Pulpit Rock Campground in Decorah provides full hookup RV sites with 30/50 amp service from April through November. The campground features big-rig friendly spaces with gravel pads, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. Just north of Decorah, Bluffton Resort offers electric hookups with 30 amp service, though it lacks sewer connections and isn't suitable for larger motorhomes. Skip-A-Way Resort in nearby Clermont accommodates large RVs with full hookup sites including 50 amp electrical service. Chimney Rock Canoe and Campground in Cresco, about 15 miles from Decorah, provides water and electric hookups for RVs but no sewer connections. "We had a tight fit with our travel trailer on site 33e, but once we squeezed in it was excellent," noted one RV camper about their experience at a local park.

Most RV parks in the Decorah area operate seasonally, typically closing between mid-October and early November before reopening in April. Dump stations are available at all major campgrounds, though their quality varies significantly. One traveler mentioned that a nearby campground's dump station was "just a hole in a manhole cover... in a dirt/weedy area and smells terrible." Cell service can be inconsistent throughout the region, with Verizon generally providing better coverage than T-Mobile. Pettibone Resort, located about 45 miles northeast in La Crosse, Wisconsin, offers an alternative with full hookup sites and reliable internet access. Pet-friendly policies are standard across most RV parks near Decorah, with designated areas for dog walking. Advance reservations are strongly recommended during summer weekends and fall foliage season when occupancy rates peak.

      Pikes Peak State Park Campground

      Beautiful Campground & Views

FYI When we made reservations this site required a two- night minimum stay. Don't know if that is for all seasons. Nice pull-through, large enough for our 36' 5th Wheel and pickup tow vehicle, needed more leveling than some. Some sites have power and water, ours only power. There's a water pipe and dump station on the way out. Nice hiking trails, including to a beautiful river overlook.

      Pikes Peak State Park Campground

      Gorgeous park, small campground

There are about 30 electric site big enough for RVs, and about 35 non electric site. All are very nice sites with fairly level gravel pads. There are lots of trees for shade making the sites really beautiful if not spacious. We had a tight fit with our travel trailer on site 33e, but once we squeezed in it was excellent. Two bathrooms one with showers, and well kept. The best thing about this park are the wonderful hiking trails. Some are ADA accessible near the camp store, but most are a good climb with lots of ups and downs. Town of McGregor has a few cute restaurants and bars, but enjoy the park and the amazing views of the Mississippi and the Wisconsin rivers. Several big rig RVs were there, but call ahead if you’ve got a big RV to make sure you’ll fit.

There are some fantastic cycling routes near the river, with stops in all the little towns along the way. A wonderful place to spend a weekend, with apple orchards nearby.

      Eagle Cliff Campground and Lodging

      River Camping

Overall great experience! Located on the Root River. Cliff View has very clean bath houses. Lots of sites to choose from. 50 amp service, sewer hook up and of course water. If your close enough to the office wifi available. Some sites are tight for large motor homes, 5th wheelers and tavel trailer. If your a bicyclist, campgrounds on great paved trail. They like their grass, no rugs or carpet on the grass. I take this as a positive. Dogs n cats are welcome. Lots of seasonal sites. Camping during the week is quite!

      Pettibone Resort

Nice park on Miss River in LaCrosse

Pettibone is a nice park on an island in the Mississippi River in LaCrosse. Being from Louisiana it was cool to camp right beside the Mississippi River since we have levees between us and the river. We stayed one night on our way to Minnesota. There is plenty of shade. The park streets are asphalt with two concrete strips for your tires in the sites. The park was quiet except when someone decided to shoot fireworks between 10-11 pm. A little pricey at$54 considering there were no sewer hookups.

Stayed in pull-through campsite#308 which was shady. It was a grass site with two concrete strips for my TT tires. There was more than enough parking for my TT and truck and grass on either side. The site included: picnic table on a concrete pad. Utilities were located in the rear. 20A/30A electric and water. Site was a little unlevel. Neighbors are close.

