    Venture River RV park

Quiet Off-Season Stop with Big Sites and Lake Views

We called for reservations on the way into Venture River RV Park and had no problem getting the site we wanted since it was off-season and mid-week. We were told the office would be closed and that we would receive an informational email with details like the Wi-Fi code, but we did not; not a big deal for an overnight, especially since we used our T-Mobile Home Internet. We selected back-in Site 39 with full hookups, which turned out to be an easy back-in along the small lake. The site was fairly level and we were impressed with the large yard area that even included a wooden bench swing. Utilities were centered, though the electric pedestal sat toward the rear and required about 35 feet of cord for our rig. Water pressure was very good and we used a reducer. We picked up two bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. There are not many trees, so satellite should work well, and spacing is decent for this type of campground, especially between Sites 38 and 39. The park sits on a lake with the Venture River water park across the way, and we expect it would be very popular during the summer season. There is a restroom building with shower stalls toward the back that has seen better days. No laundry and no formal dog area, but there is plenty of room to walk pets. During this quieter time of year, this made a very good overnight stop on our way back to our home base near St. Louis.

    Great for Dirt Biking

Ohv park that’s public but has phenomenal boondocks right on the lake. Potable water and great single track if you can find it.

    Jackson Falls

Great spot if you have the right equipment!

Our family had a great time camping here! The road leading into the campsite is mostly gravel with a few rough patches. There are a few shallow creek crossings to reach the more remote spots (water levels may vary depending on rainfall).

4x4 isn’t necessarily required, but I’d highly recommend it—along with a high-clearance vehicle. We brought our Jeep Wrangler, and it handled everything like a champ. We didn’t even need to engage 4x4 the entire way in.

There are a few campsites you can access without crossing the creeks, but the dispersed site we stayed at was surprisingly clean. We only found a couple small pieces of trash—otherwise, it was spotless. Previous campers left some firewood and kindling near the rock fire ring, and we made sure to do the same for the next group.

We camped during the weekdays, and it was nice and quiet. As we were leaving on Friday, more people were starting to show up, so I’d assume weekends get pretty busy. That said, most campers didn’t go past the first creek, so the farther back you go, the fewer people you’ll run into.

One thing to note: I have Verizon, and I was on SOS the entire time—so don’t expect reliable service out there if you have Verizon.

    Jackson Falls

    Decent place to stay

There is tent camping in the area of the bath house that doesn’t require any creek crossing. Now, getting to the more remote spots can be sketchy if you have a small or very loaded vehicle. There are two small creeks to cross and are somewhat rough to get through. I made it through in my minivan, but dragged through the second creek.

There are hiking trails that run through, but that’s about all I can say about that.

I had no Verizon cell service unless I walked about 2/10 of a mile up a hill to an opening and only then I could make a phone call, but I couldn’t access the Internet.

    Touch of Nature Education Center

Amazing experience at Touch of Nature Education Center!

I had an amazing experience at Touch of Nature Education Center! As a student who loves exploring the outdoors, I found the facilities to be very educational and fun at the same time. I am glad I chose this destination after a hard study year. With the help of tutors (check mysupergeek review) and their professional guidence I finished my study year successfully! And with the help of Touch of Nature Education Center, I recharged fully for the next study year!

The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, making it a great place to learn about nature while enjoying camping and outdoor activities. It’s a perfect spot for students to connect with nature, learn new skills, and take a break from studying. Highly recommended for anyone looking to combine education with outdoor adventure!

Pharoah - Garden of the Gods Rec Area Campground

Who knew places like this exist back east!?

This is a stunning but small campground on top of a crazy high ridge surrounded by cliffs. I had no idea landscapes like this existed in Illinois and was pleasantly surprised. The campground was super clean, though it seemed like everything was shut down for the season. It was a pleasant surprise.

Tween the Lakes RV Park & Campground

    Easy to Access

We are traveling in a 45 ft fifth wheel. This campground was easy to access, we did not hear any traffic noise, and the campground is in a valley, making it pretty quiet. We really enjoyed the trails next door to the river, great hiking, and walking the dogs.

    Beautiful spot but ...$$

Don't get fooled! We have the America the beautiful pass and she charged us $35 because she said it was up to her discretion to charge full price on the weekends. What a joke!

Situated along the Ohio River at approximately 370 feet elevation, this area experiences temperature swings from below freezing in winter months to humid 90°F days in summer. Primitive camping options typically range from $0-20 per night, with most sites offering basic amenities and limited cell service.

