Best RV Parks & Resorts near Winterthur, DE

Lums Pond State Park Campground near Bear offers full hookup RV sites with 50-amp service across two camping loops. The first loop contains sites 1-30, better suited for larger rigs, while the second loop accommodates smaller RVs. Several gravel sites can handle RVs up to 45 feet, though tow vehicles often need to park at an angle. Thousand Trails Circle M in Lancaster provides pull-through sites with water, electric, and sewer hookups, though navigation through the park requires caution with larger motorhomes. Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina features waterfront sites with 30/50-amp service and concrete pads, despite tight spacing between neighbors. "Our site was level and covered in clean gravel, had a paver patio with table and chairs, and a nice fire ring with more chairs," noted one traveler about the Lancaster-New Holland KOA.

Throughout the region, cell service varies considerably, with most parks reporting 1-3 bars on Verizon and spotty AT&T coverage. Some RV parks close seasonally, typically operating from April through November, while others like Delaware Motel and RV Park remain open year-round. When approaching Philadelphia-West Chester KOA, drivers of 40+ foot motorhomes should exercise caution as the narrow interior roads create challenging 90-degree backing angles at some sites. Most parks offer sanitary dump stations, though Lums Pond features full hookups eliminating this concern. Pet policies differ across facilities—many welcome pets but enforce restrictions on walking areas. Laundry facilities are limited, with only a few parks like Bar Harbor offering on-site machines.

Atsion Family Camp — Wharton State Forest

    4x4ing in the Pine Barrens

    Atsion Family Campground

Off US 206 and about 1/2 a mile up Atsion Road in New Jersey’s Wharton State Forest, you’ll find the Atsion Family Campground. The facility is run by the Dept of Environmental Protection and offers Tent, Trailer and Group Sites. There are also Cabins for rent as well, but only available during the summer months, After Memorial Day until October. AFC is one of several campgrounds in WSF and is the largest with 50 camping sites. Amenities include a handicapped accessible restroom/shower building, several drinking water spigots, and a waste dump for trailers. There are no electric hook ups and cell service is low, but manageable. Plenty of sun (shady too) so bring your solar powered generators and cell signal boosters if you need to stay connected. AFC is also pet friendly, so bring your 4 legged furry family members, after registering them with the camp site.

The individual sites are spacious with a pic-nick table and fire ring grill. Some sites have lake-side water access, so bring your canoes and kayaks and reserve these sites (4, 8, 10, 12, 20 and 22) early as they are popular. The ground is sandy and relatively level for easy camp set up. Some sites are close to a roadway, so you do get some car noise, and like all unmonitored camp sites, loud, unruly campers can be lurking among the pines. Be sure to get your fire wood from the guy that lives across the street from the campground entrance. 5 bucks, on the honor system, a good amount of wood, open 24/7.

Nearby is the Atsion Recreation Area, which offers fishing, walking, biking and horseback trails, a life guard monitored beach by the lake with restrooms and snacks (Summer Months). Only 15 minutes away, a quick drive, is Batso Village, an old iron and glass community from the late 1700s to early 1900s. NJ State Park Rangers are working hard keeping the area clean, rehabilitated, and educational center allowing you to walk through the old buildings and time as you image what life was like back then. Wharton SF is huge, over 122,000 acres of sandy terrain, towering pine trees, lakes/rivers and off roading trails!! Y’all should come and play in the Pine Barrens

    The Loose Caboose Campground

    Quiet w/ spacious sites

No frills or extras at the campground, but great place to set up camp! This campground has spacious level sites with gravel pads, full hookups, and fire rings. A great location to stay in proximity to lots of Lancaster attractions/activities. Owners were both very helpful and friendly. The campground is currently offering a Coronavirus Camper Stimulus package (see their website for promotions) based on the PA re-opening phases when we went. This made an already affordable campground even more affordable while allowing people the opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy nature.

Some great hiking and biking trails nearby not to mention a nice area to walk in the woods at the top of the campgrounds mountain. We specifically went to two different sections of the Enola Low Grade Trail about 20 & 30 minutes away. Our favorite was along the Susquehanna River in Manor Township.

This isn't a resort, but if you need a place to wind down, have a fire w/ some peace and quiet, and camp this place is nice. Some rundown trailers and an old falling apart house in the campground that take away from it's beauty is the only reason I gave it a 4.

