Waterloo Portage Lake Modern — Waterloo Recreation Area

Had a good time, a little crowded

We stayed for the weekend tent camping, getting to the site was a little crowded (alot of kids on bikes) our site was pavement but had some space to set the tent on the grass. I seen alot of sites with trees for shade. The vista walkway was across from us, it led right to the beach concessions. The beach walkway is handicap accessible. The fishing pier is new, has two benches and tables for your stuff. It is a bit of a walk to get to but is handicap accessible.
There are two bathrooms throughout the loop and one at the beach. The park workers walk around and tell you about the activities they have that day. We enjoyed our stay there is alot to do

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Nice place close to i90

A lake to cool off in that’s not too far from the south loop sites. Modern toilets and showers. Open space camping on grass with strip of woods between sites and lake. Road on the other side that could use more trees and shrubs to block view and some noise. We prefer more woods like camping and more trails by the campsites so only four stars.

Green Lake Rustic Campground — Waterloo Recreation Area

    Booking was horrible

So when I booked this camp site, I was originally looking at the Rustic camping on the app The Dyrt. The app brought me to the state park site, campsites looked beautiful and absolutely gorgeous for the rustic, it’s showed a picture of the bath house etc. Booked the site for the weekend because I’m catching up with a friend after awhile. Upon arrival, it leads us to this absolutely packed campground with sites directly ontop of each other, kids in the road the entire way through, parents not paying attention, absolute nightmare. It was in fact, it was the RV park. Not what I booked. We ended up talking to the office attendant, and booked at Green Lake Campground for the weekend, having to switch between 2 campsites over the weekend due to bookings. Overall just a very frustrating thing to deal with trying to get away for the weekend. Not the attendants fault, partially my fault, but also the state website as it is VERY unclear of the difference in camp grounds. Recommend the Rustic, stay away from the RV campsite that looked like an absolute hell scape if I’ve ever seen on.

Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern — Waterloo Recreation Area

    Excellent

We have been to this campground twice now. The property is very well maintained with a nice park and clean bathrooms. The campground has some nice full-grown trees, but isn't extremely wooded. It does not feel like you're up north, but I'm giving 5 stars because of how well it is maintained. The trees offer shade, but are spaced out enough that a group can pull their campers around for privacy

Guide to Clarklake

Several campsites near Clarklake, Michigan offer overnight accommodations within a 30-minute drive radius. The area features a mix of state-operated recreation lands and private facilities amid the rolling terrain of southern Michigan's Irish Hills region. Summer temperatures typically range from 60-85°F with higher humidity, while spring and fall offer milder camping conditions with occasional rain.

What to do

Fishing access: Green Lake Rustic Campground has a small boat dock where visitors can launch kayaks and fishing boats. "There is muddy lake access on that site and I paddled from there in my kayak. There is an official boat launch nearby," notes a camper at Green Lake Rustic Campground.

Dark sky viewing: Lake Hudson Recreation Area has been designated as a dark sky preserve, making it ideal for stargazing. "The best part of this campground is the stars at night! This is a dark sky preserve campground and the stars are the show. We stayed here at the end of the perseid meteor showers and saw several falling meteors," according to a visitor at Lake Hudson Recreation Area.

Local attractions: The Irish Hills area surrounding Clarklake offers several points of interest. "Needed a quick weekend getaway, and found this place. Very nice, lots to do in surrounding area. Lake is pretty. Nearby MIS. Hidden Lake Gardens are absolutely beautiful to wander around," explains a camper at W.J. Hayes State Park.

What campers like

Large, private sites: Many campers appreciate the generous spacing at Lake Hudson. "My site is HUGE. It is private! My site has a path right out to the lake," reports a camper. Another adds, "Each site is separated from the next by young forest, so it lends to a very private and secluded atmosphere."

Family programming: Apple Creek Campground & RV Park provides organized activities for children. "Great owners that care about the camping experience and provide activities on the weekend for the kids. Pretty spacious sites," says one reviewer. Another mentions, "The campground offered a haunted trail, trick or treating and crafts for the kids."

Swimming areas: Multiple campgrounds offer water recreation. A guest at Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern notes, "There is a decent sandy beach here with a playground and volleyball net. Also in the park are some small dirt trails for hiking and biking."

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds fill quickly, especially waterfront sites. At Green Lake, a camper advises, "I would recommend getting a reservation before showing up. They have laminated signs posted on the campsites to let you know which ones are taken. When I showed up I found site 13 open for only one night."

Amenity variations: Facilities differ significantly between campgrounds. A visitor at Waterloo Portage Lake Modern explains, "There are two bathrooms throughout the loop and one at the beach. The park workers walk around and tell you about the activities they have that day."

Water quality: Lakes in the area vary in swimming quality. One camper notes about Green Lake, "The lake is not good for swimming as it is very mucky and covered in Lilly pads." Similarly, a visitor to Portage Lake comments, "The beach area is very mucky and dirty. Seaweed just flats around and gets tangled around your legs and arms all the time."

Tips for camping with families

Site selection: For families seeking space, Ted Ranch offers larger sites. "Really friendly staff!! Nice campsites! Love the lake and the people were great as well!!! Lots of open space as well, doesn't feel crowded!!" shares a visitor at Ted Ranch Campground.

Kid-friendly amenities: Some campgrounds have dedicated recreational facilities. "There is a pool and a volleyball area as well as a playground. There is also nice walking/hiking trails connected right to the property," notes a camper at Apple Creek Campground.

Beach access: Several campgrounds feature swimming areas specifically designed for families. A W.J. Hayes visitor recommends, "Take the kids there and they love it. Nice little fishing pier and access to Round lake and Wamplers lake. Decent beach and park."

Tips from RVers

Electrical hookups: Not all sites offer the same level of service. A camper at Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern points out, "There is electrical on each site and is mostly a place for campers and RVs. There are fire pits and picnic tables at each site. It is usually easy to get multiple sites next to each other with reservations."

Seasonal camping: Holiday RV Campground offers extended-stay options. "This campground is family owned and very nicely kept up. It is predominantly all season campers but there are plenty of other spots open for short visits. They have expanded sites recently, newer areas have no trees. Older sites have plenty of shade," explains a visitor.

Site dimensions: Larger rigs require specific planning. "If your longer than 40ft be aware most sites will not work for you here, they do have some but the wood line, privacy and nature is great," advises a camper at W. J. Hayes State Park Campground.
