    Island Park, Idaho

High in the Caribou–Targhee National Forest, 90 miles northeast of Idaho Falls, Henrys Lake is a stone’s throw from the Continental Divide and the western boundary of Yellowstone National Park. Situated in a wide, flat basin, and surrounded by 10,000-foot peaks, this shallow alpine lake is as popular with migrating birds as it is with local sport fishers. The small state park at Henrys Lake is a great spot for spending a few days fishing, lounging and wildlife watching, or for exploring some of the area’s other attractions, including Yellowstone, Harriman State Park, Mesa Falls, and various hiking, horseback, and ATV trails.

Campers visiting Henrys Lake State Park will find more than 80 tent and RV sites situated near the lake’s eastern shore. Sites are equipped with electrical and water hookups, picnic tables, and fire pits with cooking grills. Some sites are ADA accessible. Campground amenities include flush restrooms, showers, picnic areas. A dump station is located onsite. The park also has a few camping cabins for rent. Dogs are permitted in the park, but must remain leashed. Camping is available from mid-May through mid-October. Sites are $20–$31/night; cabins are $50–$55/night; reservations are accepted.

For fishing on the lake, the park has a boat ramp and fish cleaning station. Yellowstone cutthroat is the most common at Henrys Lake, but there is also a significant number of cutthroat-rainbow (cut-bow) hybrids. Paddlers can launch from the beach area; kayak rentals are available. Wildlife watching from the park’s 3 miles of hiking and biking trails—as well as the lake’s shoreline–can be exceptional. Besides the prolific number of migrating birds, including waterfowl, eagles and hawks, there are frequent sightings of deer, moose, and antelope. The park also hosts seasonal nature programs.

    BLM Skull Canyon Road Dispersed

    Dispersed Camping in a Canyon

Coordinartes: 44.16547,-112.90392. Beautiful views. Large dirt and gravel site, right along side to Skull Canyon Road, about a mile from ID Hwy 28. Canyon walls on each side. Rough narrow rocky track to the site from the highway; recommend high clearance. High humps on this track. Small rock fire ring. Grass and sagebrush all around site. Some leveling may be required. Tent camping possible. Very peaceful; can hardly hear road noise from highway. The only vehicle that drove by was a national forest truck. No cell service. There are several boondocking sites, some with vault toilets nearby, along Hwy 28 in the Birch Creek Recreation Area.

    Stoddard Creek Campground

Beautiful stop on way to Montana

FS type campground in N ID just off I-15. Campsites at the top of the campground are best. Loop A (we were in A05) faces a road with lots of dry camp and UTV traffic. Also only 1 vault toilet in that loop, while upper has a 2 stall vault toilet. Nice level sites, mainly shady sites. Bear cans. Walking up road we had access to a number of trails some of which are for UTVs but were not busy while we were there. LOTS of RV groups up the road.

    Beautiful open space

This is a beautiful spot. A little difficult to find. The road leading down to the lake looks like it’s someone’s driveway adjacent. I drove by it a few times before actually finding it. Once I got there though definitely worth it. It looks like a gravel parking lot. There were 2 small RVs already there when I got there; and a truck had pulled in sometime overnight when I woke up. The lake is gorgeous. It’s quiet and dark and very peaceful!!

Nice place with cell service close to West Yellowstone

I enjoyed boondocking here in my tent. I had good cell service with Google FI wireless. Also I was able to get by the road and make it in my Honda Accord. Nice place even had a bear box for food storage.

    Warm Slough

Tricky to Find but Worth It

This place was hard to find - I almost gave up. The GPS directions and coordinates on this app are both wrong. Take Warm Slough Rd off 4000 N. Ignore the no trespassing signs- they refer to the land on either side of the road. You can also search "Warm Slough Campground" in google maps. There is a smaller campground at the end of the road, and a larger one with pit toilets if you hang a right at the brown sign with the various camping rules.

Lots of options with fire rings and tables. Really nice and peaceful once you find it :-)

GPS for my spot: 43.8731862, -111.8663080

    So worth it !!

This camp was so beautiful. It’s nestled right on the lake and the sunset is just stunning. The bathrooms were so clean and there was even a mural painted on the walls. There are several places to camp along the red rocks pass road if you don’t want to drive all the way down to the lake. The lake sites are so beautiful that if you opt out you’re definitely going to miss out.

    Bootjack Dr.

A good amount of dispersed areas here. All the areas in the open meadow area closer by the road was occupied. We choose a dead end road and had the area all to ourselves. Had to back up the road about 200 feet because there was no turn around for the size of our rig (36 foot 5th wheel). But it is doable.

A lot of boondocking opportunities in that area. Must of the spots in the open meadow area were full. Therefore, we went with this spot up a dead end road. With the size of r rig 36 foot Solltude I had to back up the road about 200 feet. Road in was a little rough but we managed.