We have a 31' travel trailer and we had Site 62 at top of mountain which we fit into fine. The sites are mostly back-in sites. All the sites at the top were just as awesome!

    Spacious Skies Country Oaks

    Great Value Getaway!

We stayed at Country Oaks Campground in Dorothy, NJ, for a 4-day weekend. We’re so glad we did!

Our site(#15) was a pull-thru with 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable. The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine. The site included a concrete patio, picnic table, and fire ring.

The campground was clean and well-maintained. The swimming pool was large and the water crystal clear. The game room included air hockey, pinball, video games, and a few arcade games. The store was stocked with typical essentials like propane, fire wood, and snacks. Daily trash collection was a nice convenience.

The staff and camp hosts were all friendly and eager to help. We especially love that.

The majority of sites are seasonal which all seemed well kept.

The only negative was bad wifi service. Our Verizon cell signal was strong which kept us connected.

This is a great campground. Many thanks to the staff for a great stay and lots of value at Country Oaks for$65 per night. We’ll certainly go back!

Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina

    RV Park surrounded by water!

Our first visit (March 2018) was just prior to peak season (lower rates) and we had a site literally 10 ft. from the water! Full hook ups and sites were a little close, but nice. There seemed to be a lot of long term/permanent residents, but most sites along the waterfront remained open. The campground seemed to stress pet restrictions both in the rules section of their registration packet and signage around the grounds. There was a pet exercise/walking area, but could use some sprucing up. However, no one really made an issue of walking your dog around the campground and as the weekend came around, more and more dogs were around.

You have to drive through a residential neighborhood to reach Bar Harbor, so big rigs take care/caution. Would like to try Bar Harbor again sometime.

    Philadelphia-West Chester KOA

    Great campground west of Philadelphia

We spent the Memorial Day weekend at Philadelphia/ West Chester KOA Holiday in Coatesville, PA and had a good time.

We paid$135/night for Back-in Patio Site#25. A bit pricey considering the lack of elbow room, but it’s a great site and everything is well-kept. There was just barely enough room for the motorhome and Jeep Wrangler.

I did have major trouble backing in because the road is too narrow for a 45’ motorhome to back in on a nearly 90-degree angle. So difficult, that I cracked the bottom of my front cap catching the grass and gravel beside the grave road. I think this would’ve otherwise been a 5-star review.Don’t stay in this site in a big motorhome. The trailers/5th wheels seem better because they ‘bend’ at the hitch.

    THINGS I LIKED:

    • Great site(once you’re in it!) including patio furniture on a paver patio and seating around an upgraded fire pit. The landscaping made up for the tight squeeze.

    • Clean and level gravel site with well-maintained utility hook-ups.

    • Close to Longwood Gardens; Wilmington, Delaware; and a handful of local museums and gardens. Not too far from Philadelphia.

    • Super friendly staff. Every interaction with employees was extremely nice. Other campgrounds and even hotels can learn a lot from these folks.

    • The whole park is quiet and well-maintained.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

    • Heads up, big rig owners! Tight squeeze into Site 25.

    • Get cozy, the sites are quite small and tightly packed together.

    WOULD WE COME BACK?

    • Absolutely, this is a nice campground staffed by super nice people with plenty to see and do in the area.

    Country Acres Campground

    Clean, quiet, and really nice

Our first trip of 2023 was to Country Acres Campground in Gordonville, PA. And what a great campground to start our season! This is a great spot for visiting Pennsylvania Amish of Lancaster County and about a one-hour drive to Hersheypark.

Our site(# 837) was a good size for our motor home+ toad. It was level and covered in gravel, like all sites and roadways within the campground. Our site had full hookups, decent wi-fi, cable TV, a picnic table, fire ring, and nicely kept grassy area between sites.

Becci was super nice at check-in and check-out. They offer a 2:00 pm check-out which we enjoyed. And there are free tickets available for the Amish Farmland Bus Tour. There’s a small, basic tree at the front office. The pool wasn’t yet opened for our stay. They offered a 10% Good Sam discount(which is nice).

Bottom line: We had a great time at Country Acres Campground and can’t wait to go back!

