    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Campgrounds near Jefferson, Georgia range from state park tent sites and lakefront yurts to private RV parks with full hookups, covering northeast Georgia within about 30 minutes. Fort Yargo State Park, located 16 miles southwest in Winder, serves as a central camping destination with tent sites, RV hookups, and yurts along the lakeshore. Other options include Georgia RV Park (formerly Country Boys RV Park) in Commerce, Don Carter State Park near Gainesville, and Stone Mountain Park Campground. Most sites offer electrical hookups and water access, with several providing sewer connections for RVs. The region features a mix of state parks and privately operated campgrounds within 30 minutes of Jefferson.

Advance reservations are highly recommended at most developed campgrounds, particularly for weekend stays during peak seasons from March through October. Water and electric hookups are standard at most campgrounds, though full hookup availability varies. Most state parks in the area maintain year-round operations, while some Corps of Engineers sites like Old Federal and Duckett Mill operate seasonally from spring through fall. Georgia's variable climate means summer humidity and occasional thunderstorms should be expected, with milder conditions in spring and fall. Many campgrounds feature waterfront sites that book quickly. "Our site was very level, and pull through. No FHU, but they do have grey water dumps in numerous places in campground," noted one visitor about Fort Yargo State Park.

The camping near Jefferson centers around lake activities, with multiple sites situated on Lake Lanier and other waterways. Fort Yargo State Park receives consistently positive reviews for its lakefront camping, hiking trails, and mountain biking opportunities. Campers particularly appreciate the walk-in tent sites that offer more privacy while remaining accessible. "If you're like me and appreciate a bit of privacy when camping, the walk-in campsites at Fort Yargo are the place to go. Just a short 1-2 minutes walk from your car and bathrooms, but you feel much more secluded than the campsites in the regular campground," remarked one camper. RV-oriented properties like Georgia RV Park provide level sites with full hookups, and their proximity to shopping areas and Interstate 85 makes them convenient for travelers. Most developed campgrounds in the region maintain clean facilities with showers and toilets.

      Swords Dispersed Campsite

      Peaceful

I went solo camping and it was perfect. Quiet, peaceful, and clean. I drove down to the spot itself and I had misread a comment thinking I could drive my 2wd down to the spot itself. You can not without having trouble getting out. I almost had to call a tow truck for my Tahoe to get out. However, I was able to drive out eventually. Great spot for some peace while still having cell signal if you need. Would visit in the cool months though as August was far too hot.

      Lake Rabun Beach Recreation Area

      Wonderful place

We have been here a few times and love it. The hosts are kind and check on everyone throughout the day. There is a lot of room between the camp sites. There is a lot to do in the area. The bathrooms are clean and grounds well maintained.

      Fort Yargo State Park Campground

      Lakefront Overlook

We stayed at Site #45, and it quickly became one of our favorite campsites because it felt more like a wooded overlook, perched above the lake. The breeze coming off the water kept us comfortable enough to enjoy a campfire even on a hot August evening.

The site fit our 14x10 tent comfortably, but I wouldn’t recommend anything larger. There isn’t a true tent pad, and you’ll notice the slope while sleeping—but the view from inside the tent was priceless. We experienced a four-hour thunderstorm and didn’t have any standing water at our site afterward.

⚠️ The slope becomes much steeper near the shoreline, so I wouldn’t recommend this site for toddlers or anyone with mobility concerns.

🛝 Our 7-year-old loved fishing from the shoreline and thought the steep slope made the perfect slide to get back down to the water. Built-in slide + dirty shorts = happy camper. 😂

🔥 The site includes a clean fire ring with an adjustable cooking grate and a separate standing charcoal grill.

🦟 We didn’t have any issues with mosquitoes during our stay.

🚰 The shared water pump wasn’t working during our visit.

🚽 The bathhouse was spacious, clean, and only a short walk away.

