Both campgrounds offer full hookup sites with water, electric, and sewer connections for RV campers, while also accommodating tent campers with pets. Walnut Grove RV Park provides a designated area for dogs to run around, though it's not a fully fenced dog park. The campground maintains clean facilities with free WiFi and is conveniently located about 10 minutes from downtown Kansas City in a quiet suburban setting. Sites at Walnut Grove are primarily gravel with fire rings and picnic tables, though spaces can be tight, especially in the travelers section. Most sites accommodate both tent and RV camping, though premium pull-through sites at Walnut Grove offer more space than the standard back-in spots. Pets must be supervised at all times, and owners are responsible for waste cleanup. The family-owned Walnut Grove staff are noted for their friendliness and helpfulness with information about local pet-friendly activities.

      Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA

      Ok for a stopover

Stayed one night at the KOA in Oak Grove, just east of Kansas City. The sites were all sunny and since it was 100 degrees, it was hot. But the pool was nice and they had a nice dog park which was ok in the evening after it cooled off. Close to KC so we could drive in for BBQ.

Great Escape RV Park & Campground

      Nice for overnight

Just stopped for one night on our way east. Friendly host checked us in. Nice dog park with bench and shade. All sites are FHU. They offered to move us to a pull thru, but I picked our site based on proximity to the dog park, so I declined the move. We were in site 38, back-in 30 amp. Sites are a bit tight but no one next door so ok. I recommend for a stopover. Less fancy but nicer for dogs imo than Owl Creek which is one exit away. There is a pond for fishing (no license required) and a swimming pool.

      Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA

      Great overnight

Easy access to Interstate and pull through sites were long enough for our truck and 32’ trailer without having to unhitch. Stayed just one night as we passed through. Looked like it would be a good place to stay for multiple nights.

Clean campground. Nice grounds. Two good fenced dog parks.

Only negatives were our hookups were literally in the next site next to their table, and their fire ring was very close to our trailer.

      Weston Bend State Park Campground

      Enjoyable Stay

Getting to the state park off I 29 and through the countryside was easy as the route had Weston Bend SP signage. We followed the SP signs to the campground(CG) where the gate was not manned so we headed to get water, but someone was sitting in the dump station waiting for another person to arrive so we went around this one-loop CG to see if there was a convenient spigot. There are spigots but with a larger rig, you will block the road, and/or you will be on a hill. We went back around and the person moved so we could get water. After that, we headed to pull through site 28 with electric(50/30/20 AMP) only. The site is long but has a 1/4 moon turn so we had to pull back around to get better positioned on the pad so we could disconnect our 39’ 5th wheel and F450 for our 3-night stay. There were tree branches overhead that we could not avoid. RVers next to us in site 30 had just arrived as well and were having trouble getting their travel trailer unhitched and leveled due to the pad’s slight incline and unlevel asphalt. They got their trailer positioned so they could get somewhat level. We got a solid two bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. Due to our proximity to Kansas City, we got a lot of OTA channels. A satellite connection would be iffy in most sites here due to the number of mature trees. The trees in a lot of sites would also scrape the top of larger rigs. There’s a variety of sites with most being good for regular trailers versus tall rigs, and tent sites. They have a nice shower house with 1 washer and 1 dryer both for$1.50. There are also vaulted toilets here and there. There’s a 1.7-acre fenced dog park that includes one large area for large dogs and two other areas with one dedicated to smaller dogs. The dog area is at the front park entrance away from the campground and it would be a long walk to get there, so we drove up. There are a lot of hiking trails here plus an old tobacco barn that’s worth a look.

      Walnut Grove RV Park

      Location = Price

When we began our fulltime journey we stayed at this park for a couple of months and learned a lot about it. The management team was very friendly and would often disclose a lot about what was happening at the park. The park was in need of some improvements but it was clean and nice. The spaces are very tight in the travelers section and more spread out in the long term section. Many sites in the park were occupied by storage and the owners never showed up. To walk your dogs at the little park at night, you had to walk through there area. We called this the storage lot. The out of state contractors often had many loud and drunk guests which was obnoxious. They often harassed females walking their dogs to the park through the narrow street, and they were in the back section.

