Henry's Lake BLM Dispersed Camping provides free pet-friendly sites with fire rings near West Yellowstone, approximately 30 minutes from the national park's west entrance. Dogs are permitted throughout the camping area with standard leash requirements. Several campers report easy access to walking paths around the lake where pets can exercise, though the area lacks designated pet waste stations. Targhee Creek offers similar dispersed camping options for pet owners, maintaining a pet-friendly environment with ample space for dogs to explore. Beautiful views and proximity to wildlife viewing opportunities make this location popular with pet owners. Sites accommodate both tents and RVs with no reservation requirements, though the gravel access roads can become rough in sections.

The lakeside locations provide excellent opportunities for pets to cool off during summer months, with Henry's Lake offering convenient water access for dogs. Moose sightings are common near the creek areas, necessitating proper pet control to avoid wildlife confrontations. Though the dispersed camping areas lack formal amenities, nearby Henry's Lake State Park Campground offers more developed pet-friendly options with water and electric hookups for those seeking additional conveniences. Local campers recommend bringing extra water for pets as summer temperatures can rise significantly during daytime hours. The open meadow areas provide ample space for dog exercise, though campers should be prepared for potentially muddy conditions after rainfall when accessing sites closer to water sources.

      Big Springs Campground

Nice Woodsy Campground. Fun to Explore. Nearish to Yellowstone.

After a random restaurant stop, a local recommended we go check out big springs campground, which is the headwaters of the snake river and not too far outside of Yellowstone. I am so glad we did! After traveling over random dirt roads from Spencer, Idaho, we arrived to find several open spots for just $15 each. Nice and woodsy, pleasant neighbors, and sites are just big enough. There's bear boxes to use. Just a quick walk away is the headwaters of the snake river, where huge trout swim under a bridge and eat marshmallows and American cheese. Only downside is no showers or flush toilets. Close enough to Yellowstone that we slept in the car so we could wake up at 5 am and grab one of the early morning Yellowstone camp sites. Would definitely go back.

Red Rock RV Park by Open Road Resorts

      Not worth the money...stay elsewhere

Booked 6 months in advance and based it on many good reviews. Was promised a new, upgraded campground with a premium site. Found new section is not completed and under construction. Was placed on site 40, which is terribly unlevel, a muddy mess with no crush, no patio and a tree that lays disgusting bushy bug-like buds every day all over everything. The only site like this. We could not enjoy it outside at all. No dog park as advertised. Paid a good deal for a week and was very disappointed. It was far from all the attractions at Yellowstone. It takes 30 min to get to the west gate, and over an hour and half to any points in the park. People seemed nice enough. Did see a moose close by and the laundry room and store were nice. The store was way overpriced tho. West Yellowstone seemed much nicer and closer to NP. Wouldn't stay here again. So disappointed that we booked a week here. The site was horrible and I was told it was a nice site when I questioned it by staff.

      Sugar City RV Park

      Sugar City RV

Very nice "state of the art" RV Park. Clean showers, nice clothes wash facilities, dog friendly with fenced run area, cat approved by "Liza", just in her trailer trash tabby space. Great access to Tetons and Yellowstone, good shopping overall in Sugar City and nearby Rexburg. But ! It's not boondocking or cheap, so we'll live with it for our Yellowstone and Teton visit

      Pristine, Safe, Secluded, and Windy

Location is stunning, off the main road, and feels safe. Additionally it is stunning! The lake is incredible, however it was VERY windy while we were there. Beautiful views and safe setting for kids and pets. Would absolutely stay here again!!!

Red Rock RV Park by Open Road Resorts

      Great Views

We were here to attend the 2023 Lippert Getaway and the staff did an amazing job making sure the park looked it's very best. As we had been here before, the campground (CG) was easy to find, but some people did say that their RV GPS wanted to take them down a dirt road on the other side of Henry Lake. Campers coming to Red Rock RV Park should come in on US-20 to Red Rock Pass Road. Check-in was very thorough, and we were escorted to premium pull-through site 69. Our daily rate reflects Lippert’s special RV rally rate plus two extra days at the full rate averaged out. We stayed here in September 2019, and now, under new ownership, the CG has doubled in sites and added a nice-sized fenced dog park, plus a second laundry and bathroom facility. The water here is very good pressure-wise, and we didn’t need to use our softener. The sites are pretty close together, so try to get an end site to have more yard area. The section we stayed in did not have mature trees, so using the satellite was no problem. The original section, sites 1-54, has many mature trees, so using satellite would be iffy. We got two bars on Verizon, and their WiFi was okay. The CG is about 30 minutes from Yellowstone’s west gate. We did get double charged for a propane tank fill and didn't catch it until after we had departed. I reached out via email with the proof of the double charge and they immediately credited my card. This is a very nice park with awesome views, but their normal rates are really over-priced in our opinion.