🚗 A community wagon is parked near the bathhouse for campers to use when hauling gear between their vehicle and campsite. Loved that!

      A few tips:

🪵 The Visitor Center sells $6 bundles of firewood and has a nice selection of souvenirs.

🐜 Plenty of flies and large ants, so keep your food put away and your tent zipped.

🪲 Cicadas were loud at night. I loved it, but our 7-year-old slept with his wireless headphones on. If you’re a light sleeper, you may want to pack earplugs if you’re camping here June-August.

🎣 We caught more bluegill fishing from our campsite than we did from the fishing dock.

🌅 If you’re looking for one of the best views in the campground and don’t mind sleeping on a slight incline, Site #45 is well worth considering.

      Tallulah Gorge State Park Campground

      Unexpected adventure

Originally intended to do some car camping after a day of hiking but I ended up reserving a camp site and grabbing a tent from a near by Walmart and I enjoyed every minute of it. This may not matter to most but it may matter to some...I am a black male and although I didn't see many people that looked like me, everyone was extremely friendly. Definitely got a lot more attention than I would have liked but at least I knew pple were looking out for me lol. Beautiful scenery, fun trails, fishing, a full outdoor experience.

      Lake Hartwell State Park Campground

A repeat favorite and easy camping site for beginners

Stayed here a few times at different sites and always love it! I tent camp, so can't speak to the cabins or RV sites. Never too busy when I've gone in May and August. Tent sites are right on the water, so it's easy to move between swimming and your site. Other campers have been friendly. Water spigots near the campsites that usually run clear, I've drank from them with no issue. If you're keen on an air mattress, you can usually find an empty RV site to plug in your pump and then just carry the inflated mattress to your site. No drive ups, though sites like T10-13 are pretty darn close to the parking. T1-2 are a bit further from their closest parking, but still not bad. 1/2 are a bit set off from the rest with a fairly steep drop off that overlooks the beach, so be careful! Small trail leads you down to the water. 9 and 10-13 are close together, with 9 a bit set apart. Can't speak to the other sites personally. Boats don't come too close to the swimming sections by the campsites which is nice. Good mix of sun and shade. Got absolutely poured on (even inside my tent) one trip and still had a great time, easy place to have fun. Nearest grocery store is pretty far, so make one trip for supplies on the way up and enjoy camping the rest of the time.

      Lake Hartwell State Park Campground

      Shady sites with lake views

Beautiful park with lake views. Some of the roads through the campground were bumpy. Views were worth it though. Most spots in the area of my site were shady, even if a bit close. It was hot in June, so the shade was welcome. Bathhouse was newer and clean.

      Bolding Mill

      Site 27

This is our favorite lake Lanier campground. Our family loves to visit here a few times a year. I wish they would build the pier back and put some tlc into the bathrooms. Advice, don’t plan to arrive at closing. You’ll be greeted rudely by the gate house workers. I missed their call due to it being “potential spam” and well trying to get on the road. If you’re going to arrive after 6:30 call ahead bc I guess there’s not an after hours come through the gate and finish checking in the next day option. It’s 2026. Do you really need me to show ID and harass me for my tag number? This can all be uploaded online, right? Text? The check in for the army corp of engineer sites could use improvement. Then perhaps you wouldn’t have to employee as many people who are obviously unhappy with their job.

    Guide to Jefferson

Camping sites near Jefferson, Georgia are situated within a mix of rolling hills and lakeside terrain in the northeast Georgia Piedmont region. The area sits at elevations between 900-1200 feet, featuring a mix of hardwood forests and pine stands surrounding multiple water bodies. Seasonal variations include humid summers with temperatures averaging 85-90°F from June through August, while spring and fall offer milder conditions with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 65-75°F.

    What to do

Paddling on Lake Lanier: Multiple campgrounds near Jefferson provide direct lake access for kayaking and canoeing. At Old Federal, the water proximity makes for convenient launching. "Most campsites on the water. Everything manicured and groomed to perfection. Very helpful people at the front gate. All amenities kept in excellent condition," notes Angie A.

