Bathrooms were dated and we arrived Monday after Labor Day so I can't judge them. They had a FULL HOUSE on Labor Day per the front gate. I was very impressed there was no garbage at campsites and picked up very well.

GREAT biking trails you can catch on premise and bike over to Kensington and to the charming town of Milford

Sugarloaf Campground — Waterloo Recreation Area

      A Wonderful Winter Getaway

We stayed in the Southfork Rustic Cabin at the end of Feb and it was lovely much needed get away. The cabin was semi modern (solar lighting) but only a wood stove for heat. Small kitchen unit with table for eating. You had to hike in about a quarter mile to get there, and it sleeps four people with two bunk beds. There is an outside vault toilet behind the cabin. Lots of trails connecting the cabin to the rest of the park. Cheap too! Only $68 per night.

      Harrison Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

      Lake Hudson Recreation Area

Beautiful Nature, Dark Sky Rustic Camping

Lake Hudson is a dark sky preserve full of trees, nature and a beautiful lake. The camping sites come with an electric plug in, a nice fire ring and a picnic table. They are cute sites. Most are not by the lake. There is a dumpster. The facilities are rustic. The facilities are port a potty type with wooden walls and cement floor. No showers. A hand pump well for water. The swimming part of the lake requires a drive. The Lake is beautiful with a sand beach, no wake boating and grills. However it is rustic so there is goose poo. The woods are beautiful. There is hunting. We had heard that some people partied there but the night we were there it was quiet and people were respectful. We had a beautiful fire and dutch oven dinner. We saw one cute racoon who ran away when I reacted. We were worried about mosquitos but we only saw one.

      Harrison Lake State Park Campground

      Nice park for Northwest Ohio

We rented a yurt as a local weekend escape. Our kids loved the yurt. It was nice with a little mini fridge and 4 double beds. Campground showers and bathrooms are clean. It is one of the only state parks in northwest Ohio, a beautiful little spot nestled in farmland of Ohio. The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well. We did not use it, but there is a dog beach as well. Sites are crowed and close together.

      W. J. Hayes State Park Campground

Great state park in the Irish Hills

Hayes State Park is a great little spot in the Irish Hills. It rained the whole time we were there (boo!) but we tried to make the best of it. Our site was the perfect spot for two tents and a hammock, and I loved the fire pit and table being next to the driveway. There’s electric at every site, and a paved driveway for RVs. One thing is that the sites in the east loop, while a little more spaced out than the west loop, are still real close together. If there had been someone in the spot to our left, it would’ve felt really cramped. The ranger office was nice, clean, and had lots of information ready! Firewood and ice are available there as well for reasonable prices. The bathroom building was right in the center of our loop, and had warm showers that were great after a day of cold mist. They aren’t the cleanest, but with how many people were there it was well kept and stocked. This is obviously a campground geared towards families, with tons to do from the beach, to volleyball courts and horseshoes. The main attraction is of course Wamplers Lake, and you can rent kayaks, pedal boats and canoes to go explore around the lake. Overall, this is a great campsite if you are a family, or attending an event at MIS right down the road. If you enjoy more secluded campsites, this isn’t the spot for you.

    Guide to Clarklake

Cabins near Clarklake, Michigan range from rustic accommodations to more developed lodging options within state recreation areas. The region sits at approximately 1,000 feet elevation in Michigan's Irish Hills area, characterized by numerous small lakes formed by glacial activity. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing, while summer months typically see highs in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, making proper seasonal preparation essential.

    What to do

Water activities on multiple lakes: W.J. Hayes State Park Campground offers access to Wamplers Lake with boat docks and swimming areas. One visitor noted, "The lake is pretty. Nearby MIS. Hidden Lake Gardens are absolutely beautiful to wander around."

Hiking trail exploration: Pinckney Recreation Area provides extensive trail networks connecting to the 35-mile Waterloo-Pinckney Trail. A reviewer mentioned, "There are multiple camping opportunities with a variety of camping styles. Yurt rental, to hike-in rustic sites, there's good camping for anyone. A 35 mile hiking trail runs through the entire area with small day trails branching off to points of interest."

Dark sky stargazing: Lake Hudson Recreation Area maintains a dark sky preserve designation for optimal celestial viewing. "The best part of this campground is the stars at night! This is a dark sky preserve campground and the stars are the show. We stayed here at the end of the perseid meteor showers and saw several of falling meteors," reports one visitor.

    What campers like

Private, wooded sites: Lake Hudson Recreation Area features secluded camping spots separated by trees. According to a camper, "This small campground (about 40 sites) is well off the beaten path, but still easy to access by road. Each site is separated from the next by young forest, so it lends to a very private and secluded atmosphere."

Family-friendly amenities: Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern campground offers recreational facilities for children. A visitor explained, "Spent 4 nights and 5 days camping with my husband and 2 kids. We had fun and the kids had a blast. They rode bikes around the loop and loved swimming and the playground."

Peaceful lake access: Waterloo Portage Lake Modern provides direct water access with fishing opportunities. "Nice campground with lots of sites, after the weekend we had half the place to our selfs, nice big clean lake that also offers row boat rental," writes one reviewer.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin accommodations require advance planning, especially for weekend stays. The most desirable lakefront sites book quickly. "It's a drive but well worth no shower rustic Campground only," notes a Lake Hudson visitor.

Facility variations: Bruin Lake Campground offers modern amenities but with some limitations. A camper reported, "Nice little campground. Bathroom facilities could use some updating. Rangers are great. Nice lake to kayak in."

Seasonal considerations: Water availability varies by location, with some rustic cabins requiring visitors to use hand pumps. "Our camper is self contained so this campground was a test of just how well all the systems work... There was only 1 hand pump that I saw for all the campers to get water from," shared a Lake Hudson visitor.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach access planning: Arrange cabin stays within walking distance of swimming areas for easier family outings. A visitor to Waterloo Recreation Area stated, "The beach walkway is handicap accessible. The fishing pier is new, has two benches and tables for your stuff. It is a bit of a walk to get to but is handicap accessible."

Activity scheduling: Apple Creek Campground & RV Park organizes regular weekend programs for children. "Great owners that care about the camping experience and provide activities on the weekend for the kids. Pretty spacious sites," reports a happy camper.

Site selection strategy: Choose cabins near playgrounds but away from main roads for safety. "The property is very well maintained with a nice park and clean bathrooms. The campground has some nice full-grown trees, but isn't extremely wooded. The trees offer shade, but are spaced out enough that a group can pull their campers around for privacy," explains a Waterloo Sugarloaf visitor.

    Tips from RVers

Extended hookup cords: Electrical connections at some cabins require longer cords. At Lake Hudson, a visitor found that "extension or long electrical cords may be needed, as boxes are at back end and halfway to next site over."

Winter camping preparation: Holiday RV Campground offers year-round access with paved sites. "The best part of this campsite was the fact that it was paved! It was so easy setting up and tearing down. No mud, muck, or dirt. There were fire pits, picnic tables, and electric," notes a winter camper.

Site spacing awareness: Most cabin and RV sites have limited privacy between units. "We purchased our new rPod 193 late in the fall and have been dying to give it a test camp... It was quiet, due in large part to being nearly vacant this time of year. We did have one neighbor for one of our 4 nights and were surprised at how close the spots were."
