Best Campgrounds near Perry, KS

Perry State Park Campground serves as the primary camping destination in Perry, Kansas, situated along Perry Lake. The park features a mix of RV and tent camping areas with various levels of amenities, including both primitive sites and developed campgrounds with utilities. Additional camping options include Rock Creek Park and COE Perry Lake Slough Creek Park, both offering waterfront sites with electric hookups. Cabin accommodations are available at Kansas City West-Lawrence KOA, approximately 15 miles east of Perry. Most established campgrounds in the area accommodate both tent and RV camping, with several offering full hookups for recreational vehicles.

Many campgrounds near Perry Lake operate seasonally, with peak availability from April through October. Rock Creek operates from May through September, while Slough Creek Park is open from April to mid-October. Reservations are recommended for weekend camping, particularly during summer months when waterfront sites fill quickly. Winter camping options are limited, though Perry State Park Campground remains open year-round with reduced services. Most campgrounds feature gravel pads that are generally level, though some primitive areas may have uneven terrain. "Slough Creek at Lake Perry is an Army Corps of Engineers campsite that has spread out sites with lots of mature trees. Some sites very near the water. Great access to boat ramps as well," noted one frequent visitor.

Waterfront access stands out as the defining feature of camping in the Perry area, with multiple reviews highlighting proximity to the lake as a key advantage. Sites backing up to coves receive particularly high ratings, offering convenient fishing and kayak access. "We stayed here October in the Worthington loop and by far it has been our favorite site. HUGE lot that backs up to a small cove for easy fishing and kayak access," shared one camper. Weekend camping can become crowded and noisy, especially during summer holidays, with several reviews mentioning loud music carrying across the water. Bathrooms and shower facilities vary in quality across campgrounds, with some locations offering only basic vault toilets. Mature trees provide good shade at many established sites, particularly in the Slough Creek area, creating comfortable camping conditions even during hot Kansas summers.

Quail Run Campground — Hillsdale State Park

Relaxing place to camp and enjoy nature

All in all I really enjoyed tent camping at one of the primitive sites! My dad and I used two separate tents, each of which are six person tents, and it was easy to fit both on the campsite. I didn’t love the fire ring because the wall was pretty high and the grill part didn’t have adjustable height so that limited the height of the fire we could build when we wanted to cook over it. The nearby vault toilet was just OK, it was about as clean as a vault toilet could be but there was no way to use hand sanitizer or wash your hands nearby. The shower house with flush toilets, which was a little further away, was clean but didn’t have any hand soap, it only had hand sanitizer which was a disappointment.

Those were really the only drawbacks to this campsite though! Everything else was lovely. I liked that there was a small camp store nearby with firewood for purchase during operating hours. The scenery was very nice and even though there were a lot of RVs in their section of the campground, I didn’t hear any noise coming from their air-conditioning thanks to the distance between that section and the primitive section.

Being almost completely surrounded by the lake was so serene and we got to hear and see a lot of wildlife. The only other thing to know about this spot on the campground is that if you’re going to the primitive sites, you will have to park nearby and then walk the rest of the way with your gear. At the site I was in that was only a couple of yards but other ones were further away.

Also, a note about spiders: there were way more than I’ve ever seen while camping before, so if large amounts of them bother you I suggest you not camp here in October! Most of them were small, but seeing them so often was still kind of gross. Such is life when camping though!

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

    Quiet, clean campground.

My reservation was for the 15th of September, just at the end of the camping season, and so the park was quiet. The park ranger was wonderful. I stayed in space #019, which was perfect for my 19' camper van. Other than electric, I didn't use any other services, so I cannot comment on facilities. I would stay here again.

The town of Weston is walkable from the park. I left before the shops opened, but the town was quaint and inviting.

    Cedar Park

    Beautiful area.

Great area, friendly guests even the kids showing up on the weekends were well behaved. One vault toilet they maintain the best they can. Area is patrolled by Park Rangers and law enforcement, not sure if local, county, or state. While there the park placed plaques marking site numbers and eventually they will add a kiosk that will have a QR code for payment, they were not sure what the fee would be (free for now). The sites are huge and not right on top of each other, they offer a picnic table, fire ring, and a gravel parking spot for your camper or grassy areas for tents. Very dusty roads getting here but worth it. Watch out for wildlife, deer, turkeys, and vultures are always on the roads including the pup that chases you're truck, just down the road from here, lol. Hope this helps, Happy camping you all!

    Calvin's RV & Tent Camping

    Calvin's RV

A small RV park on the east edge of Wamego KS. Full electric (30A,50A, and 120V), water, and sanitary dump. Most sites are paved pull through sites. Booking online through Rover Pass was simple and affordable. There is a guest bathroom in the basement of the office building. We were greeted by the owner and the grounds are well maintained and quiet. Just 20 min from Manhattan.

