Best Tent Camping near Grand Haven, MI

Tent camping options near Grand Haven, Michigan range from established campgrounds to more secluded sites along the nearby lakes and waterways. The Allendale-West Grand Rapids KOA provides spacious tent sites in a wooded setting with amenities like picnic tables, fire rings, and access to clean bathroom facilities. South Channel Campground in Muskegon State Park offers tent campers proximity to both Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake with walking paths to beach access points.

Most tent sites in the region feature flat, grassy or dirt surfaces with varying amounts of tree cover for shade. Walk-in tent locations are available at several campgrounds, including South Channel and Allendale KOA, providing more seclusion than standard drive-in sites. Fire rings and picnic tables are standard at established campgrounds, while more primitive tent setups may require campers to bring their own water and sanitation supplies. Seasonal access varies, with South Channel Campground operating from April to late October, while other locations like the KOA remain open year-round for tent campers seeking off-season solitude.

The region offers diverse experiences for tent campers based on their preference for amenities versus seclusion. Areas along the White River provide more backcountry tent camping experiences with minimal facilities but greater privacy. A review on The Dyrt noted that South Channel Campground provides "a path to the channel with a short walk to Lake Michigan beach" making it convenient for tent campers seeking water access. The wooded tent sites at Allendale KOA offer better shade and wind protection than many lakeside locations, with one camper describing the sites as "woody but doesn't feel too buggy." Many tent campers appreciate the balance of natural settings with access to hiking trails, beaches, and dunes that characterize the western Michigan landscape near Grand Haven.

    Allendale-West Grand Rapids KOA

    Great sites

This campground is great, it's only 25 minutes from Grand Haven beach. The sites are well treed and flat! Lots of the activities within the park, they have a small petting zoo, sky pad, playground. Several cottages in the park as well. Well be back.

    Campers Paradise

    Conveniently located, no-frills campground

Don’t discount this campground, we found it did not live up to the angsty hype of the sour reviewers on google and Campendium. We had a very enjoyable and safe stay at Camper’s Paradise in Grand Haven.

Yes, the staff are very strict on the 5 MPH speed limit. But if you respect this rule, you’ll have a perfectly fine stay. Those who have kids or pets will probably find they like the enforced speed limit so their kids can play about without imminent danger.

And yes, the campground is not a quiet, silent getaway. A quick look at a map can tell you it is close to a highway. However, the road noise is not obnoxious and quickly drowns out as background noise. Anyone in a trailer won’t notice it. It’s mostly primitive campers and light sleepers who may need ear plugs. The advantage to its urban location is its proximity to Grand Haven Beach and Rosy Mound, both bike riding distance.

Bathhouses, though old, have been recently re-tiled and are cleaned daily.

RV spots are dirt, and nicely shaded. A fire ring and picnic table are provided at each spot.

Don’t get scared from the bad reviews. This campground was a welcome rescue when our other reservation fell through. Yes, it’s an urban campground and yes, the staff are vigilant about their rules. But none of this prevents having a good time enjoying the outdoors in Grand Haven.

    Brower Park Campground

    Large Family Fun Campground

There is something for everyone here. Tent, camper, or RV and fun for all ages with everything from 3 playgrounds, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and tennis courts, to a boat launch, fishing pier, and fish cleaning station. There is also a fairly large swimming area. The showers are actually nice and clean! The restrooms were surprisingly clean and modern as well. Firewood is available in bundles or loose and you stack it yourself. There are numerous picnic areas throughout the campground. There are picnic tables and fire rings at every site and hook up such as electric and water vary. Kids are riding their bikes all over, fishing, playing at playgrounds, the beach, everywhere. Everyone was very friendly. You probably don’t necessarily need a sleeping pad or air mat if you’re in a tent, but they’re always nice. The mosquitos weren’t bad at all! We stayed at site #226. You do need a county park pass, $6/day until 10pm or $25/year.

