What to do
Explore historic sites: Near Hanscom AFB FamCamp, visitors can discover Revolutionary War history. "Close to minute man historical sites- revolutionary war historical trails and Ranger Station. Not too far from Boston," notes one camper. The proximity to Lexington and Concord makes this location valuable for history enthusiasts.
Watch planes take off: Aviation enthusiasts staying at Hanscom can observe aircraft at the small airport adjacent to the campground. "Small camp ground, close to Boston, only 25 miles out. Kinda cool watching the airplanes take off and land with the small airport next door," shares one visitor, highlighting an unusual activity not common at other campgrounds.
Paddle the lake: Pawtuckaway State Park Campground offers excellent water recreation opportunities on its lake. "This a a fantastic little camp for if you want to go canoeing or kayaking or boating of any kind! It's set up of three islands and a large majority of the campsites are right on the water," writes a reviewer. Canoe and kayak rentals are available during summer months.
What campers like
Oceanfront camping: Winter Island Park provides rare shore access. "The campground is right on the ocean with incredible harbor views. It was an easy bike ride to the Salem Ferry to get access into Boston for the day," notes one reviewer. The beach offers both sand and interesting tide pools for exploration.
Convenient base for urban exploration: Winter Island's location allows access to Salem's attractions. "Small camp. Have very few campsites, you definitely need to reserve a spot before you come. The manager, David, is super friendly and helped me out BIG because I didn't have a reservation and they were filled up. Very close to down town Salem!" reports a satisfied camper.
Clean facilities: George Washington State Campground earns praise for its maintenance. "Sites were well spaced and provided some privacy depending on your site choice. Grounds were well kept, bathrooms were very clean with hot showers (bring quarters, $1.50 for 6mins). Staff was friendly and helpful, with park rangers making regular rounds," shares one visitor. Multiple reviewers mention the cleanliness standards.
What you should know
Site selection matters: At Normandy Farms Campground, campsites vary significantly in quality and proximity. "It is s little on the pricey side, but has great amenities for campers with kids and pets. Not a fan of gravel sites (would have preferred grass), and the sites are really close together, but there was always plenty to do," notes one camper. Different loops offer varying levels of privacy.
Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds near Arlington fill quickly, especially during summer weekends. Advance planning is essential. "This is a nice spot to stop. It has e/w/s hook up and an ok shower facility that needs a bit of a facelift. Dogs are welcome but there really isn't a space/park area for them to run off leash," reports a Hanscom visitor.
Ferry schedules: For glamping in Boston Harbor, understanding transportation timing is critical. Multiple campgrounds offer access to Boston via ferries, but schedules vary seasonally. Winter Island Park provides access to the Salem ferry, while Boston Harbor Islands require planning around harbor ferry schedules.
Tips for camping with families
Activity-focused resorts: Cape Ann Camp Site provides entertainment for children close to beaches. "We had a great time camping and going to the beach. The camp ground is full of beautiful boulders and fire pits. We were tent camping and were very happy with our site," shares one family. The beach is within walking distance of most sites.
Pack extra beach gear: Families glamping in Arlington and visiting coastal sites should bring towels, water shoes, and sun protection. Winter Island Park and Cape Ann both offer beach access where tidal exploration becomes a natural activity option.
Reserve waterfront sites: At Pawtuckaway, waterfront sites are prime for families. "The sites on the water book up quickly but they're perfect for fishing and boating. Also, the view!" notes a camper. These sites provide both recreation and entertainment for children without leaving camp.
Tips from RVers
Military options: Hanscom AFB FamCamp offers excellent value for eligible military families and retirees. "The HanscomField Fam Camp is a wooded recreational camp for military families and retirees, as well as for RV camping for active duty military on temporary orders. The campground offers RV sites, some with hookups, as well as more walk-in secluded tent sites as well as one yurt tent," explains a visitor. Military ID requirements apply.
Sewer connections: Many glamping spots near Arlington offer full hookups, but not all. "We drove 3-1/2 days from Idaho to get to a COVID testing site which would take non MA residents and turn the results around under 48 hours. We needed quiet camping and not have it cost a fortune. Winter Island Park accepted our same day reservation for two nights and they're very reasonable rates," shares one long-distance traveler.