AT&T had 2-3 bars of LTE and Verizon 1 bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 146 Mbps down, 4.8 Mbps up. Verizon Speedtest: 016 Mbps down, 0.14 Mbps up. Free WiFi.

Would stay here again. We camped at Pettibone Resort in a Travel Trailer.

      Maple Springs Campground

      Eden

We stayed here for the month of august, and this place is awesome! Beautiful spaces of various size, a river runs next to it and they have duck races. Dog park, small general store, backs up to a national park, close to town, immaculately maintained, volley ball court, lots of shade trees, easy access, and Andy(owner/operator) is the nicest person you’ll ever want to meet. For those so inclined there’s church service on Sunday in an old (cool looking!) barn! Fire pits at every spot. There is WiFi there, but little to no phone service unless you have a cell booster. 5/5 will definitely be back!

      North Cedar Park

      Great Quick-Stop Option

We were traveling northbound on 218 on a Tuesday and searched for a convenient stop for one night. It was very hot so filtered the results, showing spots with electric hook-up in order to run the AC a bit. The North Cedar County Park was easy to find, located just a couple miles off the exit and past the town of Plainfield.

The park is heavily shaded in most areas. They have done a good job of keeping the tree canopy high, so we had no worries of hitting limbs in our 34' class A that has a height of 12 feet.

The sites are all grass, with no clear definition of individual sites. We just picked a spot that looked fairly level and dry. Soft soil could be a concern for heavier rigs after rains. Our stabilizers did sink into the dirt a bit, but we were able to level.

They have wooden picnic tables scattered, as well as designated firepit areas. 30 and 15 Amp service was available on the power post. There is a bathroom/shower house, picnic shelter, playground and horseshoe courts.

The campground is right on a wide, fast moving river and offers 2 boat launches. It didnt appear that any of the sites had a water view, but it was a short, pleasant stroll to the rivers edge.

We paid $20 for our one night. It is all first come, first served. They say on their website that they have 40 sites. On a Tuesday in June, there were 3 of us there for the night (the other two looked more long-term). A posted sign said that camping is free on Wednesday nights, so that's cool!

Overall, it was a quiet and pretty place to stop and we would definately visit again.

      Oelwein City Park

This is a beautiful city park campground

I enjoyed my 5 night stay at Oelwein City Park Campground. It's located on the south end of town, there is only one business within walking distance. It's a great restaurant (Oelwein Family Restaurant) and it's about a 15 minute walk.

There is one shower house, and several vault toilets throughout the park. The shower house is old and a little run down but was very clean. I had no problems using it.

The city park is adjacent to the campground and has picnic shelters, a playground, and a dog park.

There are electric and water hookups at most sites, and there is a dump station. The park was pretty full on the weekend as you would expect, but very quiet during the week.

I had great Verizon and T-mobile service here.

      Goose Island

Can’t miss County camping on the Mississippi

This camp South of Lacrosse Wisconsin is a great family or road tripping camp. Goose Island has very friendly staff and a nice little camp supply store at the entrance where you can also purchase firewood in two sizes of tubes. You’ll need a way to haul the wood to your site. We tent camp so we choose nonpowered sites away from the RV’s. The website refers to the camp as being on the backwater of the Misssippi. What ever it is, it is beautiful and right on the water. Bring the bug spray for the evening becasue the mosquitoes do come out in force. The camp facilities are clean and convenient. There is a small children’s playground and a small swimming area also. The camp was relatively busy in the powered RV area but clean and quite thoughout. It looked like there were some long term RV campers by the looks of their set up. You won’t regret staying at Goose Island.

    Guide to Decorah

Camping near Decorah, Iowa centers around the Upper Iowa River with its 80-foot limestone bluffs and clear water trout streams. The region's campgrounds operate primarily from April through October, with some closing in mid-October due to northeastern Iowa's cold winters. Most sites near Decorah sit in valleys between bluffs, creating distinct microclimates where morning fog is common during summer months.