Hiking trails: The trail system at Fort Yargo State Park offers varied terrain options with both wooded paths and lakeside routes. "Set back in the woods on a beautiful pond. Deer roaming everywhere. Mountain bike trails and hiking trails inside park. When I have more time we plan to go back and take it all in," shares Todd L.

Swimming beach access: Several lakefront campgrounds maintain dedicated swimming areas with sandy beaches. "We had a great time summer camping with our boat, RV, friends & kids! Would definitely recommend booking early and getting one of the lots that slopes down to the water," writes Shana C. about Shoal Creek Campground.

    What campers like

Spacious waterfront sites: At Bolding Mill, the lakeside sites receive consistent praise for their positioning. "Almost all the campsites have the best lake views and you can do pretty much anything on the lake! Great place for the whole family," reports Bethany M. The views extend across multiple locations on Lake Lanier.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Deer sightings are common throughout campgrounds in the area. "We camped at spot 97... The view is fantastic. We brought 2 dogs which they enjoyed the scenery. A lot of deer just walking around," notes Darrel W. about Shady Grove Campground.

Clean facilities: Many campers highlight the well-maintained bathhouses and common areas. "Very relaxing Campground with spacious sites right on the water. Clean bathrooms and bathhouse. Pet friendly," writes Brett D. about Duckett Mill. These facilities typically include hot showers and regularly serviced restrooms.

    What you should know

Reservation windows: Most campgrounds open reservations 13 months in advance for peak season (April-October). Sites with premium views book quickly, particularly for summer weekends and holidays. "We go camping every memorial day weekend and this year it was at Don Carter. We love this camp ground! Its fairly new, probably under 12 years," reports Cameron G.

Alcohol policies vary: Some parks strictly enforce no-alcohol rules with significant penalties. "Nice campground. If you enjoy having a beer while camping don't come here. Beautiful day, beer in a solo cup playing cards with my wife at a picnic table. We were not making noise, nobody complained about us. Ranger pulls up and gave us both tickets," warns Rick B. about Shady Grove Campground.

Seasonal operation schedules: Several Corps of Engineers campgrounds close during winter months. "Stayed in October next to the water. It was peaceful until the second night when 2 families of tent campers came and played music and talked until 1 am. But we liked it and the kids liked the pier and the water is nice for kayaking. Booked next trip already in April," shares AR M. about Bolding Mill.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Don Carter State Park offers modern play equipment near camping areas. "Wonderful campground! Its fairly new, probably under 12 years, and everything is so clean and well taken care of. There is also a beach for the kids to play at as well, very well kept," recommends Cameron G.

Site selection for safety: When booking lakefront sites with children, check for steep drop-offs to the water. "We tent camped here..we were up on a steep hill, but it was beautiful!! The bathrooms were close to the site. We had a great family time here!! Deer were roaming thru the campsite," explains Rebecca F. about River Forks Park.

Tent site accessibility: Some parks have walk-in tent sites requiring gear transportation. "The test sights are amazing, bring a cart because it's a 1/4 mile walk, the sights are super clean and easy access," advises Chad S. about Don Carter State Park.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many waterfront sites require significant leveling equipment. "Every site we've stayed at has been great. They vary in size, but most have easy access to the water. Bathrooms are well maintained as well," reports Julie B. about Old Federal.

Hookup placement: At River Forks Park & Campground, some sites have utility connections on the opposite side from standard RV designs. "Several shower stalls had no hook or fixture to hang a towel or clothing. Extra careful site selection is warranted," warns Michael C. Calling ahead for specific site details is recommended.

Alternative supply options: The KOA in Commerce provides convenient access to supplies. "We have enjoyed our full hook up site. This campground is located close to shopping stores and has their own laundry and shower house. It is a nice, clean and seems very well maintained," notes Steveanna L.