    Ely Lake Campground

    Keyword: RUSTIC

This is our "home base" campground. It's familiar. We've been coming here for decades. Comfortable, and quiet(for the most part).

Caveat: no electric, no running water, no sewer/septic, no dump, no fill... Can run your generator(inverter type is best). Solar is a negative due to tree cover.

Vault toilets only, and pitcher pumps for water. There is a dumpster available in the busier parts of the season but this campground is open year round.

No playground. Just the beach and the trails.

Sites range from small tent sites to fairly large, but the "roads" inside the campground are tight so think twice before bringing the longer 5th wheels.

In short, if you want a quiet getaway from your usual then this is a great place to go. If you're expecting a pool, arcade, and dining hall... Look elsewhere.

    Newaygo State Park Campground

    Good summer weekend destination

If you have any watercraft, this is a good weekender spot. The hike trails are easily traversed and if you ask the camp ranger at reception, you can also rent single or tandem kayaks for *quite a reasonable price in varying time blocks if you don't have any watercraft of your own - you just tell them what time that you want to start and they will bring the kayak to the boat launch for you, which is great. Trash dumpsters and firewood are available at the campground entrance (if wood for some reason is unavailable, there's a BP gas station nearby that also sells it for $1 cheaper a bundle). The designated swimming area for the site is not the best unless you have small children, but if you like towed tubing, there's plenty of that happening mid-lake, outside of the other pontoons and boats. Also, despite the features listed here, there are no shower facilities available at this site, so bring bath wipes if you want to stay fresh! The water pump was also inoperable during my stay, but came prepared with plenty of bottled water anyway. The campfire pits also do not have grates for grilling/cooking any hot food, but if you have any cast iron cookware, you can get around this by placing your fire pit logs as evenly as possible so you can set your cookware direct on the flame (or just bring a mini grill if you prefer). Also close enough to Grand Haven so you can spend a few hours there as part of a mini get-away and still get to your site within about an hour or so.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort-South Haven, MI

This is my top pick for South Haven

Although this campground has great amenities, a pool, clean showers, and good sites/cabins, it is hard to book. If you know you are going to come to this area and camp, you need to book it a while in advance. I have used a pop-up and there was good space between campers. When I tent camped, we had a great spot near the cafe, the showers are amazing over there, they are more secluded. Our tent spot had electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. We camped on the grass and there is gravel to park your car. This campground is a perfect place to stay when visiting surrounding towns and going to the beach.

Don’t forget to go to Sherman’s!!

There was a forecast or rain, don’t mind the tarp

    Brookside City Park

Beautiful super small camping in town

The campsites are located past the playground and shelter. Just keep driving down the road that looks like an alley. There is a wonderful place set up for just a few campers.

A couple sites are for tents only and the others are standard sites. There are a few trees by the sites but it’s mostly open area. Portable toilets are at the end of the camping area and in the playground area. The playground is a day use area for town so expect to meet some locals.

Driving just down the street takes you to the police station. This is where you register for the site. Town is around you and ready to explore. There are a few train tracks and industrial businesses which provide a bit of noise along with traffic. For us, the noise just slid right into the background.

This is a great place for a low price.

    Hoffmaster State Park Campground

    Woods & Water Wonderland!

Great family campground - Paired with the area offers many options!

With mostly modern sites situated in hardwoods, pines, or a mixture, we stayed in the hardwoods area; however, my kids would have enjoyed the pines better for it appeared to have hammock hanging at almost every site. Well-maintained and clean restrooms had soda vending machines.

Children's play area with equipment and activity field, where several kites were hoisted high into the air, were great. Gillette Visitor Center in the State Park area about 1/4 mile away offers Explorer and interpretive programs Tuesday through Saturday, with topics ranging from nature history/preservation to information on wildlife. We enjoyed the spider and bear presentations most, but maybe that is because I have all boys! The campground beach, only a 5 - 10 minute walk from any site, was awesome! While there wasn't a lifeguard, I appreciated the "flag system" advising how safe the water is each day. Unfortunately, a red flag was flying on our visit, so we only waded at the water's edge- but - still cool to lay out on the sugar-like sand and walk its 3 mile length! I do regret not making it back to the beach for sunset as our camping neighbors RAVED about it the following morning!

