Reservations are strongly recommended during summer weekends and holiday periods when occupancy rates peak.

McGinnis Lake Modern Campground — Holly Recreation Area

The State of Michigan has dropped the ball…

No sewer or dumps is available at this campground (April 2022). You will have to dump elsewhere. If there was a memo I missed it. Made reservation in winter 2021. Had great Verizon and ok TMobile service. Site itself was easy to level and adequate for our big rig. It was one of 4 50 amp sites in the park. Nice large grassy site and the park was not very full.

    Groveland Oaks County Park

    Kid friendly

This campground has a lake for swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing. Lots for kids to do... also skate park and 2 playgrounds. Full hookup area is away from most of the weekend traffic with a short cut to get to where all the kids stuff is located. I think it is a little pricier than most monthly rentals in southeast Michigan. We chose for the convenient location for spending the weekends. Our campsite was a little difficult to get into because it was on a curve and there was a seasonal camper with a Class A right across from our site which didn’t allow for a lot of space to maneuver our 26 ft travel trailer. It was, however, fairly close to the park and restrooms.

    Covenant Hills Camp

    Family Friendly and Quiet

Large sites, all full hookup. Plenty of onsight activities on the weekend. Large play areas, dog run, basketball court, lots of walking trails, and family friendly.

    Forester Park Campground

Friendly, but tight and odd utilities

First, some seasonal residents were extremely helpful with our campfire woes. All of the neighbors and their kids were awesome.

We chose this campground because it was close to our home and it was a short trip for our opening weekend.

The store, staff, and ice cream shop were great. We even bought t-shirts to commemorate!

The price was reasonable for 2 nights on memorial day weekend with full hookups and 30 amps ($40 a night). Water was clean a d strong. No issues with electricity.

Some issues we had that we were not expecting: The sewer and water spigot were on opposite ends of our site. I had to race to Raymond's hardware(also friendly!) in town for a 50 foot fresh water hose before they closed.

We also don't not have a slide out, but our trailer was brushed against a tall tree/bush. If we weren't against the tree, our awning may have been against the opposite neighbors' trailer.

The sewer access was slightly uphill from our site, so that caused some issues as well.

In conclusion: We'd definitely return, but we'd be careful about the site location.

    Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

    Nice Michigan State Park

Camped here opening weekend of 2022 (April 29). Nice park with several sites for our bigger rig. Leveling would be more of the challenge. But, we eventually got to 145 which was pretty good and very doable from leveling Stand point. Large well kept grassy site. Nice fire ring. No water or sewer at site but fill and dump available in park. Our Verizon WiFi coverage was good as was our TMobile. Staff was very accommodating and helpful. Seemed there to serve. We experienced no issues with our 30 amp (20 & 30 only available). Didn’t need air conditioning but electric heat was our main heat source and worked fine.

    The Holly Campground

    KOA

We normally have no issues with KOAs. It is preseason, and still early, so we understand there’s some bumps. But we had a difficult time finding a site that would work for our rig. Everything was soggy, roads washed out and our rig sank. Very few full hook up sites and none available for long term (month or more).

    Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

    Quick get away

Wonderful place for a quick get away. Park is clean. Beach is a 1.8 mile hike from the East loop in the campground but is well worth the walk. (Trail is not stroller/wagon friendly) If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad. Extensive mountain biking trails and the lake is open to boating, kayaking, and other water sports. Park offers lots of private sites! We stayed in site 118 and could not see neighboring sites! The site was very spacious and offered picnic table, fire ring, paved pad, and electrical hook up. (hook up in this specific site was considerably far away.)

    Outdoor Adventures Lake Shore Resort

Large campground. Over 700 sites and 70+ cabins. Open year-round.

Great opportunities for winter sports. Pools, lakes, mini golf. Designed for young families. Pet friendly but has restrictions on the type of dog.

Guide to Avoca

Tent and RV sites near Avoca, Michigan offer camping options along the Black River and Lake Huron shorelines. The region spans Sanilac and St. Clair counties with summer temperatures typically ranging from 75-85°F during peak camping season. Many campgrounds close seasonally between October and April, though a few maintain year-round operations with limited winter amenities.

What to do

Mini-golf courses: Jellystone Park North Port Huron offers on-site mini-golf among its many recreational options. "The mini gold course was torn up in several places. The ponds and water areas were not working. Entire course has been neglected," reports one camper, suggesting checking course conditions before planning this activity.

Hiking trails nearby: McGinnis Lake Modern Campground provides marked trails through wooded areas. "Pretty park with several well marked trails. We stayed in the Maple loop which had several semi-private sites screened from neighbors by trees," shares one reviewer who appreciated the natural surroundings.

Swimming options: Campgrounds offer varied swimming facilities including pools, splash pads, and lake access. "There is a very nice kid friendly pool. Park is clean, store well stocked," notes a visitor about Jellystone Park North Port Huron.

What campers like

Affordable rustic camping: P.L. Graham Park & Campground offers budget-friendly sites. "We showed up fresh off the road from AZ starting a new life here in the great state of Michigan. Lake Huron access: Lexington Park Campground provides convenient lake access. "Only park in the area with trees for shade at your site AND access to Lake Huron. Wish there was a little more privacy between the sites but would go back!" notes one visitor highlighting this key benefit.

Clean facilities: Multiple campgrounds maintain well-kept bathrooms and showers. "Full immaculate restrooms and showers. Beach area adjacent and park with playground and picnic area," writes a Lexington Park camper.