They had reasonable rates when we first stayed there ($40/night for in the city and $500/month). Now it is much more expensive, one night for our rig is $76 according to their website.

We never felt like it was genuinely part of the RV Community, it was more of a stop through or people were staying in the area for a job or to finish a house. It didn’t house many fulltime RVers that would continue traveling. They love to host NASCAR fans and know they are one of the closest parks to the Speedway.

Ammenities: Laundry Small Store Showers/Restroom Facilities Little dog park on the north end. Occasional BBq They were putting in Google Fiber internet when we stayed there in 2017 so I’m not sure if they completed it. Dump Propane Trash Mail

This location was the closest to our family’s homes so we have stayed there three times all together. There is a lot to do nearby and the main draw of this RV Park is definitely the location. You’re not far from downtown Kansas City, and still in the suburbs of Kansas City.

      Weston Bend State Park Campground

      Great, quite large camp sites

Great please to camp, not to crowded. Got busier on the weekends, empty on the week. Nice showers and toilets, laundry. Campsites were large, many had a good footprint enough to set up a large tent. We have a 20’ round yurt and had plenty of room. Lots of hiking trails in this park, some paved. Nice lookout point. Dog park was nice, well gated and taken care of, had water station for thirsty dogs. We spent 25$ a night for a 30amp electric site. Campground was well maintained. Only minutes from the historic town of Westin, amazing parks, lots of pubs and little restaurants. Nice place to walk around. I would camp here again.

      Kansas City West-Lawrence KOA

Great family campground and awesome dog park!

It’s not the best I’ve ever been to, but it’s a as great family campground with beautiful views. We travel with two adorable rescues and appreciated the awesome dog park where they could run a bit. The restrooms are adequate and clean. Views are beautiful as you will see for yourself. Would definitely return. Tastes are $56-60

    Guide to Leawood

Jackson County offers several campgrounds near Leawood, Kansas, located just 30 minutes from downtown Kansas City. The area's generally flat terrain provides accessible camping options with elevations around 800-1,000 feet above sea level. Seasonal considerations include hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and cold winters that can limit camping opportunities at certain locations without winterized facilities.

    What to do

Lake activities at Blue Springs Lake: Blue Springs Lake Campground offers boating and fishing opportunities, with several campers noting the quality of the lake. As one visitor mentioned, "Beautiful Lake, with fishing, and boating." The recreation area includes multiple water activities within a short drive of campsites.

Historical sites exploration: Fleming Park provides access to historical attractions. According to one camper, "We enjoyed taking time to go to Osage Fort and Missouri Town. Two historical landmarks worth the visit." These sites offer educational opportunities during rainy days when outdoor activities aren't ideal.

Hiking nearby: Lake Jacomo - Fleming Park features multiple hiking trails in the area. A visitor noted, "27 hiking trails, you can kayak, rent a pontoon, lots of sailboats on the lake, fishing. 30 minutes from downtown Kansas City." These trails range from easy to moderate difficulty.

Kansas City sporting events: Stadium RV Park provides a basecamp for sports enthusiasts visiting Kansas City. Though basic in amenities, its location makes it convenient for sporting events at the nearby stadiums, making it a practical overnight option for gameday visits.

    What campers like

Private bathroom facilities: Many campers appreciate the private bathroom setups at Blue Springs Lake Campground. As one reviewer stated, "The bathrooms were incredibly clean and the camp hosts or some of the nicest ones I've ever encountered!" The individual bathroom units provide more privacy than typical campground facilities.

Spacious site layouts: Blue Springs Lake Campground receives consistent praise for site spacing. A camper noted, "The sites were well situated such that you felt you had plenty of privacy." Another mentioned, "The sites are so pretty and spaced well."