What to do

Hiking geological features: Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area offers several interconnecting trails through unique rock formations. "The hiking is incredible," notes one visitor, while another mentions "a natural rock bridge (and climb the steel ladder), springs, or Devils Backbone" as highlights within the trail system.

Swimming in natural pools: Pine Ridge provides access to swimming areas during warmer months. "A great, centralized location for quite a few natural wonders," reports one camper, while another specifically mentions "fun paddling on the lake" and "a 2 mile loop road that goes around the whole campground and down to a beach access point for a gorgeous lake."

Rock climbing: Jackson Falls attracts climbers to its sandstone formations. "This place is popular with climbers," notes one visitor. Another mentions "forests and great big, moss covered boulders. It was fun climbing down to the bottom of the falls, even with small kids."

Ferry crossing: Visit Kentucky via the Ohio River ferry near Cave-in-Rock State Park. "If you are coming from the south you will have to take the ferry across the river. Sometimes there is a pretty good wait," explains one camper. Another adds, "We took the ferry which is a quick fun ride."

What campers like

Historical features: Cave-in-Rock State Park showcases a unique cave with river pirate history. One camper explains, "Short walk down to the historical cave where river pirates and a few other notorious bad guys stayed. Definitely worth a look after taking the ferry across from Amish country."

Fishing access: Tower Rock Campground offers direct river access. A camper notes it's "ideal for fishermen" while another mentions it's "by the Ohio river and is very open... has a great view of the Ohio river and across you can see Kentucky."

Wildlife viewing: Pharoah Campground provides opportunities to see native wildlife. "The views are some of the best around," shares a visitor, while another warns about nature encounters: "There was poison ivy everywhere along the trail which made for a stressful hike, trying to keep ourselves on the trail without rubbing against the poison ivy."

Night sky viewing: Remote camping areas offer minimal light pollution. A Bell Smith Springs visitor commented it was "pitch black at night" while another at Camp Cadiz noted "Dark nights with star gazing and even a little bit of that eerie scary movie vibe at the far end of the lake where it's a little too quiet."

What you should know

Water availability: Many primitive sites have limited or no water sources. At Jackson Falls, one camper advises: "There is no water source and bring lots of wood. We scavenged wood from the hills around but ultimately had to leave and purchase wood."

Hunting seasons: Campgrounds get busier during hunting periods. A Camp Cadiz visitor reported: "Camp filled up with hunters who started generators at 3 in the morning to get ready to head out for turkey."

Road conditions: Many access roads are unpaved and potentially challenging. At Jackson Falls, a camper warns: "Hill down to trail head could get slick if wet weather. Was a little nervous getting out after it had rained."

Site availability: First-come, first-served is standard at most locations. At Camp Cadiz Campground, a visitor noted: "I arrived at 7pm on Friday and snagged the last site." For Pine Ridge, another camper advised: "Try to come as early as possible to make sure you get a good spot."

Tips for camping with families

Best family-friendly sites: Lake Glendale Recreation Area provides developed facilities. "Lake Glendale is a true southern Illinois gem. They have recently improved the shower houses, the kids love the playground, and there is SO much shade!"

Water activities: Plan for swimming during hot months. At Bell Smith Springs, a visitor shares: "We found some beautiful hiking and water holes," while another mentions "a spring/large swimming hole, with a few places to jump off of."

Educational opportunities: Visit nearby historical sites. "We visited the Chocolate factory as well, which was a real treat," mentions one Lake Glendale camper. At Bell Smith Springs, another notes you can "hike to the natural rock bridge (and climb the steel ladder), springs, or Devils Backbone."

Wildlife awareness: Teach children about identifying plants. "Tons of poison ivy but you're in nature so it's a given," notes one Bell Smith Springs visitor, while another at Jackson Falls warns: "There are lots of ticks and poison ivy everywhere."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose larger campgrounds for bigger rigs. At Lake Glendale Recreation Area, a camper notes: "Wooded, semi private sites (at least for tents), full hook ups for RV's... There were a few sites with good lake views, with the majority of those in the RV loop."

Access considerations: Not all forest roads accommodate large vehicles. A Tower Rock visitor warned: "The actual campground is basically a mowed area in the woods close to the river" while a Jackson Falls camper specifically mentioned: "I run a 28ft RV and we're able to cross the first water wash without problem... The further sights will require crossing several wash outs."

Hookup availability: Only select campgrounds offer electrical service. At Pine Ridge, a visitor specified: "The left loop has power 50/30/20 amp hook ups but no water or sewer on the campsite" and another at Lake Glendale mentioned "Nice shaded sites w electric and water hookups."