My favorite part of this campground was the trails. In addition to several trails within the campground (the one along the creek was especially loved!), many more can be accessed in the state park, which contains over ten miles of trails in its 1,200 acres. Trails to dunes, beach, and other parks as well as dune preserve: all well-marked and vary in difficulty, weaving through pine and hardwood forests nestled among dunes. Plus, the adjoining North Ottawa Dune Preserve offers an additional ten miles of trails! OMG - what a phenomenal place for a walk in the woods or trail running! One of our walks was up a 5-story staircase near the nature center, leading to an observation platform with expansive views of majestic dunes and Lake Michigan. I was impressed that a portion was barrier-free.

Some family ventured into nearby towns of Muskegon, Spring Lake, and Grand Haven to experience what they had to offer: shops, museums, World War II boats, piers to walk, and several craft breweries - all 15 minutes away! Our dogs enjoyed the visit to the unleashed dog park at Coast Guard Park that is a ten-minute drive or a five-mile walk through the trails.

Logistics to note: Campground sells ice - $2/7# bag and wood/$5.50 a bundle. We quickly realized that residences outside the park sold it at $5 for larger bundles. Area grocery stores include a Meijer superstore and Leppinks grocery. We preferred Leppinks for the quick trip and Meijer for items beyond groceries, such as that forgotten bathing suit or a propane tank for the grill. While we don't have a big rig, I did notice the backup of campers at the two campground dump stations Sunday before 1pm checkout. Being a state park, Hoffmaster requires vehicles have a recreation passport to enter ($11/year -residents and $32/year -non-residents or a daily rate of $9). No alcoholic beverages between April 15 and Labor Day.

I talked to a ranger about coming back later this year, and he told me it is best to book months ahead for weekends because they fill up at the beginning of summer; however, cancellations are not uncommon, so watch the DNR site for openings. Weekdays usually have availability, especially the first half of the summer. He added that a great time to visit would be the weekend before Halloween as they encourage people to decorate their sites, wear costumes, and participate in trick or treating on Saturday night.

    Grand Haven State Park Campground

Great parking lot camping with a view!

This campground is EXTREMELY hard to get into on the weekends. If you are planning a trip to Grand Haven State Park, be sure to log onto the State Reservation site six months to the date that you want to camp. This campground is unique because it is basically a parking lot with site numbers. There are no fire rings and plenty of sand! Be prepared to have lots of sand and dirt in and around your RV! The catwalk on the lighthouse pier is being updated so if you plan on a 2017 trip, you will not be able to go onto the pier to look at the lighthouse up close. I will post pictures from last summer when we camped there so you can see the lighthouse with the catwalk. My son likes to jump off the pier. The pier is usually packed with older kids listening to music and jumping from the pier. This is a hot spot for the locals as well as tourist. Grand Haven is one of my favorite towns and my husband and I have considered moving there in the future. The campground is well kept and the facilities are nice. This is a busy town so be patient and enjoy the town. If you can go during coast guard festival, I recommend it! Also, walk down the boardwalk and visit Barefoot Dave at the Tshirt shop! He is so personable and has awesome tshirts! There is also a place called Pronto Pup and it is basically a deep fried hot dog.. YUMMY!

Guide to Grand Haven

Tent campsites near Grand Haven, Michigan range from primitive dispersed sites along the White River to full-service family campgrounds with private beaches. The region's sandy soil drains quickly, making most sites remain usable even after light rain. Summer nights typically cool to around 60°F, while daytime temperatures average 75-85°F during peak camping season from June through August.

