Bald Mountain Recreation Area cabins accommodate pets year-round in a natural setting with maintained trails and lake access. Pet owners appreciate the well-marked paths and multiple clean, accessible lakes perfect for dogs who enjoy water. The two rustic cabins sleep 10-15 people and feature wood-burning stoves though they lack electricity or heat. Pets must be leashed on trails, and the recreation area maintains strict pet waste policies to preserve the natural environment. Addison Oaks County Park's pet-friendly campground provides electric hookups and water at generously sized sites with sufficient privacy for pets, especially in the heavily wooded section D where neighboring campers are not visible.

Trails throughout both parks offer excellent pet exercise opportunities with Addison Oaks featuring 26 miles of biking and hiking paths, many paved for easy walking with leashed dogs. The 2.5-mile trail around Addison Oaks lake provides a peaceful route for morning dog walks. Wildlife sightings include deer and rabbits, particularly at dusk, so keeping pets secured is important. Neither location offers swimming beaches for dogs, though Addison Oaks permits boating and fishing. Camp Agawam provides an alternative option closer to Lake Orion with tent sites that accommodate pets, plus a playground, fishing access, and an outdoor amphitheater. Most campgrounds in the area require pets to be leashed at all times, properly supervised, and limited to designated pet-friendly areas to maintain cleanliness and respect for other campers.

      Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

      Private camping

Very private sites. I was surprised at how well each site was hidden from the others. Restrooms can be a bit far from some sites. Nice little dog park by the beach too.

      Clear Water Campgrounds

      Love, love, love this campground.

This is a quiet, friendly and family campground. The staff is very willing to help any way they can. The sites are level and spacious.

A great place for the kids! With a beach, playground and paved roads is nice but the frosting in this cake is the petting zoo. Animals from bunnies, peacocks & cats to horses, goats and of course Milton the burro, get it? Milton Burro, LOL

The store has stuff for the kids at very reasonable prices and the ice cream shop across the street is a nice walk after dinner. There's a light there for safe crossing, too.

Try this place, you'll add this to your good memories.

No credit or debit cards. Cash and checks only.

      Clearwater Campground

      Nice!

A fun little campground with a nice bunch of petting zoo type animals! The beach is clean and the lake is warm! Very nice layout with walking trail around the lake. The only complaint was not nearly enough trash cans around (like, none easy to find) and the bathrooms were nasty for our 2 day visit. Price per night for full hook up was $40 :-)

Bathrooms were dated and we arrived Monday after Labor Day so I can't judge them. They had a FULL HOUSE on Labor Day per the front gate. I was very impressed there was no garbage at campsites and picked up very well.

GREAT biking trails you can catch on premise and bike over to Kensington and to the charming town of Milford

      Port Huron KOA

      Commercialized

If you like this type of camping then this theme park camping is for you. It's right in town with sparse trees and very small sites. Make sure to mark the max allowed occupancy to be camping because, if you don't, you will be charged extra cash for your child to spend the day with you while spending money on their amenities. They do have a little amusement park right next door so that can help entertain the young ones for a while and we did appreciate the dog park. It's not a horrible place as we did enjoy ourselves the first visit there. The campsite we had was in the back, between 2 cabins, and that one was actually a decent size. The 2nd trip was a bummer as we were reprimanded for having my girlfriends daughter show up and have breakfast with us. Which, by the way, we bought from the and she shopped in their souvenir store and purchased items. We had to pay another $5 so we could spend that extra money at their campground. Other than that, enjoy.

    Guide to Lake Orion

Bald Mountain Recreation Area offers two rustic cabins that sleep 10-15 people year-round. These cabins lack electricity and heat but contain wood-burning stoves for winter use. The recreation area covers 4,637 acres with multiple lakes and 15 miles of marked hiking trails. Nearby Addison Oaks County Park provides more developed camping options with electric hookups and water at sites that offer privacy, especially in the heavily wooded section D.

