Campgrounds surrounding Leawood, Kansas provide a variety of camping experiences ranging from urban RV parks to more secluded lakeside settings. The area includes established campgrounds like Walnut Grove RV Park in nearby Merriam, which offers full hookup sites for both tent and RV camping, and Blue Springs Lake Campground in Missouri, approximately 20 miles east of Leawood. Most camping areas within the Kansas City metro region cater primarily to RV travelers, though several locations accommodate tent campers as well. Longview Campground, situated about 15 miles south of Leawood, represents one of the more natural settings with lake access and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Seasonal considerations affect camping availability throughout the region, with most campgrounds operating year-round while others like Worlds of Fun Village only open from March through October. Many sites require advance reservations, particularly during summer weekends and holiday periods when facilities reach capacity. The terrain is generally accessible with paved or gravel roads leading to most established campgrounds, making high-clearance vehicles unnecessary for most visits. Weather patterns typically feature hot, humid summers and cold winters, with spring and fall offering the most moderate camping conditions. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the metropolitan area campgrounds. A camper noted, "Very nice and quiet campground. The shower rooms very clean. Management very friendly."

Proximity to Kansas City amenities remains a primary advantage for camping in this region. Sites at Walnut Grove RV Park receive consistently positive reviews for their convenient location, with one visitor commenting that it's "close to downtown Kansas City, and still in the suburbs." Several campgrounds feature laundry facilities, clean restrooms, and full hookups that appeal to travelers seeking comfort while staying near urban attractions. While some locations like Longview Campground offer more natural surroundings with wildlife viewing opportunities, most camping options prioritize accessibility and convenience over remote wilderness experiences. Noise levels vary by location, with campgrounds closer to highways experiencing more road noise than those situated near lakes or in more residential areas. Water access points at Blue Springs Lake and Lake Jacomo provide opportunities for fishing and boating activities that complement the camping experience.

      Basswood Country RV Resort

      Hidden Gem

I lived near Basswood for 20 plus years and did not know anything about it but where it was. My wife and I decided to live in our camper while we transition homes and I am so pleased with this place. Friendly, easy going, safe.

      Louisburg Middle Creek Lake

      Beautiful and Free

Wonderful free campsites overlooking a lake. There is a boat dock and outhouse. It is primitive and you need to pack your trash out, but it’s beautiful, free, and not far off the highway.

      Woodridge Park

      Not free anymore

Sometime starting g in 2026 this became a day use fee campground. You can still hike but if the car is left overnight "camping" it has to have a reservation paid on recreation.gov for 10 dollars a night. There is a park host so its not like you can sneak it. Unless your dropped off.....

    Guide to Leawood

Camping sites near Leawood, Kansas range from county-operated campgrounds with concrete pads to privately-owned RV parks with full amenities. Most facilities operate seasonally with the prime camping season running from April through October when temperatures average 75-85°F during summer days. The terrain throughout the region consists primarily of rolling hills with elevations between 800-1,000 feet, creating varied drainage patterns that affect site selection during rainy periods.

    What to do

Fishing access points: Blue Springs Lake Campground offers multiple fishing opportunities near camping areas. "Beautiful Lake, with fishing, and boating," notes reviewer Shirley M., who appreciated the recreational options despite rainy weather during her stay.

Historical attractions: Within short driving distance of Jackson County Fleming Park Jacomo Campground, visitors can explore regional history. "We enjoyed taking time to go to Osage Fort and Missouri town. Two historical landmarks worth the visit," shares Shirley M., highlighting activities beyond standard lake recreation.

Playground facilities: Some campgrounds cater specifically to families with children. At Blue Springs Lake Campground, Chris W. found "many prime locations near the playground for our kids" and noted that "campground staff were beyond friendly and accommodating."

    What campers like

Site spacing: Many reviewers mention appreciation for campgrounds that provide adequate space between sites. At Blue Springs Lake Campground, NomadBrad D. observed that "the sites were far apart enough that you didn't feel like your neighbors were on top of you" - a contrast to more cramped facilities in the region.

Bathroom facilities: Clean restrooms rank high on camper priorities. "The bathroom/showers were clean. The laundry worked well," reports Pam R. about Blue Springs Lake Campground, which she called "the best campground we stayed at on our cross country trip."

Concrete pads: Level camping surfaces make a significant difference, especially during wet weather. At Blue Springs Lake Campground MO, Phil M. simply noted the practical advantages: "Very nice. Concrete pads. Full hookups."

    What you should know

Site drainage issues: Some campgrounds in the region have topography that affects water runoff. At Lake Jacomo - Fleming Park, Amanda M. warns that "several of the sites are at the bottom of a hill which get water logged when it rains. Call ahead and make sure you aren't in one of those sites."

Road noise variations: Proximity to highways affects sound levels. Jessica C. mentions about Blue Springs Lake Campground: "there was some road noise from morning commuters but overall it's a nice stop for a night or two."

Security features: Some campgrounds implement security measures. "We felt very safe here since they require an access code to get into the gate," notes Jessica C. about Blue Springs Lake Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Cabin accommodations: For families not equipped with RVs or tents, Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA offers alternative housing. "Our friends stayed in the cabins which are awesome," reports Ashley S., though she cautions that "the RV sites were right on top of each other."

Recreational facilities: Some campgrounds offer activities beyond standard camping. At Worlds of Fun Village, Jennifer H. shares that "the campground pool is huge and fun for the kids on non-park days. The campground is all paved and perfect for scooters and bikes for the kids."

Weather planning: Regional weather patterns affect family camping experiences. For Blue Springs Lake Campground, Chris W. mentions the "lack of big trees for shade through part of the park," suggesting strategic site selection for summer visits.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Be prepared for uneven terrain at some locations. MickandKarla W. report about Blue Springs Campground: "The site slopes to the passenger side and downhill toward the road, so we used a few levelers. Many sites here are sloped."

Navigational considerations: Access roads can present challenges for larger rigs. MickandKarla W. advise: "As you exit the park, if you have a big rig, you'll want to stay to the left side of the dump station for a wider right turn out of the park."

Amenities for extended stays: For longer visits, infrastructure becomes more important. At Peculiar Park Place, Dan & Penny F. recommend it "if you are looking for a staging area just south of the KC area with full hookups, level sites and amazing owners," noting it "accepts cash or check for payments, propane sold on site."
