John James Audubon State Park Campground accommodates pets with limited trail access, offering only one dog-friendly trail while maintaining pet-friendly camping areas. The campground features both primitive tent sites and RV hookups with electricity and water, all within a compact, intimate setting. Sites along the right side of the campground border Highway 41, resulting in constant traffic noise. The bathrooms remain consistently clean with friendly staff maintaining the facilities. Most sites include picnic tables, though several campers note the close proximity of sites with minimal privacy between them.

Harmonie State Park Campground and Diamond Lake Resort both welcome pets throughout their camping areas with more spacious layouts. Campers can access multiple boat-in locations at Harmonie State Park, while Diamond Lake offers year-round accommodations with full hookups. The 4H Center Campground receives consistently high ratings for its pet-friendly policies, level pull-through sites, and walking trails suitable for dog exercise. Many sites feature afternoon shade, creating comfortable environments for pets during summer months. Lake Mauzy East provides more rustic options with basic toilet facilities but no hookups, offering a more natural setting for pets to explore while following leash regulations throughout the grounds.

      Huggins Haven RV Campground

      Beautiful campground

This place is a hidden gem back in the woods, the owner met us when we arrived and gave us all of the information we needed. This place has a beautiful fishing pond, dog park and a nice walking trail. Perfect for anyone stopping through for the night or wanting to spend the week. Highly recommend!

      Western Kentucky RV Park

For a short stay.. Western KY RV Park is okay.

For a short stay I'd come back again. The RV Park is close to shopping , in case you forgot something or didn't get a chance to stick up. However, the park itself leaves much to be desired. Though there are showers( pressure low and get in early for hot water or sometimes late at night so the propane can heat more) they are relatively clean. It mentioned a dog park, which is more like a run. For noise, there really isn't much in the park, probably due to the long list of rules, but the Kentucky Park Way is rather noisy! The park has lights so you really can't enjoy the night sky especially with lights from the city .The park is maintained and has 24/7 surveillance. Each site has hook up for 30 and 50 along with water and waste hook ups. They do allow for RV's to pull in and empty for a small fee. They have electric as well for .22 a kw. The only other thing I can really say is the manager is super nice and will accommodate you the best she can. Has laundry room for 2.oo a load. Machines are mediocre. So if I had to, or was in a spot of having to stop for either a weekend or a day , it's fine. Most of the campers here are ppl. who are working out of town, so they stay here- which makes perfect sense, otherwise,if you're looking to kick back and enjoy amenities , or for completely no sound of the eternal rat race .. keep searching this ain't the place. Want to add there are no fires allowed on the ground. So no fire pits unless you have your own that is raised.

      Scales Lake Park

      Excellent Primitive Site

This was our first time camping and I must say I absolutely loved our site. We were on a primitive site number 109. Though the ground was a little rocky the lake views were spectacular. There was a porto potty in walking distance. When we first arrived it was pretty clean but after the weekend it was really bad and ran out of toilet paper. But the bathroom facilities by the slide were great you just had to drive to it from the primitive sites. Water slide was a blast and loved the petting zoo, also the volleyball court was a fun addition too. Though a little close to the road. All in all we will definitely be staying there again.

Warrick County Park Scales Lake Park

      Peaceful But Plain

A very peaceful place to camp with helpful rangers. There was a free petting zoo which was great but the animals seemed very discontented. The trails were interesting but vacant of trail markers and some plaques were vandalized from years before. Firewood is $8 a bundle and parking is $3 a day. Well priced and serene, but I would recommend this for people without children or someone looking for a camp away from any kind of excitement.

John James Audubon State Park Campground

      History now

John J Audubon State Park has some awesome architecture and the feel of old school parks.

Near Henderson, Ky off the Pennyrile Parkway and a stone throw away from Evansville, In.

The campground is at the front of the park. Not huge, and it was not crowded when we visited. Plenty of sites to pick from.

The trails are nice, there is only one that allows dogs. The onsite buildings are old school and have to be seen to be appreciated. Worth the trip or a nice stop off enroute somewhere else.

