Best Campgrounds near Lee, FL

Campgrounds near Lee, Florida provide a mix of RV resorts and state park camping with varied amenities and settings. Several well-established facilities like Hillsborough River State Park Campground and Tampa East RV Resort accommodate tent camping, RV sites with full hookups, and cabin options. The eastern Tampa Bay area features multiple private RV parks including Southern Aire RV Resort and Lazydays RV Resort, which cater primarily to motorhomes and trailers with electric, water and sewer connections, while also offering cabin rentals at select locations.

Most developed campgrounds in the region remain open year-round due to Florida's favorable climate, though advance reservations are strongly recommended during winter months when seasonal visitors increase occupancy rates. According to one visitor at Southern Aire RV Resort, "Excellent accommodations include a large clubhouse for socializing, playing games and 2 pool tables. Large laundry room and bathrooms/showers, all very clean and in good repair." Access to most campgrounds is straightforward via paved roads, with many sites located near major highways for convenient travel. Water and electric hookups are standard at most locations, while amenities like showers, laundry facilities, and dump stations vary between parks. Many campgrounds enforce pet policies that allow dogs with some restrictions.

Campers report varying levels of privacy and spacing between sites at different facilities. The more developed RV resorts tend to feature closely spaced sites with limited natural separation. As described in feedback on The Dyrt, "The sites are very close together. No fire pits. Heated pool and hot tub, the diner is pretty cool with basic bar food." State parks generally offer more spacious sites with better tree coverage and natural surroundings. Several campgrounds provide recreational amenities including swimming pools, shuffleboard courts, and organized activities for guests. Proximity to Tampa attractions represents a significant draw for many visitors, with most campgrounds situated within 30-45 minutes of urban amenities while still providing a camping experience. Sites with shade trees are particularly valued in this region due to Florida's heat, especially during summer months.

    Cumpressco Equestrian Campground

What a surprise! AND it's FREE!

I've been to other WMA (Water Management Area) campgrounds before and had low expectations, this one wowed me! For those who don't know Florida has some wildlands set aside and camping and other use is allowed for FREE. If camping one must register first and reserve an available spot (watermatters.org, once reservation is accepted a confirmation email is sent along with the combination for the lock on the gate at the entrance. Spacious with a nice oak canopy for shade (unless you are dependent on roof solar), great for tent campers, RV campers, Skoolies, car campers, equestrian campers, hammock campers (depending on season due to bugs), backpackers. There are about 15 picnic tables and firepits scattered and one pavilion with 4 tables. There is one port-a-let that I have noticed so far. There are many water spigots supplying non-potable water. This campground calls itself an equestrian campground but you are welcome without a horse. I have seen plenty of sign of horses having been here. There are MANY trails leading out of the campground and a big dirt trail, where vehicles are not allowed, for hiking, biking and riding. This campground is very clean. This is going on my favorite list. Like many WMA lands GPS can be wonky... verify location both on a map and via your reservation email. Make sure your GPS directions are taking you to the actual entrance and not some service/access road. For this campground it is about a mile of dirt road, from the gate to the actual campground. Campsites are not numbered and it is first come first served. BTW I am the only one here!!! Bo us? There is a cattle field bordering one side of the campground and I here baby calves! Big thing to mention this is boondocking ONLY, no electric, no water hookups, no dumping, no trashcan. Pack in pack out, leave no trace. But hey it's FREE and beautiful

Camp Margaritaville RV Resort and Cabana Cabins Auburndale

    Such a fun Resort!

Gorgeous grounds, well maintained facilities, great campsites with tiki huts, two bars, two huge pools, and lots of activities for all ages! We spent 4 days here and wished we had less things planned so that we could better take advantage of all they offered. We will be back!

    Sun n Fun Campground

Amazing way to see the airshow

Large dispersed camping area with good views of the airshow, included access to the ground display area, and great facilities considering how large the event is. I will certainly be back with the family.

    Dream Lake Camp

    Very disappointing experience

Very disappointing experience. We reserved a 50-amp full-service site, but upon arrival were given only a 30-amp spot with no services. Because of this, we had no choice but to leave. Despite the issue clearly being on their end, they refused to refund the unused days. Craig repeatedly postponed the refund, always pushing it to“next week,” and after a month of waiting, we gave up. On top of that, the place was not well maintained and the overall service was poor. I would not recommend staying here.

    Clearwater RV Resort

    DO NOT STAY HERE.

Robert the (I guess)manager is rude and disrespectful.  He tries to be intimidating but is obviously a meth head; smoking his cigarettes in my face, just trying to get me to react.  He refused to refund my money after 10 days of a month commitment.  I didn’t  even sign a contract as no one was there to check me in.  Full timers kids running about with no supervision screaming and acting out.  Run don’t walk from this glorified trailer park.

    Upper Hillsborough WMA

Florida WMA site close to town

This place has many pros and a few cons... I'll get the cons out of the way first... it is just 3 miles out of Zephyrhills Hills, FL so there is plenty of noise from nearby busy road. A train runs through this property several times a day/night and is loud. It is right next door to a mobile home community and these homes are visible from parts of the campground. Pros? It is close to town if you need something. A train runs through it so not many people come to camp here. There are several picnic tables and firepits. There are 3 port-a-pottie, all clean. It is beautiful, especially deeper in the property along the trails. This is a strictly boondock, pack it out location... no electric, no dump station and only non-potable water via a hand pump at a sink near the staff shack (staff only pr a sent during hunting days). There is. Good mix of sun and shade with a generous oak tree canopy. I could keep my class b in the shade and run my portable solar panels in the sun or keep my rig in the sun as well. Dogs are allowed on leash. There are no numbered sites, just set up where you please, there is plenty of flat spots.I had good cell reception with TMobile. Reservations are required and gate lock code given.Even with the train etc I enjoyed my time there, I REALLY enjoyed having the place to myself all but one day.

