      Newaygo State Park Campground

      Good summer weekend destination

If you have any watercraft, this is a good weekender spot. The hike trails are easily traversed and if you ask the camp ranger at reception, you can also rent single or tandem kayaks for *quite a reasonable price in varying time blocks if you don't have any watercraft of your own - you just tell them what time that you want to start and they will bring the kayak to the boat launch for you, which is great. Trash dumpsters and firewood are available at the campground entrance (if wood for some reason is unavailable, there's a BP gas station nearby that also sells it for $1 cheaper a bundle). The designated swimming area for the site is not the best unless you have small children, but if you like towed tubing, there's plenty of that happening mid-lake, outside of the other pontoons and boats. Also, despite the features listed here, there are no shower facilities available at this site, so bring bath wipes if you want to stay fresh! The water pump was also inoperable during my stay, but came prepared with plenty of bottled water anyway. The campfire pits also do not have grates for grilling/cooking any hot food, but if you have any cast iron cookware, you can get around this by placing your fire pit logs as evenly as possible so you can set your cookware direct on the flame (or just bring a mini grill if you prefer). Also close enough to Grand Haven so you can spend a few hours there as part of a mini get-away and still get to your site within about an hour or so.

      Grand Haven State Park Campground

Beach camping in a wonderful town.

Grand Haven is a tourist destination. Known for its beautiful beaches, great restaurant’s, and small town shops. The State Park is not at all roughing it but makes up for that in views of sunset and beach front camp sites. Bring your own fire pit if you need a fire. Clean bathroom’s. Walking distance to all the downtown action. Prices can be a bit high during peak summer dates.

      Muskegon KOA

      Love this KOA!

Sadly, we just left the KOA Muskegon campground this morning after a relaxing and peaceful three-day stay. While travelling home, plans are already being made for another camping vacay at this KOA. The staff were all friendly and helpful, creating a family-like atmosphere. The cabins were clean, updated, and the beds were quite comfortable. Our deluxe cabin bathroom and kitchenette were also stocked with amenities, making the stay comfortable and effortless. Outside our temporary home was our own gas grill, patio table with seating, fire ring, and Adirondack chairs. How nice it was for meals on the deck and campfires in the evenings! Every morning we looked forward to the 3/4 mile hiking trail around the lake... which was gorgeous. Although, we personally don't fish, we enjoyed watching other guests fishing from the shore and various docks regularly. There is also a fun area of the campground that includes playground equipment, basketball, volleyball, a jumping pad that looks like a blast, and they were setting up some interesting looking mining activity. We did spend time on their community patio overlooking a fabulous greenspace, fire pit, swim beach, and the lake. I could've spent all day on the patio with the relaxing patio lights, flowering planters, and comfortable Adirondack chairs. The camp store is again clean, updated, and well-stocked, but I was also impressed that the prices were reasonable, which is not always the case in these type of"convenience" situations. Overall, cherished camping memories were made this past weekend, and we are anxious to return in the near future for more! Thank you KOA Muskegon staff!

      Grand Haven State Park Campground

      Did a walk through

We were camping at Holland State Park, which isn't that far away & decided to take a morning to see the pier & lighthouses at Grand Haven. Unfortunately, we picked the Saturday they were having the Kite Fest on the beach so the parking was CRAZY!

I asked the guy at the gate how to get to the pier & he said "cut through the campground". I'm pretty sure there's a city park outside the state park, but like I said- crazy weekend parking.

My thoughts on Grand Haven State Park is the sites are VERY tight. I thought Holland was bad, but Grand Haven is much worse.

The pro- You can get a site right on the beach. Imagine sitting & watching the sunset every night from the comfort of your site! You get a nice view of the lighthouses.

The cons- Very Tight Sites! This is also a very small state park, so it's parking lot/beach/campground & that's about it. There's only 1 bathhouse. You have to bring your own portable fire pit. No hiking trail, unless you count the walk to the pier.

      Grand Haven State Park Campground

      Beautiful beach, but crowded.

Grand Haven State Park is great for families, and those who want a camping experience minus the seclusion of being in the woods. The camping area is a large parking be lot where most camp in trailers and RVs. The beach and pier is within short walking distance and amenities are well kept for. Plenty of great restaurants and breweries in downtown Grand Haven, again, only walking distance away. All in all, Grand Haven State Park is the place to go when your main camping goal is getting rid of those tan lines.

      Bucket-list checked!

This was a great overall experience. We were right on the canal side and only 300ft away from Lake Michigan. Grand Haven State Parks has upgraded facilities so bathrooms and showering is actually pleasant. Loce this place and will be going back annually.

      Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

      Muskegon County Pioneer County Park

      Beautiful and relaxing

This campground is our home away from home in the summer! It is beautiful & very relaxing especially during the weekdays when it's not as full. The bathrooms are clean & the rangers keep up with mowing & other chores to keep the grounds clean. When it gets crowded the wifi doesn't work great & some of the campers are not very respectful; they cut through lots & don't abide by the rules (no pets on beach & no bikes or skateboards on boardwalk). The rangers get after them when they see it. Gets frustrating because it ruins it for others who care about the park. The only other downfall is there isn't much beach because of the high water table. I wish they could dredge & bring in more sand. Otherwise it's our favorite place to be!

It is very busy and mostly full of RV's and trailers," reports Kristen B., who adds that the park "sits less than a mile from the main strip of Grand Haven, which is a very cute town with great restaurants, shops and candy stores."

Riverside tubing: Chinook Camping provides tubing opportunities that end right at the campground. "This is a great campground for tubing down the river. They rent the tubes right at the campground, take you up river, and then you get out of the river back at the campground," explains Clint, who also mentions they have "a pool, arcade, food window, Restaurant, and a convenience store right across the street."

Winter recreation: Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park remains open year-round and offers winter activities. "Across the road is the Winter complex, sledding, skating, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and luge course. Our kids had a blast here, they have tons of bonfire pits as well," writes Melissa M. The park also offers summer water activities with "stairs over the hill or you can walk down to the main beach entrance."

Clean facilities: White River RV Park & Campground receives consistent praise for cleanliness. "This campground is the CLEANEST one I have EVER seen. We went into what appears to be pit toilets, but they were flush toilets with TILE floors! They have Multiple 'dog poo' bag stations with bags and disposal sites," shares Shelly B., who adds that the "bath houses were the best I have ever seen!"

Sunset views: South Channel Campground provides views of the channel from Muskegon Lake to Lake Michigan. "Can watch boats go through channel from campsite, loved watching the lake express," says Sara G. Another camper, Ruben S., noted: "My wife and I took the car out with a tent and some fishing poles. Caught some fish and enjoyed a few trails."

    What you should know

Reservation timing: Popular glamping sites near Grand Haven, Michigan fill quickly, especially in summer. "This campground is EXTREMELY hard to get into on the weekends. Tips from RVers

Leveling and access: Site conditions vary across glamping locations around Grand Haven. "Sites are level and shaded by mature trees. Road is a bit narrow which made backing out travel trailer in a bit tricky, not impossible," notes Kyle K. about Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park.

Sanitary facilities: RV dump stations are available at most parks. "The campground is well kept and the facilities are nice. This is a busy town so be patient and enjoy the town," advises Stephanie C. about Grand Haven State Park, where despite the tight quarters, the amenities make up for limited space.