    Eisenhower State Park Campground

    Eisenhower SP spaciousness

This was our first visit and we chose a campsite on-line. The COE has done an admirable job developing this lakeside area for plentiful campsites and decent shade. The showers and facilities were clean and maintained well. The camp store is minimal and only open a few hours in the evening. Access to the water is easy so bring watercraft and swimming attire. The lake is almost 7,000 acres so our kayak exploring only covered a small portion.

Guide to Perry

Clinton Lake camping areas provide alternatives to Perry Lake for campers near Perry, Kansas. Located within a 20-minute drive from Perry, Clinton Lake offers several campgrounds with terrain that transitions from open grassland to wooded areas. The area features more secluded camping options with access to hiking trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty.

What to do

Hiking and wildlife viewing: Prairie Clover Campground at Clinton State Park offers extensive trail networks. "Saw eagles, turkey vultures, and possible osprey," notes Kent F. The park includes specialized recreation facilities beyond standard lake activities. "Rolling hills and lots of green with many trails and recreational facilities including more unusual things like archery," shares Amber A.

Water sports access: Woodridge Park has secluded primitive campsites with lake access. "Site 4 is right on the lake and had a beautiful view of the sunrise," reports Alexandra J. Trails lead to waterfront sites that are rarely crowded. "We very rarely run into anyone else while camping on the trail," adds Nikki S.

Disc golf course: Clinton State Park includes disc golf facilities for campers looking for alternative activities. "Full bath houses, disc golf, archery range, and an abundance of hiking all around the camps," mentions Charles F., who stayed for two weeks during off-season.

What campers like

Secluded sites: Bloomington East at Clinton Lake offers waterfront sites with privacy. "Site 246 was at the bottom of the hill, right on the lake," notes Paul Y. Many sites feature significant distance between neighbors. "While lots of big RVs, it was not crowded down by the lakefront sites."

Hammock-friendly areas: Perry State Park has designated areas for hammock camping. "The primitive sites and RV sites are extremely close (especially the RV sites) other than that they have dedicated hammock sites!" shares Darius C. Woodridge Park also caters to hammock campers: "Lots of hammock tree setups too," notes Daniel T.

Free camping options: Several primitive camping areas near Perry don't require fees. "Free dispersed camping at camp area 3. Showers have warm water," reports Dan K. about Prairie Clover Campground. These areas typically provide basic facilities while still offering lake access.

What you should know

Train noise: Kansas City West-Lawrence KOA experiences significant train disruptions. "Trains passed by really loudly all night long - it finally stopped at about 5am," warns LauraJane B. Multiple reviews mention trains passing approximately every 30 minutes throughout the night.

Weather impacts: Campgrounds in low-lying areas experience flooding effects. "With all of the recent rain, we had a huge puddle separating our pull-through from our picnic table and fire pit," describes Myron C. Trails can become difficult after rain: "Keep in mind though that the trail gets very muddy if it has just rained!" cautions Carly H.

Seasonal insect activity: Specific insect hatches affect camping comfort during certain months. "We went mid-June, and there had apparently been some type of butterfly hatching. They were small but quite aggressive, constantly swarming us," reports Harmony H. about Woodridge Park.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and activities: Rock Creek offers child-friendly facilities. "There is a playground for the young ones that's in great condition with decent options to play on," reports Ian C. The peninsula location provides water views from most campsites.

Swimming areas: Multiple campgrounds feature designated swimming locations. "Large sandy beach" is available at Bloomington East according to Nancy L., making it suitable for families with children. These areas typically have gradual entry points for safer water access.

Kid-friendly camping loops: Some campgrounds have sections better suited for families. "We stayed in Campground 1 in one of the primitive sites. There were many sites to choose from even through there were quite a few campers here during the middle of the week," notes Jessica C. about Prairie Clover Campground.

Tips from RVers

Level sites and hookups: Deer Creek Valley RV Park offers well-maintained concrete pads. "The pull-thru RV pads are huge and the grass in between is sizable for each," reports Sandra V. The park includes fully functional hookups with good lighting. "Wide open lots that were level and the hookups were all lit up so easy to see at night," adds Julie F.

Limited full-hookup options: Many campgrounds offer electric and water but lack sewer connections. "We had water and electric but no sewer, which was a little bit of a pain. However there are full hookup sites, just none available," notes Dan M. about Prairie Clover Campground. Most areas have dump stations located near campground exits.

Wide turning radius: Several campgrounds accommodate larger RVs with pull-through sites. "Great access to boat ramps, fishing dock, and a large sandy beach," explains Nancy L. about Bloomington East. Paved roads throughout many campgrounds make navigation easier for larger rigs.
