Addison Oaks County Park's Section D provides heavily wooded, private campsites for tent and RV camping about 35 miles north of Warren. The park features 26 miles of biking trails with many paved sections suitable for families. Winter visitors should note most campground facilities close from late October through April, though the park remains open for day use.
What to do
Disc golf adventures: The 18-hole course at Addison Oaks County Park offers technical play through wooded terrain. "I enjoyed the trails, disc golf and overall wonderful Park staff! Extremely clean and well-kept," notes Joe S., who gave the park five stars.
Mountain biking trails: Miles of dirt paths off the main paved trails provide challenging rides for cyclists. At Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, "Extensive mountain biking trails and the lake is open to boating, kayaking, and other water sports," according to Mary H., who appreciated the park's many recreational options.
Kayaking opportunities: The Huron River at Proud Lake offers paddling routes suitable for beginners and experienced kayakers. "The site was nice, a little small, but clean and fun (would be nice if your pets were allowed to swim also)," mentions Jennifer O. about the water access at local parks.
What campers like
Private, wooded sites: Section D at Addison Oaks offers more seclusion than other camping areas. "This was our first time camping. The park has a beautiful 2.5 mile trail around the lake that makes this campground great. Our spot #18 I felt was spacious and not too close to the people next to us and trees behind us," shares Karen C.
Clean facilities: Modern restrooms and newly renovated shower buildings receive consistent praise from visitors. At Proud Lake Recreation Area, "The bathrooms are BEAUTIFUL. They must have been recently renovated because they are spacious, tiled, well maintained, and very modern feeling for a campground," according to Jennifer O.
Wildlife viewing: Early morning and evening hours offer the best chances to spot local wildlife. "We stayed in one of the group sites and it was beautiful. Less tree cover than we would have liked, you're basically in a giant grassy field, but it was perfect for a large group," explains Jennifer O., highlighting the different camping environments available.
What you should know
Campsite selection tips: Sites in Area C at Addison Oaks feature cement pads with water and electric hookups. "Nice quick weekend retreat campground. Cement pads, water, and electric. Loop C is spacious with some trees," says Ron E. about his 4-star experience.
Seasonal activities: Many parks offer special themed weekends, particularly in fall. At Holly Recreation Area, "Downside is that the campground and stuff to do, are far apart. Bring a bike or drive. Beach is nice. Has a water park on the lake," advises Ethan R.
Reservation requirements: Book early for summer weekends, especially holiday periods. "I've stayed at Addison Oaks campground many times over a few decades. It's clean and mostly quiet. A nice relaxing park. The park offers nice holiday activities - we were last there for Halloween camping," shares Barb L.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple play areas throughout Addison Oaks accommodate different age groups. "Tons of trails for hiking and biking. They have kids activities on the weekends, a lake for swimming, great playgrounds and everything is really clean," says Wendy K.
Family-friendly events: Many campgrounds host scheduled activities for children on summer weekends. At Haas Lake Park, "Great area to be with friends. The round area's with the sites on the outside and common area on the inside make for a great group type setup," explains Gary E.
Dog friendly campgrounds near Warren: Most parks welcome pets with standard leash rules, but check individual campground policies. "We stayed in area A in a water/electric site. It was a Boo Fest weekend. Lots of socially distanced activities for the kids and a scavenger hunt (finding clues on signs in park to solve a mystery)," shares Tim & Nancy C. about their experience at a pet-friendly park.
Tips from RVers
Hookup locations: Electrical connections at some sites may require long extension cords. At Algonac State Park Campground, "Since staffing levels are low for off season I could understand that, but please take care to clean them. Cob webs, old dead insects, and dilapidated doors and decor showed severe signs of use and neglect," reports Rodger M. about off-season facilities.
Road conditions: Some park access roads have potholes and ruts that may impact larger RVs. "Next, we were super excited to bring our brand new trailer to camp here but could not believe the disrepair of the campground roads. Sooo many ruts that I was deeply concerned for the undercarriage of both my truck and camper," warns Rodger M.
Pet-friendly RV sites: Loop C at Addison Oaks accommodates large rigs with pets. "Always been a great trip. Good sites I have stayed in both area B and C. Great hiking trails easy access. Friendly staff," recommends Gary E. about the pet-accommodating campgrounds.
