Pomona State Park offers primitive camping areas where dispersed camping is allowed without designated sites. The lake provides numerous waterfront locations for pitching tents or parking smaller RVs along the shoreline. Located at 1,002 feet elevation, the area has rolling terrain with seasonal water level fluctuations that can limit access to certain camping areas during heavy rain periods.
What to do
Fishing access points: Clinton Lake has multiple boat ramps and fishing areas for anglers seeking variety. "The park is awesome, spacious sites and level. The park is well taken care of and very easy to get to from I70. We had water and electric but no sewer, which was a little bit of a pain," notes Dan M. about Prairie Clover Campground.
Hiking trail options: Wooded trails around Clinton Lake provide scenic routes from 1-3 miles. "There was a huge puddle separating our pull-through from our picnic table and fire pit. Again, we should have asked for another site. Other than those two disappointments, it was a really good campground, especially for being a state park," shares Myron C. about his experience at Prairie Clover Campground.
Kayaking launch sites: Several gravel boat ramps around the area lakes accommodate small watercraft. "It seems that every spots are waterfront, it's a very nice and clean place, I love it," writes Ray L. about his experience at Osage State Fishing Lake.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many campsites offer substantial space between neighbors. "Sites were nice and spaced out so had no issues with disturbing anyone as I set up. Woke up to a beautiful sunrise," reports Joseph J. from Osage State Fishing Lake.
Quiet weekday camping: Midweek visitors often find peaceful conditions with fewer neighbors. "Very quiet. Littlw disappointed with no true waterfront access," notes Tanner P. about Carbolyn Park, where weekday camping tends to be more secluded.
Accessible waterfront: Several campgrounds offer direct water access without long hikes. "We stayed here one night and wished we had booked a longer trip. The park is awesome, spacious sites and level. Lots of wildlife, hiking, and beautiful lake," explains Dan M.
What you should know
Toilet facilities vary: Some areas have vault toilets while others provide modern restrooms. "Pit toilets in good shape when we arrived Thursday afternoon but kind of rough by the end of the weekend," mentions Lucy P. about her stay at Osage State Fishing Lake.
Seasonal closures: Many campgrounds close water and electric between October and May. "Water and electric are shut off on the 1st of October," warns Greg D. about Michigan Valley.
Limited shade options: Some campgrounds have minimal tree coverage. "The campsites are clean and a nice private distance from each other for the most part. Some sites seem a little more popular and packed in. The bathrooms where clean and the water was hot!" explains Janelle M. about her experience at Bloomington East.
Tips for camping with families
Playgrounds available: Several parks have playground equipment for children. "We appreciate that the layout made it easy for children to move freely and safely among campsites and to restroom facilities and the playground," shares Tori G. from Bloomington East.
Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds. "This is our go to when we go to Clinton Lake," notes Jason B., who appreciates Michigan Valley's location away from major highways.
Swimming beaches: Designated swimming areas provide safe water access. "We have been about 8 times since April and it's our favorite spot hands down!" explains Joshua M. about Pomona State Park Campground, which offers designated swimming areas.
Tips from RVers
Dump station locations: Plan ahead for waste disposal options. "Park had laundry room, dump station, very clean showers, flush toilets and vault toilets. Verizon 4G 2 bars," notes Annell N. about Michigan Valley.
Pull-through site availability: Some parks offer easier access for larger rigs. "Beautiful area, campfire rings in several locations, and our 43' Rv navigated smoothly (well, husband navigated smoothly!) Easy to drive through, well-maintained roads," reports Brenda Y. about her experience at Osage State Fishing Lake.
Road conditions: Access roads vary in quality around the region. "So glad we chose this dispersed camping location as an overnight stay. It's fantastic! Beautiful area, campfire rings in several locations," adds Brenda Y.
