Best Campgrounds near Saugatuck, MI

The small town of Saugatuck in Michigan draws many campers to its beach areas and nearby woods. Warren Dunes State Park Campground sits about 30 minutes south, with sites tucked among the tall sand dunes and walking paths to Lake Michigan. Campers heading north can stay at Muskegon State Park Campground, which has both wooded sites and others closer to the water. Hoffmaster State Park Campground has well-maintained trails running through the woods and down to the beach. Many of these parks have playground equipment that keeps kids busy when they're not swimming. Summer weekends get pretty full at most campgrounds in the area, so mid-week visits mean fewer neighbors. Black bears aren't common, but raccoons will definitely raid coolers left out overnight. Check whether you need permits for fishing or beach fires before your trip. Most campground roads are paved and in good shape, though some hiking trails wash out after heavy rain. Book your spot at least a few weeks ahead during June through August. Late spring through early fall works best for camping here, with September offering warm days without the crowds.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

    Great tent camping destination

We really enjoyed our two nights tent camping at Kal Haven Outpost! The management is great, and the restrooms are very clean and the sites were really well designed. We love the wooded camping sites that we used in the four of us. Had a great time. We brought our bikes and use the trail for several miles. It was so peaceful and relaxing, and a great way to get away.

    Drews Country Camping

    Rustic Backyard Camping Charm

This is a sweet little family-owned park just outside Holland with about 30 grassy sites that feel more like someone’s big backyard than an actual campground. The place has been around since 1981, and while you’ll notice some older RVs parked around the edges and a slightly dumpy vibe overall, it’s still cared for with pride with fairly clean restrooms (in a building that looks like it was built in the 1930s), a small playground where the boys burned off energy, and a pool that (full disclosure) sits right up front near the highway so it feels a bit awkward, but still fun on a hot day. Our boys made fast friends, turning a simple game of tag into a neighborhood adventure before we strolled into town for cones at the Polka Dot Ice Cream Parlor and a sunset walk along 8th Street. I’d recommend Drew’s to families for its homey feel, fairly well-maintained facilities despite the vintage look, and the friendly mix of full-timers and travel-campers that keeps things relaxed and welcoming.

    Fisherman's Landing & Campground

Classic Michigan Sunsets with Lakefront Views

Nestled along the shores of Muskegon Lake, Fisherman’s Landing Launch & Campground hums with the easy rhythm of boats, endless laughter and evening campfires over s’mores. It’s a city-run spot with around a hundred sites, a marina close at hand and the kind of well-worn facilities that feel lived-in but cared for with clean restrooms, warm showers and a big playground that kept the boys busy while my husband wrestled with the fishing rods. We spent sunset on the dock, toes trailing in the water as the boys skipped stones and tried to out-cheer one another. I’d recommend Fisherman’s Landing to families who appreciate a laid-back lakeside stay, friendly folks and those golden Michigan summer evenings that end with the smell of water and woodsmoke.

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Lakeshore Campground at Muskegon State Park

Staying in the north loop of the Lakeshore campground. Sites were level and shaded by mature trees. Road is a bit narrow which made backing out travel trailer in a bit tricky, not impossible. Family friendly campground that is a couple hundred feet away from Lake Michigan. Will definitely come back.

Beach Campground — Holland State Park

    Entry policy needs revising

Got to campground at 13:00, checked to see if my reserved site was vacant (it was vacant) then went to check in. Attendant told couldn’t check in until 15:00. Had to park in marina parking lot.  Went back to check in and there was a line out to the street (safety issue).  It then took us 1/2 hr to check in then had to wait another 1/2hr in line for water. Got to site at 16:15.  Something has to change. Was told this was a Holland State Park decision because other state parks don’t do this.  Horrible, horrible policy

Guide to Saugatuck

Campsites near Saugatuck, Michigan range from full-service resorts to rustic woodland settings, all within 30 miles of this popular Lake Michigan destination. The area sits on glacial moraines that create the distinctive dunes and varied terrain campers encounter. Local campgrounds experience average summer highs around 80°F with nighttime temperatures dropping to the 50s, even during peak season.

