Best Dog-Friendly Camping in Georgia

With 63 state parks and historic sites, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic sea islands, more and more adventurers are picking Georgia for their outdoor expeditions. Anchored by the mass metropolis of Atlanta on the north end, and graced by the Southern charm of Savannah in the south, Georgia offers plenty of adventure in between, with some of the highest peaks, prettiest waterfalls, and the best shelling in the South. Grab your tent, your best broken-in boots, or the car-camping accoutrements – camping in Georgia is waiting for you!

The Chattahoochee Forest is a popular camping destination, but it can be hard to escape the hustle and bustle, especially at the Chattooga and Blue Ridge recreation areas. Luckily Three Forks Campground at the Appalachian Trail offers an escape from the hubbub of more popular sites. Enjoy multiple waterfalls, trout streams, and gnarled trees, all in an old-growth forest. There’s also access to several trails – the perfect home base to get some serious day hiking done.

Enamored by all of your options for camping in Georgia? We are too! With its stunning biodiversity (home to the greatest concentration of salamander species in the world), lush forests, and verdant bottomlands, it’s well-worth a trip. For a great taste of the beauty, try the Bear Creek Trail, with its adjacent campground. Winding through a beautiful stream valley, this trek takes you past the second-largest tree in Georgia, burbling waterfalls, and plenty of wildflowers for your 5.7 mile round-trip hike.

But if you’re looking for something different than the Chattahoochee area, check out the Silver Comet Trail, a short jaunt north of Atlanta – perfect for weekend warriors eager to get out into nature. Free and paved, at just over 61 miles long, the Silver Comet trail is built on abandoned rail lines. The path winds through residential areas and forests alike, where you’ll find everything from tunnels to trestles, bike rental shops to wheelchair access points. Find camping in Georgia along the way and get as close to the natural beauty as possible.

Whichever route you choose - mountains or flatlands, waterfalls or sea - you can be sure to find some of the best camping in Georgia off the beaten trail with The Dyrt!

    Fort Mountain State Park Campground

    Great Campground

We love camping at Fort Mountain. Its usually a good bit cooler due to the elevation, and the private wooded campsites make tent camping in Georgia’s summer heat much more enjoyable. Good hiking and things to do nearby.

    Coastal GA RV Resort

    Nice, clean

Friendly staff. Easy check in. Very clean park. Sites aren’t really big, but are separated by bushes, trees so provides some privacy. They are very pet friendly. We travel with a dog and they have a dog park. It’s not big (for larger dogs) and it would be nicer with a different surface (stone or chips) as it had really muddy areas. And of course there are always those pet owners who don’t bother to pick up there dog’s poop. So not the fault of the campground. Another camper told me they are adding a doggie grooming daycare facility. Which would be great to be able to leave your dog for the day while site seeing . Restrooms very clean. Nice showers. Doors locked and keyed with code. ice machine (free!) Didn’t use the laundry room but poked my head in and it was clean, all top loading washers. Great area to walk (like a boardwalk) around the pond. Close to stores, islands, restaurants. We would stop again for a few nights if traveling thru that area again. Restful and felt safe.

    Pine Mountain Camp Ground

Well maintained roads. Large sites with choice of full sun or shade site.

Staff is great and his campground allows campfires. Pet friendly with two dog parks. Great pool and has cabins and yurts to reserve. Less than three miles from Callaway Gardens and FDR Park. Town of Pine Mountain...two street lights...very quaint sidewalk shops! This place is a hidden treasure.

    Hawkins Pointe RV Park

    Close to highway

Close to everything. Racing just down the street. That’s a positive or negative. On the nights they are racing you hear I’m the cars at the track. There are no amenities but they do have a fenced dog park. The sites aren’t bad there’s just no shrubs or trees or anything. It’s just really good gravel and some grass and a picnic table. The people in the office are really nice and helpful. If you need work on your rig, there are lots of places real close by as well as camping world.

    Battlefield Campground & RV Park

    Convenient and functional

Battlefield Campground & RV park is locates right off the exit in Ringgold, Ga, right behind the Georgia Winery, so it is very close to Chattanooga. The campground seems to have a lot of long term guests, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you are looking for a relaxing retreat to the woods. The sites are very close to each other, and most of them were full when we stayed. We were on site #69, right across from the pool. The Campground does have some nice amenities like the pool, and playground, dog park, and the pavilion, which I’m not sure what this space is used for, but it was nicely furnished and could be used to host a party or something. The restrooms were exceptionally clean! The bathhouse located in the pavilion was very nice. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating. The location was convenient for us to get back and forth from Chattanooga, but I would only return out of necessity, as I prefer to be a little more secluded when I’m camping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best dog-friendly campgrounds in Georgia?

Georgia offers several exceptional dog-friendly campgrounds. River's End Campground & RV Park stands out with its adjacent dog park and proximity to Tybee Island beaches. Savannah South KOA welcomes pets with a dedicated dog park and requires pets to be leashed at all times. Many campers also appreciate Fort Mountain State Park for its wooded, private sites that provide shade for pets during hot Georgia summers. For a unique experience, Stone Mountain Park Campground offers pet-friendly accommodations with access to numerous trails. Remember that most Georgia campgrounds require pets to be leashed at all times, and some may have breed or size restrictions, so always check specific pet policies before booking.

Are there pet-friendly camping cabins available in Georgia?

Pine Mountain Camp Ground offers pet-friendly cabins and is located less than three miles from Callaway Gardens and FDR Park. The campground features two dog parks, making it ideal for families traveling with pets. Okefenokee Pastimes Cabins and Campground also provides pet-friendly cabin options with convenient access to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. When booking a pet-friendly cabin, expect to pay an additional pet fee (typically $10-25 per night) and be prepared for specific rules regarding pet size, breed, and number allowed. Always check if pets can be left unattended in cabins, as policies vary. Some cabins may designate specific pet-friendly units, so book well in advance, especially during peak seasons.

What are the pet policies at Georgia RV parks?

Most Georgia RV parks welcome pets but have specific policies in place. Coastal GA RV Resort is very pet-friendly with a dog park, though sites are separated by bushes and trees for privacy. Red Gate Farms - RV Resort allows pets but has free-roaming campground cats, so owners must watch their dogs carefully. Common pet policies include: keeping pets leashed at all times (typically 6-foot maximum), cleaning up waste immediately, proof of current vaccinations, and restrictions on leaving pets unattended. Many parks limit the number of pets (usually 2-3 per site) and some may have breed or size restrictions. Dedicated pet relief areas or dog parks are increasingly common amenities, with Hawkins Pointe RV Park featuring a fenced dog park despite minimal other amenities.