What to do

Water activities on Muskegon Lake: South Channel Campground provides direct access to both Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan. As one camper noted, "Just a walk from the beach. Miles of trails through the dunes and woods. A few lookout points scattered throughout" with sites offering "scattered trees and a decent amount of shade."

Goat viewing and animal encounters: Allendale-West Grand Rapids KOA features a small petting zoo with goats that campers frequently mention. "My nephew loves the goats more than anything!" reports one reviewer, while another notes the campground has "Goats to visit, air-soft shooting range, large play structure, clean bathrooms, well kept and lengthy sites!"

Riverfront camping and paddling: WaterTrail Ventures Paddle Respite offers paddling access with riverfront sites. A camper shared, "We kayaked there from Allegan and was treated to more wildlife viewing opportunities than we could ask for." Another mentioned it has a "private beach. Great swimming, in a very private area. It also has great trails for walking."

What campers like

Private waterfront sites: Campers appreciate the secluded spots at WaterTrail Ventures, where one reviewer described it as "Private, clean, and relaxing... beautiful with solar lights at night and a private beach." The campground also provides "air mattresses made up with sheets and blankets, all the firewood provided, a grill full of charcoal."

Family-friendly activities: Woods and Water RV Resort receives praise for its recreational options. "Wonderful little swim area with water slide. Wonderful trails for hiking. Lots of activities," reports one camper. Others appreciate that "sites are spacious. Easy to back into. Very quite!"

Primitive camping along the White River: For those seeking more rustic experiences, White River Campsite #1 provides dispersed camping options. "There are dispersed options as well as docked site. It's in a forest, so bring a compass if you plan to do some hiking," advises one camper. Another explains, "This is the White River special area of the Manistee National Forest. While there are numbered campsites, there are no facilities or amenities."

What you should know

Reservation timing matters: South Channel Campground fills quickly during summer months. Multiple campers advise to "Reserve early" as the campground gets very busy.

Early check-in fees at some campgrounds: At Allendale KOA, one camper cautions, "Make sure you do not arrive before 2:00PM, as they require a $10 early registration fee. If you decide not to pay, you'll be directed to overflow parking where you can loiter until 2:00."

Campground size and layout considerations: East Lake Camping has limited waterfront sites available for non-seasonal campers. A recent visitor noted, "Most people here are seasonal, occupying almost all the lakefront sites. We may have seen one lakefront available for renters." The same camper observed "The sites are very small, not much privacy, but well kept."

Tips for camping with families

Prioritize campgrounds with activities: Allendale KOA has numerous family-oriented features. "The pool was clean and we had a lot on the pond. All of those sites were good size for small trailer," one family noted. Another shared, "We found this campground last minute... We have two girls of the age of five so the pool, the hayride, the night hayride, two parks, jump pad, and feeding the goats kept them busy."

Beach access options: For families wanting lake swimming, several campgrounds offer alternatives to crowded public beaches. A camper at Oak Knoll Family Campground reported, "Small playground, a beach for swimming is close but not on the campground," while still rating it as "an awesome camping experience with our four kids."

Pet-friendly amenities: Allendale KOA accommodates family pets with dedicated spaces. According to one reviewer, "Pets are welcome here with two fenced dog runs and trails to keep the owners exercised."

Tips from RVers

Site spacing and shade: When selecting RV sites near Grand Haven, shade coverage varies significantly. At South Channel Campground, one RVer warned that sites are "VERY close together. It was actually the first thing we noticed as soon as we pulled through the gate," but noted "Restroom & shower facilities were relatively clean & well maintained."

Hookup options: Woods and Water RV Resort provides full-service sites with positive reviews for ease of access. A camper reported the "sites are spacious. Easy to back into," making it suitable for larger rigs.

Check campground rules carefully: Some campgrounds have strict policies. At Sandy Pines RV Resort, a reviewer cautions "There are SO many rules, however these rules are not consistently enforced leaving you often confused," and noted the campground handbook is "79 pages long."