Great spot off the beaten path

Great spot down by river. Mostly sunny area but found this spot with shade. Rough rd coming in but camper van accessible. Rock fire ring. There are houses across river but this site is private from that . Only bad thing is it’s quite a little drive back here. At 2pm on a Sunday no one around so far.

Some noise from the road close by but not an issue. Please be respectfull of wild life in the area (there are fish and small frogs in the creek). Please dont disturb them, dont get in the creek

    Henry Flats Dispersed Spot

One of my favorites free camping spots

I highly recommend staying here if you’re around Yellowstone National Park. I’ve been on a 2 month road trip around the West and this has been one of my favorite dispersed camping sites. I planned on just crashing here for a night but ended up staying for a couple days because of how beautiful this spot is. If you go, drive all the way down the gravel road and there is a nice place for people to camp out right at the level of the lake. It’s clean and a good place for families to camp out!

    Hidden Gem!

I’ve lived in Idaho Falls almost my whole life and visited Ashton and Island Park countless times and had no idea this was here! I lucked into a first come spot because someone had cancelled their online reservation and was able to stay two nights here. Dog friendly, zero cell service like at all.

I got spot 4, right next to the delightful camp hosts! Electricity at each camp site, two double sites, all the trees you could ever want! A very very quiet and peaceful campground. 10/10. Will be back.

It’s steps away from Lower Mesa Falls! Not far from Ashton if you forget something and close enough to West Yellowstone if you want to stay somewhere further from the park!

Really enjoyed the stay. Really nice shower are. Nice electric hook-ups at the rv sites. Only some sites have septic, and unfortunately, the dump station was down during our visit, but we got to hear stories from a native American. It was truly an amazing stay. We also enjoyed bird watching and kayaking. Of course, our main point of the visit was Yellowstone not very far away. ( gas and other stuff is cheaper in Montana)

    Very good, one tiny issue

Wonderful spot. Forested & shady, but with some meadows too. Several trails for ATVs & hiking. Rather warm, but not bad for July.

  • Wildlife viewing: The Upper Lake Campground is perfect for spotting wildlife. One reviewer said, “What a treat to drive through Centennial Valley and get to camp in this great spot. Views all around and to wake up to a Trumpeter Swan swimming right off our campsite was awesome.”

What campers like:

  • Clean facilities: Campers appreciate the cleanliness of the sites. A review for Riverside Campground noted, “This is a beautiful campground, it's next to the river, lots of trees and everything is green. I'd go back again.”
  • Spacious sites: Many campgrounds, like Buffalo Campground, offer roomy spots. One camper mentioned, “Our spot was very spacious and had some cover from the Aspen and Pine trees.”
  • Quiet atmosphere: Campers enjoy the peacefulness of places like Egin Lakes. A visitor remarked, “Beautiful campground just off of I-15. Campground was very quiet and surprisingly green for August.”

What you should know:

  • Limited amenities: Some campgrounds, like Warm Slough, have basic facilities. A camper noted, “There are 2 pit toilets. The one at the front is truly disgusting. The one further in by the boat launch is clean, but no TP.”
  • Road conditions: Accessing some campgrounds can be tricky. One reviewer for Targhee Creek mentioned, “The road was a bit rough but we were able to find a spot along it each night.”
  • Mosquitoes: Be prepared for bugs, especially in the summer. A camper at Henrys Lake BLM Dispersed said, “The lake was swarming with non-biting midges. They were quite literally everywhere.”

Tips for camping with families:

  • Choose spacious sites: Look for campgrounds with larger sites, like Redrock RV Park. One family shared, “The sites are pretty close together, so try to get an end site to have more yard area.”
  • Plan for activities: Bring fishing gear or kayaks, especially if you're near lakes. A visitor at Henrys Lake State Park Campground mentioned, “Wish we had more time to spend here but had a wonderful evening with the views and space.”
  • Pack bug spray: With the presence of mosquitoes, it’s wise to have repellent on hand. A camper at Targhee National Forest Warm River Campground advised, “Definitely coming back. Oh and don’t forget that mosquito repellent!”

Tips from RVers:

  • Check for hookups: Some campgrounds, like Buffalo Campground, have electric hookups, while others do not. A reviewer noted, “Some sites have electrical hookups. Ours didn't but the weather was perfect and we didn't need AC at all.”
  • Be mindful of noise: Campgrounds can get noisy, especially during peak times. One camper at Targhee National Forest Warm River Campground said, “We also had a bad run (three days) of loud neighbors that made it unbearable.”
  • Plan your route: Some GPS systems may lead you astray. A visitor at Warm Slough advised, “Pro tip: don’t try to find this location using Apple Maps. Google Maps will take you straight to the actual site.”

Camping near Spencer, Idaho, has something for everyone, from families to RV enthusiasts. Just be prepared for the unique quirks of each campground!