What to do

Bike the Kal-Haven Trail: Located about 25 miles south of Saugatuck, this rail-trail offers 33 miles of packed limestone surface for cycling. "We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail," notes one Kal-Haven Outpost visitor. The trail connects South Haven to Kalamazoo with multiple access points.

Beach access options: Holland State Park offers direct beach entry from their campground. "The best thing about the beach campground is it's closer to Lake Michigan & the campground has beach access," explains a camper at Beach Campground — Holland State Park. The park enforces rules about dogs and bikes on the beach.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple ponds and lakes provide fishing throughout the region. At TriPonds, "The fishing pond has a lot of bass. My son has caught one every time we've been here. Catch and release only," reports a regular visitor. Some campgrounds host fishing tournaments with small prizes, especially for children.

What campers like

Clean bathroom facilities: Many campgrounds maintain exceptional facilities. "The showers are individual & we had no trouble getting one in the late afternoon. They look recently remodeled & were SUPER clean!" shares a reviewer about Kal-Haven Outpost. Hot showers are particularly appreciated after beach days.

Large tent sites: Some campgrounds offer spacious tent camping areas. "The tent camping had the largest campsite I've ever camped on for tents. You can choose between no shade, some shade, or deep woods," notes a camper at Kal-Haven Outpost. This provides options based on preference for sun exposure.

Full hookup options: Oak Grove Resort & Campground provides complete services for RVs. "I believe all the sites are full hookup, cable t.v. and wi/fi. Less than a mile to Lake Michigan and close to boat launch and Lake Macatawa," explains a camper. These amenities make longer stays more comfortable.

What you should know

Alcohol policies vary: Some state parks prohibit alcohol entirely. At Holland State Park, "there is a 'no alcohol' policy in the park and campground and you have to sign a piece of paper saying you will abide by that rule. The rule states that 'Possessing or consuming alcohol is prohibited in all areas of the park throughout the entire year' even inside your RV." Private campgrounds typically allow alcohol.

Reservation timing matters: State parks fill quickly, especially on weekends. "This is a tough park to get into in the warm months. The back up to get in is crazy," warns a Holland State Park camper. Book popular campgrounds 6 months ahead for summer weekends.

Site surfaces differ: Some campgrounds have paved sites while others are natural. At Ely Lake Campground, "All of the sites are rustic. There are no bathrooms, just pit toilets. There is no electricity." Beach campgrounds often restrict tent placement: "The campground is entirely on asphalt. You're not allowed to put anything on the sand- including tents!"

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Several campgrounds offer extensive recreation options. "We enjoyed having a pond, pool, playground, jump pillow and more!" shares a TriPonds Family Camp Resort visitor. Some even include petting zoos and organized weekend activities.

Campground noise levels: Some locations experience nighttime disturbances. One Ely Lake camper warns: "It is a wonderful experience until about 10:30 PM on Friday and Saturday night. This place attracts a rowdy crowd and in the evenings there is loud music, people yelling, fireworks going off and not very much sleep." Choose sites away from common areas for quieter sleeping.

Beach proximity considerations: Walking distance to beaches varies significantly. "Family of 5 (3 kids under 6) looking for a reasonably close place to Lake Michigan. Oak Grove was the perfect stay for us! Best part was the 10 min bike ride along Lake Macatawa shoreline to Holland State park," explains a family camper. Consider transportation options if camping with small children.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Most RV sites near Saugatuck require minimal leveling. "All sites were level. Every site has a picnic table," notes a Holland State Park visitor. However, some campgrounds with natural surfaces may need leveling blocks after rain.

Pull-through availability: Dutch Treat Camping & Recreation offers easy-access sites. "Campsites are easy to get into with plenty of room to get situated," according to a visitor. For larger rigs, "Drove in with our class A pulling a trailer and called ahead, friendly staff was able to accommodate us with a pull through spot that was easy access."

Water fill locations: Some campgrounds have centralized water stations. At Holland State Park, "There's a double dump station & that's where you also fill up your water tanks." Plan extra time during busy check-in periods, as one camper noted: "Had to wait another 1/2hr in line for water."