Seasonal water quality: Independence's water quality stands out at Campus RV Park, with one camper highlighting, "First off, the water in Independence MO top 10 in the world over time, and in #3 currently." This water quality detail isn't commonly mentioned in campground reviews.

Urban accessibility: The campgrounds provide convenient access to urban amenities while maintaining a camping atmosphere. A visitor at Campus RV Park mentioned it's "Just 30 minutes to downtown Kansas City and maybe 15 minutes to arrowhead stadium, this campground is ideal for being close to everything that Kansas City offers."

    What you should know

Sloped terrain at many sites: Several campgrounds feature uneven terrain requiring leveling equipment. At Blue Springs Lake Campground, a camper observed, "The site slopes to the passenger side and downhill toward the road, so we used a few levelers. Many sites here are sloped." Plan accordingly with proper leveling gear.

Train noise considerations: Campus RV Park experiences periodic train noise. According to visitors, "Only issue was trains blowing their horns during the night" and another noted "occasional train but not often enough to be a nuisance." Consider site selection or bring earplugs if sensitive to nighttime sounds.

Seasonal challenges: For dog friendly campgrounds near Leawood, seasonal considerations include walnut trees at certain locations. One camper at Walnut Grove RV Park shared, "During our stay I was awakened to a startling noise and couldn't figure it out until I went outside and saw the walnuts falling onto our camper. By the time we left, everything was covered(stained) tarnish brown."

Security considerations: Security varies between locations. While some parks feature access codes and gated entries, others have open access. At Stadium RV Park, temporary visitors should note it "appeared that most of the occupants were full time," which changes the camping atmosphere.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: When camping with children at Blue Springs Lake Campground, request sites near play areas. A visitor recommended, "the sites were well kept up, with many prime locations near the playground for our kids." These playgrounds provide entertainment without leaving the campground.

Kid-friendly pool options: Worlds of Fun Village offers water features specifically for families. As one camper described, "The camp ground pool is huge and fun for the kids on non park days. The campground is all paved and perfect for scooters and bikes for the kids."

Spacing considerations: For families needing extra room between sites, Blue Springs Lake Campground offers better spacing than some alternatives. A camper noted, "The sites were far apart enough that you didn't feel like your neighbors were on top of you." This creates a more comfortable environment for families with children.

Wildlife education: The unique wildlife at certain campgrounds provides educational opportunities. At Walnut Grove RV Park, a visitor shared an unexpected discovery: "There also was a strange noise coming from the trees and when I asked the office what it was they thought it was locusts. I knew that was not their noise so I had to find what it was. After searching, I found that it was tree frogs 🐸 and it was their call."

    Tips from RVers

Premium site selection: At Walnut Grove RV Park, experienced RVers recommend upgrading to premium sites for more space. One camper advised, "We did pay for the premium pull through site, so we had more room." Another noted, "Pay more for the pull through you'll have tons of parking even if your rig is big. Our rig is 44 ft and we parked two 2500's on the pad no problem."

Satellite considerations: For RVers requiring satellite service, Blue Springs Campground offers good reception at most sites. A visitor observed, "There are mature trees here, but most sites except a few north perimeter would have a shot for satellite." This helps RVers plan site selection based on connectivity needs.

Internet connectivity: Peculiar Park Place provides reliable internet access, important for working campers. A visitor mentioned, "Our internet worked great through Verizon and ATT, we never tried the park WiFi." At Campus RV Park, another noted specific speeds: "66m down, 24m up. It was so good (and the park is full) I did not bother testing my mobile plans."

Dump station navigation: When departing certain campgrounds, RV positioning matters. At Blue Springs Lake Campground, an RVer advised, "As you exit the park, if you have a big rig, you'll want to stay to the left side of the dump station for a wider right turn out of the park." These specific navigation tips help prevent maneuvering difficulties.
