    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Green Lake Rustic Campground features 15 pet-friendly campsites within the 20,000-acre Waterloo State Recreation Area, approximately 6 miles north of Chelsea. Dogs must be kept on leashes no longer than 6 feet at all times throughout the campground and recreation area. The spacious sites accommodate both tents and small RVs, with most offering enough room for proper pet exercise and setup. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table, with vault toilets and potable water from a hand pump available onsite. While Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern Campground also welcomes pets, Green Lake's more rustic atmosphere typically attracts fewer crowds. Sites are generally first-come, first-served, though the DNR website now accepts reservations due to increased popularity among mountain bikers and hikers.

The nearby Border-to-Border and DTE mountain bike trails provide excellent dog walking opportunities, with numerous trail access points directly from the Green Lake campground. Pets can enjoy limited water access at Green Lake, though the shoreline is somewhat mucky and covered in lily pads, making swimming challenging. For better water access, Sugarloaf Lake offers a sandy beach area where leashed dogs are permitted at designated times. Chelsea's proximity allows campers to quickly access veterinary services and pet supplies when needed. Sites along Green Lake provide lake views but experience some highway noise from M-52 across the water, while inland sites border wetlands with higher mosquito activity. The campground maintains relatively quiet atmosphere despite its popularity among hikers, mountain bikers, and paddlers.

      Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

      Private camping

Very private sites. I was surprised at how well each site was hidden from the others. Restrooms can be a bit far from some sites. Nice little dog park by the beach too.

      Clear Water Campgrounds

      Love, love, love this campground.

This is a quiet, friendly and family campground. The staff is very willing to help any way they can. The sites are level and spacious.

A great place for the kids! With a beach, playground and paved roads is nice but the frosting in this cake is the petting zoo. Animals from bunnies, peacocks & cats to horses, goats and of course Milton the burro, get it? Milton Burro, LOL

The store has stuff for the kids at very reasonable prices and the ice cream shop across the street is a nice walk after dinner. There's a light there for safe crossing, too.

Try this place, you'll add this to your good memories.

      Harrison Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

Owners are very friendly. Direct connections to the Waterloo Pinckney trail system. Near Hell, Michigan and Chelsea, Michigan. Large pool in season. Priced reasonably.

    Guide to Chelsea

Camping options near Chelsea, Michigan encompass nearly 20,000 acres of public land with several inland lakes and extensive trail systems. Located in the southeastern portion of Michigan about 15 miles west of Ann Arbor, the area features a mix of hardwood forest, wetlands and glacial terrain with elevations ranging from 850-1,000 feet. Winter camping is available at several locations, though most visitors come between May and October when temperatures average 70-85°F during summer days.

    What to do

Mountain biking on DTE trails: The extensive trail system offers routes for various skill levels accessible from multiple campgrounds. At Hell Creek Ranch & Campground, "Direct connections to the Waterloo Pinckney trail system" make it easy to access trails. One camper noted it's "Perfect campasite to explore surroundings with your Mountain Bike! We loved the trails for Mountain Bikes that are close to the Campsite! They are super fun!!"

Paddling on the chain of lakes: Launch from various access points to explore connected waterways. A visitor at Bishop Lake Campground shared, "The lake was nice but you have to walk a trail to get to it from the campground or drive. Nice walking trails. Our favorite was the lake for kayaking." The clear water and multiple connected lakes make for excellent day trips.

Swimming and beach activities: Several campgrounds offer designated swimming areas with varying amenities. One camper at W. J. Hayes State Park Campground described, "Huge beach, large boat dock and lots of campsite spaces w power... Family friendly picnic areas with tables are spaced along the beach." For kids, several locations have "a swimming pool and playground with basketball court."

    What campers like

Backpacking experiences: The Blind Lake Rustic Campground offers unique hike-in only sites. A visitor explained, "This is a rustic campground right on beautiful blind lake. It is only accessible by foot/bike/or boat. The hike/bike is about 7 miles or 4 (depending on where you park). The paddle in works out to be about 2.5 miles from the Halfmoon boat launch."

Wildlife viewing: Dawn and dusk offer the best chances to spot local animals. At Portage Lake Campground, one winter camper recalled, "We were greeted by a deer crossing our path. Cranes, Swans, Geese, and even a Bald Eagle soared by. I also noticed some coyote tracks in the snow as well."

Stargazing: Several campgrounds have open areas perfect for night sky viewing. One camper mentioned, "We were able to see some awesome stars at night" while another noted they "saw more stars than we've seen in a long time." The area has minimal light pollution compared to nearby Detroit and Ann Arbor.

    What you should know

Reservation timing: Many campgrounds fill quickly, especially during summer months. One camper at Green Lake Rustic Campground advised, "While you technically don't need a reservation, we made our reservations through the DNR website about a month in advance. The campsite was listed as 'full' when we arrived, so I was glad we took the extra step."

Insect activity: Mosquitoes can be problematic, particularly near wetlands. A visitor warned, "Watch for the dense population of ground bees that were in front of all 3 vault toilets, and along the main path to the yurt and water pump. Bees are part of the natural outdoors, but there were dozens of active entrances dug into walking & driving paths."

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds have road noise or higher activity levels. One camper mentioned, "The freeway is on the other side of the lake, but it didn't bother us. At night it was like white noise," while others noted, "Barking dogs, teenagers running through and past campsites until around 11pm. All fell pretty quiet by midnight, after rangers walked through."

    Tips for camping with families

Beach amenities: For water activities with kids, some beaches offer more facilities than others. At Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern, "There is a decent sandy beach here with a playground and volleyball net. Also in the park are some small dirt trails for hiking and biking."

Educational programs: Several campgrounds run seasonal activities for children. At Hayes State Park, "coffee/hot coco was provided by the campsite each morning" and they offer "lots of activities for the family by camp staff." Another camper noted there are "weekend events and activities" at various locations.

Kid-friendly sites: Some campgrounds specifically cater to families with playgrounds and open spaces. One visitor observed, "Playgrounds everywhere for the kids. Giant dog park and ponds," while another mentioned "a nice play area for the children and clean bathrooms. The park workers walk around and tell you about the activities they have that day."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for privacy: Choose sites carefully based on shade and separation. At Hayes State Park, "sites 93-96 for more private/shaded sites" are recommended. Another camper advised, "If your longer than 40ft be aware most sites will not work for you here, they do have some but the wood line, privacy and nature is great."

Hookup limitations: Water connections aren't available at all campgrounds. A visitor noted, "Nice campground with rustic, elec, water/elec (30 amp), and concrete pad sites," while another mentioned, "Only downfall is no water hookups on site" at certain locations.

Dump station access: Several campgrounds share facilities or have limited dump stations. One camper observed people "using the dump station here at this park" even when camping elsewhere. Some campgrounds have "sanitary-dump" facilities on-site while others require driving to neighboring parks.