    What to do

Kayaking and tubing on the Upper Iowa River: Chimney Rock Canoe and Campground provides shuttle service for river adventures. "Easy access for kayaking and tubing on the Upper Iowa River," notes Jenny K., while another visitor mentioned, "Between the campground and the nearby towns, there is easily two weeks of activities to do."

Cycling on the Trout Run Trail: The paved trail loop near Pulpit Rock Campground offers scenic riding opportunities. "We rode the entire Trout Run Trail and loved it and visited Pulpit Rock Brewery, Toppling Goliath and the Vesterheim," shares Mallory S. The trail provides quick access to Decorah's breweries and attractions.

Trout fishing in cold streams: Regional waterways support healthy trout populations. At Beaver Creek Valley State Park, located 32 miles from Decorah, "An easy way to trout fish and enjoy the park," according to Bruce C. The cold, clear waters throughout the region make fishing accessible even for beginners.

    What campers like

Riverside camping spots: Bluffton Resort offers campsites next to dramatic limestone formations. "Try to get a site closest to the bluff for the best experience!" recommends Ryan. The proximity to geological features creates unique camping environments.

Swimming opportunities: Several campgrounds feature water access beyond the river. At Upper Iowa Resort and Rental, "The pool is refreshing, campground is clean and inviting," reports Marcy F. Another visitor added, "Has a 'pool'/man made pond with a beach all the way around it."

Wooded privacy: Many campsites offer natural separation between sites. "The sites were spread out enough that it really felt like I was at a dispersed spot at times," writes one camper about Beaver Creek Valley State Park. This creates quieter camping experiences, particularly during weekdays.

    What you should know

Limited cell service: Many campgrounds sit in valleys with poor connectivity. "There is no cell reception at this park (TMobile)," notes a camper at Beaver Creek Valley State Park. Most locations report Verizon providing better coverage than other carriers.

River water levels: The Upper Iowa River depth varies seasonally. "This campground is perfectly situated on the Upper Iowa River," writes a visitor to Upper Iowa Resort, but water levels can affect paddling conditions, particularly in late summer.

Campground personality differences: Skip-A-Way Resort operates from April 15 through October 15 with a family focus. "This campground has a lot of fun activities from April 15 thru Oct 15," explains Lourene M., while another camper noted, "Lots of things for kids to do!"

    Tips for camping with families

Recreation facilities: Skip-A-Way Resort includes numerous child-friendly amenities. "Some weekly activities include canoeing, tubing down the Turkey River, swimming, fishing and paddle boats in the Lake, a splash pad for kids," reports a visitor. The campground also features "a playground for little kids, and a mini horse for petting."

Movie nights: Organized activities keep children entertained. At Skip-A-Way Resort, they have "a pavilion for use any time where they also have children's movies every Saturday night during season," according to one reviewer.

Booking timing: Summer weekends fill quickly at popular campgrounds. Chimney Rock Campground can get busy, with one reviewer noting, "The weekends are a bit more lively, but with friendly folks." Reservations several weeks in advance are recommended for prime summer dates.

    Tips from RVers

Site sizing considerations: RV lengths matter when selecting campsites in this region. At Peterson City RV Park, "The sites are very close together, but there is room in the grass behind the sites to hang out," according to Amy E. She added, "The RV sites have electricity, water, and sewer, and they are level—we were only staying one night and didn't even need to unhook our pickup."

Hookup variations: Electric service differs between campgrounds. At Bluffton Resort, sites feature "electric hookups with 30 amp service" but no sewer connections, making stays of 3-4 days more practical for larger RVs with limited holding tank capacity.

Seasonal operation: Most RV campgrounds near Decorah close for winter. Upper Iowa Resort and Rental operates from "Apr 15 - Oct 15," while Pulpit Rock Campground runs from "April 1 to November 1," requiring advance planning for early spring or late fall camping trips.