Little Manatee River State Park Campground

    Gate locked at sunset

We were looking forward to staying here, but when we arrived the gate was locked and we did not have the code. We called the phone number at the gate, but nobody answered so we were left scrambling for somewhere else to stay at 9pm.

I'm sure it is a lovely park, but I didn't see anything on their website or here about the gate being locked.

    Lake Louisa State Park Campground

    Great Park near Orlando

Stayed just one night on March.  Great tent sites and mostly private. Facilities are clean with showers. Water and power at the site. Beautiful walks and lakes, Lots of birds and rabbits.

Only issue was the early morning traffic on the nearby highway (#27) was noisy.

Guide to Lee

Camping near Lee, Florida offers extensive options for outdoor recreation with ample shade during summer months. The region features freshwater springs, river systems, and wildlife preserves where campers can observe native Florida species. Camping is available year-round with more availability on weekdays, especially at county park facilities which operate on first-come, first-served systems.

What to do

Swimming in natural springs: Lithia Springs Conservation Park features a natural spring that maintains a constant 72°F temperature. As one visitor notes, "The spring area is clean and well kept. The sound of the breeze through the trees, just wow!" The swimming area provides relief during hot weather and offers a unique Florida experience.

Mountain biking on varied terrain: Alafia River State Park Campground contains some of central Florida's most challenging off-road biking trails. A visitor mentioned, "I loved that they had a ton of different trails to choose from, some just hiking or biking, and some mixed ones. Really well kept." The park features trails built on former phosphate mining land with elevation changes unusual for Florida.

Paddling opportunities: Edward Medard Park offers kayaking on its reservoir with rentals available. One camper shared, "Kayaking and fishing on the lake is a blast!" The 700-acre reservoir provides ample space for water activities with several access points near the campground.

What campers like

Wildlife viewing: Hillsborough River State Park Campground offers abundant wildlife sightings. A camper observed, "At night the green fireflies put on an amazing light show in the canopy." Another mentioned seeing "rapids to look at" and "tons of wildlife" during their stay.

Spacious, secluded sites: Colt Creek State Park Campground provides well-designed camping areas. A visitor shared, "Camp spots are big, flat with gravel parking areas. Power and water at each site for RV camping." Another camper remarked, "The long and windy ride in gives you a trip back to some real Florida."

Clean facilities: Several parks maintain well-kept bathhouses and amenities. At Fort De Soto Campground, a visitor noted, "They clean them daily, so they are not bad." Lithia Springs Conservation Park received similar praise: "Bathhouse was clean. They offer recycling, which is a great plus!"

What you should know

Insect preparation: Florida parks can have significant mosquito populations, especially near water. A camper at Hillsborough River State Park warned, "The mosquitoes were ridiculous in June. We practically had to anchor our toddler to the picnic table so he wasn't carried away by them." Another visitor advised, "Bring plenty of bugspray, the mosquitoes here are big enough to carry away a small dog."

Reservation systems vary: While state parks like Colt Creek and Hillsborough River accept reservations months in advance, county parks operate differently. At Edward Medard Park, "This first come first served facility is a favorite of locals," with weekends filling "usually by Thursday night." Lithia Springs also operates without reservations.

Hammock restrictions: Some parks limit tree usage. At Lithia Springs, visitors note that "nothing can be tied to trees, including hammocks." At Hillsborough River, there are mixed messages as "the windshield placard they give you says don't hang things from the trees, however the parks website says it's fine if you're hanging a hammock with 1" thick webbing."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Edward Medard Park offers "picnic and playground areas" near the campground. Another visitor mentioned the park's "climbing park playing area" which provides entertainment for children after swimming or hiking.

Accessibility options: Colt Creek State Park features specially designed sites for those with mobility needs. A visitor explained, "We had the opportunity to camp at one of the handicap accessible sites recently and found it to be very convenient. Path and pad on site were roomy and fire pit was higher than usual for safety."

Activities for varied interests: Fort De Soto Campground provides options for different age groups. A camper described, "The playground with good swings and also a sturdy playground that offered plenty of opportunity for my four year old to blow off some steam. The ground is all recycled rubber, which I love as a parent."

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: At Lazydays RV Resort, reviewers note the importance of choosing sites wisely. A camper advised, "Sites sit 90 degrees to the narrow street, so backing can be tricky, especially with all the vehicles parked along the road perpendicular to the pad entrance." Another mentioned, "We reserved one of the larger sites, which was big enough for our 39' 5th wheel, but we had to disconnect as our F450 was in the road."

Water management: Water pressure varies between parks. One RVer at Lazydays noted, "Water pressure was above 60 psi, so we needed a reducer." At Colt Creek State Park, "Power and water at each site for RV camping" makes setup convenient, while Lithia Springs offers full hookups.

Satellite and connectivity: Most campgrounds near Lee offer reasonable connectivity options. At Lazydays, "We got 4 bars on Verizon" and "the CG has cable, and we received 59 channels. You also get a lot of OTA channels, and we could have used satellite."