      Scales Lake Park

      Friendly family place

Nice beach, trails and playground. Friendly camper. Pet friendly. Would've given 5 stars but our site was tight. Squeezed between 2 sites, out the front door fight to neighbors sewer hose.

    Guide to Henderson

Camping areas near Henderson, Kentucky range across 325-450 feet of elevation in the Ohio River Valley, with mild winters and humid summers averaging 89°F in July. The region experiences approximately 46 inches of annual rainfall, creating lush surroundings at most campgrounds from April through October when most facilities operate at full capacity.

    What to do

Hiking trails with specific restrictions: At John James Audubon State Park Campground, dog owners should note limited pet access. As Drew C. mentions, "I just want to start by saying this is a really neat park. The only problem that I have with it is if you have a dog there's only one trail that is dog friendly."

Visit local historic sites: Garden of the Gods Recreation Area puts campers near unique geological formations just a two-hour drive from Henderson. "The formations are amazing!! We love to hike here in the fall when it's cooler outside and when the leaves are changing it's absolutely beautiful," shares Robin M.

Water recreation options: Miles Landing Campground provides fishing opportunities within walking distance of campsites. A reviewer notes, "Fairly new with great access to fishing. Bike riding enjoying nature. Several pull through sites and all are full hook up."

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Vanderburgh 4H Campground maintains well-kept shower houses and restrooms. One camper observed, "The bathhouses are clean and well maintained. The bonus for me is that the camp host/manager did a great job of communicating with me."

Spacious campsites: Miles Landing offers room to spread out compared to more crowded options. "The sites were very spacious and far enough apart that you had room to spread out. The bathrooms were probably the cleanest, nicest shower houses I've seen at a campground," reports Jacinda L.

Nature viewing opportunities: Lake Mauzy East provides rustic camping with abundant wildlife. "Absolutely beautiful! Been traveling 150 days, 23 states plus DC... Super quiet, tons of birds, and we saw snake mounds but not yet seen one...birds and butterflies and owls...OH MY," writes Adrianne.

    What you should know

Weekend availability challenges: Pharoah - Garden of the Gods Rec Area Campground operates on a first-come basis with limited sites. Erick S. advises, "Only downside is that there are only 12 sites, and they are first come, first serve... so you might want to have a second option on a weekend."

Noise considerations: Sites at John James Audubon State Park adjacent to Highway 41 experience constant traffic noise. Laura E. notes, "The campground is layed out parallel to highway 41. The sound of traffic whizzing by on the highway is constant."

Seasonal differences: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Henderson operate with reduced services outside peak season. For example, Pharoah Campground provides basic amenities year-round but has limited water access in winter months.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Diamond Lake Resort Campground offers water recreation for children. "We camped here and enjoyed our time fishing and going on the go carts. It was also nice to ride the golf cart around the park to get around," says Megan W.

Educational opportunities: Harmonie State Park Campground provides nature programs for children during summer months. "They have a nature center in the middle of the campground that is open Thursday-Sunday in the summer. There are 3 playgrounds throughout the campground," explains Olivia S.

Budget-friendly options: Lake Mauzy East offers free camping with basic amenities. Richy R. explains, "This is an amazing spot for free camping! The tent pads are right by the water, offering stunning lake views. Each site comes equipped with a fire ring, picnic table, and access to toilets."

    Tips from RVers

Level sites availability: Vanderburgh 4H Campground provides some of the most level sites in the region. Robert O. comments, "Level pull through FHU clean nice afternoon shade. The sites are nearby but feels more roomy than it is. We stay here everytime we can."

Pet exercise areas: Burdette Park offers dog walking trails near RV sites. A visitor noted, "Was looking for a quiet area, and not some drive-through campsite, this fit the bill. Great groundskeepers, good trail for dogs, nice view of the pond from the main RV area."

Seasonal RV accommodations: Diamond Lake Resort Campground provides year-round options for RVers with full hookups. However, Brandon R. cautions about space limitations: "RVS and campers are packed in like sardines and it is an extremely high priced, 490 for just two weeks!!"