    What to do

Disc golf courses: Addison Oaks County Park features a popular disc golf course among its recreational facilities. "I enjoyed the trails, disc golf and overall wonderful Park staff! Extremely clean and well-kept," notes Joe S., who visited the park.

Water recreation: Pontiac Lake Recreation Area offers boating, kayaking and swimming access, though campers should note the distance from campsites to water. "The lake is not within walking distance, you would need to drive," explains Renee R. For families with children, Holly State Recreation Area includes "a splash zone for kids" according to Kate K., who adds that the area "features a campground, 3 lakes, tons of trails" for visitors.

Mountain biking: The region contains numerous biking trails for various skill levels. "Extensive mountain biking trails and the lake is open to boating, kayaking, and other water sports," mentions Mary H. about Pontiac Lake Recreation Area. The trails at Proud Lake are described by Syed M. as "not the easiest but they are not so challenging that you won't have fun."

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate sites that offer seclusion despite the developed nature of the campgrounds. At Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area, "The spots are all pretty private due to trees and vegetation," according to Sam H. Similarly, at Holly State Recreation Area, campers note you're "far enough from people to where you don't really see a lot of them or hear them that often besides people walking by," as Ashley F. describes.

Clean facilities: The campgrounds maintain well-kept bathrooms and shower facilities. Proud Lake Recreation Area receives praise for its "beautiful" bathrooms that "must have been recently renovated because they are spacious, tiled, well maintained, and very modern feeling for a campground," according to Jennifer O. At Holly State, Jennifer H. notes that "The bathrooms were clean" and mentions "several playgrounds, bench swings, play fields and even a basketball court."

Wildlife sightings: The area supports diverse wildlife viewing opportunities. Karen C. from Addison Oaks reports, "We saw deer and rabbit" while exploring the park's 2.5-mile trail around the lake. This complements the natural setting that makes the region's campgrounds appealing for nature observation.

    What you should know

Site reservations: Some campgrounds have specific reservation systems or site assignment procedures. At The Holly Campground, "You can not reserve a site, you're assigned one when you arrive so you'll have to hope you get one that will fit your needs," explains Ken D.

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate seasonally, though a few remain open year-round. Addison Oaks County Park operates from "May 1 - Oct 17" according to its listing information, while Groveland Oaks runs from "the last week of April through first week of October."

Water supply: Water access varies significantly between sites. At Holly State Recreation Area, "There is no water hookup- but you can fill up and dump at the front of the campground," advises Ashley F. Some campgrounds offer full hookups while others provide communal water sources.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Groveland Oaks County Park offers extensive recreation for children. "This campground has a lake for swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing. Lots for kids to do... also skate park and 2 playgrounds," shares Debbie H. Facilities like these make it ideal for families seeking structured activities.

Weekend activities: Many parks organize special events for children, particularly during summer and holiday weekends. "They have kids activities on the weekends, a lake for swimming, great playgrounds and everything is really clean," mentions Wendy K. about Addison Oaks County Park.

Pet-friendly trails: For families camping with dogs, the region offers numerous pet-friendly hiking options. "This is a giant recreation area that features a campground, 3 lakes, tons of trails, and even a splash zone for kids," notes Kate K. about Holly State Recreation Area, making it suitable for pet-friendly camping near Lake Orion.

    Tips from RVers

Site sizing: RV campers should research site dimensions before booking. At Camp Agawam, the compact size makes it better for smaller rigs. James P. describes it as "a great little park in the middle of suburbia" with tent sites rather than developed RV spots.

Electrical connections: Several campgrounds advise bringing extension cords due to outlet placement. "If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad," warns Mary H. about Pontiac Lake Recreation Area.

Leveling considerations: Many sites require significant leveling for larger RVs. At Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area, Daniel notes, "Camp site was nice with blacktop pad and once parked felt very secluded." RVers with larger rigs should check site specifications or call ahead to ensure adequate space and levelness.
