What to do
Explore historical trails and parks: Hanscom AFB FamCamp serves as an excellent basecamp for visiting nearby historical sites. "Close to minute man historical sites- revolutionary war historical trails and Ranger Station. Not too far from Boston," notes Caitlin B. This military-exclusive campground provides access beyond just comfortable accommodations.
Kayak on nearby ponds: George Washington State Campground features a beautiful man-made lake for water activities. "There is a nice beach for children. The water was warm and clean. You can kayak or canoe. The dogs cannot go on the beach, but they can go in the boats," reports Jessica W. The campground maintains clean facilities with new bathhouses.
Hike wooded trails: Willard Brook State Forest Campground provides access to various hiking paths. "There are hiking trails in the area and, of course, swimming at the small pond. A nearby roadside waterfall offers another picnic area opportunity. For a longer hike, you can hike to and from Pearl Lake State Park," explains Jean C. The forest maintains quieter camping experiences compared to larger facilities.
What campers like
Small, tranquil settings: The Pine Campground offers a more intimate camping experience. "Nice little campground. Very home like campground. Wish it had a pound to swim in but it does have a small stream that runs along a good amount of the sites so you can wake up to a nice sound of trickling water," writes Michael V. Many visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere.
Quality showers and bathrooms: Pawtuckaway State Park Campground maintains clean facilities. "The closest bath/shower was well kept, with four bathroom stalls and the one huge shower, I imagine that the wait times in the summer months might be a hassle but in the off season it was hardly used," notes Ellen C. Waterfront sites provide additional appeal for glamping enthusiasts.
Privacy between sites: Otter River State Forest features sites with adequate separation. "The sites that are near the small pond are generally larger and have better space for pitching a tent. The sites on the first two loops/spur roads are smaller and most of them are designated for tents only or tents/popups," explains Jean C. The campground also offers yurts for glamping near Bolton.
What you should know
Seasonal availability varies: Most glamping facilities operate on limited schedules. "Military only campground. Working on improving the grounds and services available. Limited sites available off season. Summer season early May through end October," reports Heather C. about Hanscom AFB FamCamp. Most area campgrounds close between late October and mid-May.
Bathroom quality differs between locations: Wells State Park Campground recently upgraded facilities. "Beautiful park! Yes you will hear the road so plan accordingly and not all sites are level. The best plus side ever...NEW HUGE bathrooms!!" says Ryan C. However, other campgrounds may have more basic facilities.