      Grand View Campground (Targhee NF)

      Hidden Gem!

I’ve lived in Idaho Falls almost my whole life and visited Ashton and Island Park countless times and had no idea this was here! I lucked into a first come spot because someone had cancelled their online reservation and was able to stay two nights here. Dog friendly, zero cell service like at all.

I got spot 4, right next to the delightful camp hosts! Electricity at each camp site, two double sites, all the trees you could ever want! A very very quiet and peaceful campground. 10/10. Will be back.

It’s steps away from Lower Mesa Falls! Not far from Ashton if you forget something and close enough to West Yellowstone if you want to stay somewhere further from the park!

      Henrys Lake State Park Campground

Amazing Views & Great Yellowstone Base

This campground is situation on Henrys Lake and provides amazing views from the campground. There are trails to explore without going too far. The park is ~20 minutes from the West Yellowstone entry, but nestled away from the hustle of the tourist town. Clean shower house. Super friendly staff/hosts/rangers.

      My only negative is it’s $71 a night if you’re a non-Idaho resident.

Overall we’d stay here again hands down!

      Box Canyon Campground

      Quiet gem nestled amongst nature

This was an unexpectedly nice place. The long drive down the dirt road brings you away from the highway and close to the river. Even at 5 pm there were open sites. A couple sites are double sites and priced accordingly.

There is a gravel pad for parking, tent and picnic table. Surrounding that is forest and flowers. These obstruct direct view of the neighbors on one side and minimize viewing the others. 2 vault toilet locations with numbered water faucets.

Suggestion: site 9 has the restroom light shiny into it. We were fine because our teardrop had no windows in that direction.

My dog and I headed out on the short path from the campground (it leaves from one of the campsites). It joins the Box Canyon Trail and you have a choice of two directions. We went left and found a long but easy hike giving views of the river and even a waterfall. People could be seen fishing and also rafting/tubing down the river. There are other national forest campgrounds in the area with a variety of activities. This is a place to visit!

      Grand View Campground (Targhee NF)

Small Idaho gem near the Tetons

This campground and the adjacent Falls were recommended to me by a local, and what a find! The campground was very small(9 sites, I think), quiet, and beautiful. The outhouse and campsites were extremely clean. All sites had electric hookup available; camping fees were $30 with hookup and $15 without. The campground is located on Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, near Ashton, Idaho, and is a short walk to The lower Falls. I will definitely return to camp at this tiny gem.

    What to Do

Fishing opportunities: Henry's Lake offers excellent fishing for cutthroat and brook trout. "Right on beautiful Henry's Lake. Room for 6-12. Stated here for several days in a 40' motorhome," notes a visitor to Henry's Lake BLM Dispersed.

Creek exploration: The numerous creeks in the area provide cooling relief during summer months. At Targhee Creek, campers report: "The water this time of year is too high and too cold for us to swim/wade in but our dogs love it! Plenty of space to spread out and enjoy a private camping experience!"

Wildlife viewing: Early mornings and evenings offer prime wildlife watching times. At Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, visitors have observed "Trumper Swans, elk, deer, Pronghorn Antelope, grizzly bear, moose and hundreds of waterfowl."

    What Campers Like

Road conditions: Access routes vary widely in quality. For Targhee Creek, a visitor cautions: "The road is very rough with many potholes though. If the weather is good it would be a great place to be! We went while it was raining…would not recommend. It was incredibly muddy and had lots of standing water."

    Tips for Camping with Families

Campsite selection: Choose sites with natural features that entertain children. At Stoddard Creek, "We had a great time although the water as turned off because it was mid october and the water needs to be turned off before it freezes.
