilities (which were very nice)," according to ERolf P. The trails wind through wooded areas and alongside several small lakes.
Water activities: Most cabins in the area provide access to lakes or rivers for swimming, fishing, and boating. At Lake Maria State Park Campground, "Site B6 feels like a secret woodland sanctuary — set up on a slight rise, tucked beneath a cathedral of towering oaks and maples... It's close enough to Lake Maria's best hiking trails and just a short walk to the lake itself, where you can sit on a log and watch wood ducks paddle past," reports Alison O.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many cabin campers appreciate the seclusion offered at certain locations. At Bunker Hills Regional Park, "For being in the middle of the northern suburbs of Minneapolis, this park and campground is surprisingly woodsy, secluded and spacious. There are both primitive (tent) non-electric sites, and sites with electricity, even some 50 amp," writes Doug B. The park includes several camper cabins set apart from other camping areas.
Clean facilities: Across multiple campgrounds, reviewers consistently mention well-maintained bathroom and shower facilities. At Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park, "The check in staff was friendly, helpful and efficient. She gave us the info we needed for wood and other campgrounds in the area. Our site was clear, flat and grassy, and had an established fire pit," says kristin C.
Lake views: Several cabins offer direct views or access to water. A visitor to River Terrace Park notes, "The campground is right on the Mississippi River with great views. The sites are somewhat small, but decent." These riverside cabins provide opportunities for wildlife viewing and water activities.
What you should know
Bug preparation: Minnesota's lakes and woods mean insects are abundant, especially in summer. At Lake Maria State Park, one camper warns: "When we pulled up to the parking lot we knew we were in trouble. The black flies were dive bombing the car like a scene from Armageddon. We prepared the kiddos for a quick grab and run and jumped out of the car." Pack repellent, permethrin-treated clothing, and consider timing your visit for early spring or fall.