    THINGS I LIKED:

    • Clean and well-maintained property

    • Quiet campground with friendly neighbors

    • All of the RVs appeared well-maintained with no seasonal sites

    • Easy access from Route 30

    Old Mill Stream Campground

    Good stay

The entrance in off the main road turns you into the theme park. Fear not. Turn in and follow the road to the right and into the campground. We stayed on site 123 with a 40 ft Allegro Bus. Plenty of room to maneuver a big rig. All gravel sites and we had full hookup with 50 Amp.

Guide to Winterthur

Regional campgrounds near Winterthur, Delaware offer a variety of RV accommodations across eastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware, and parts of Maryland. Winter temperatures typically range from 25-40°F with summer highs reaching 85-90°F. The area features rolling hills with elevations between 200-500 feet, making it accessible for most camping vehicles while still providing scenic terrain for hiking and outdoor activities.

What to do

Hiking trails around pond: At Lums Pond State Park Campground, visitors can access a comprehensive trail system. "Perfect place to hike, bike and picnic!!" notes Ella P. The park features a 7-mile hiking trail and an 8-mile multi-purpose trail as mentioned by Sandy E., making it ideal for day-long outdoor adventures.

Fishing opportunities: Lake-In-Wood Campground provides a large pond for fishing enthusiasts. "Huge pond for fishing, miniature gold, nice indoor and outdoor pool and a kiddie pool," reports Jen R. The campground also features unique accommodations including a treehouse and double-decker bus for those seeking distinctive lodging options.

Water activities: Water-based recreation is popular at campgrounds with ponds or river access. "The campground sits in the center of a horseshoe curve of the river, bring tubes and kayaks! We didn't know but went and bought a tube and spent the day on the river!" shares Karla R. about Thousand Trails Circle M, highlighting the spontaneous water adventures possible in the region.

What campers like

Live entertainment: Weekend activities often include organized events at many campgrounds. At Sun Valley Campground, Scott J. reports, "The Saturday night bands are concert worthy. We have enjoyed our stay more than you ever imagined." This entertainment adds social dimension to camping experiences in the region.

Diverse accommodation options: Variety of lodging choices appeals to different camping preferences. "Some cabins, like those in my photos, are brand new and have everything you would need to set up house minus linens, towels, toilet paper, paper goods and toiletries," explains Phinon W. about Spring Gulch Resort Campground, noting the modern amenities available beyond traditional tent sites.

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathhouses are consistently praised across several campgrounds. "The bath house was absolutely immaculate, and the design made even my public-bathroom-phobic sister-in-law comfortable and at ease," reports Mark about Lums Pond State Park Campground, highlighting the attention to cleanliness that enhances camping comfort.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Many RV sites near Winterthur, Delaware operate seasonally with specific opening dates. Sun Valley Campground runs from "April 1 to November 1" according to their listing information, while Spring Gulch Resort operates from "Mar 21 - Dec 1," providing clear timeframes for planning trips to the region.

Site leveling challenges: Terrain at some campgrounds requires preparation for uneven sites. "Sun Valley Campground provides sites that are fairly level, but are very rocky, so this is something to keep in mind if you are tent camping. We have heavy duty solid steel pegs and still had trouble pegging everything down," cautions Phinon W., offering practical advice for tent campers.

Variation in site spacing: Spring Gulch Resort Campground offers different site configurations. "The Prime Sites are very spacious," notes Steve R., while Beth B. mentions "Lots were a bit uneven, but pull through which was nice," indicating the importance of requesting specific site types when making reservations.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina offers child-friendly amenities in a waterfront setting. "There was a fenced dog area and play set," notes Laure D., making it suitable for families with both children and pets needing outdoor recreation space.

Activities scheduling: Family-oriented campgrounds often provide structured events throughout the day. "Activities though the day were fun. Clean bath houses and staff was friendly," reports Dawn T. about Spring Gulch Resort Campground, highlighting the organized programming that keeps children engaged.

Consider water safety: Campgrounds with water features require extra vigilance with children. "The tent loop is surrounded by water on 3 sides. There is no safety fence," warns Danielle S. about Mays Landing Resort, providing important safety information for parents planning trips with small children.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger rigs: When searching for RV sites near Winterthur, Delaware, advance research is essential. At Thousand Trails Circle M, "As with all thousand trails, this campground is first come best site. While the top part of the campground seemed more communal, we chose the lower, Riverside sites and we're glad we did!" advises Karla R., suggesting strategic arrival for optimal positioning.

Hookup accessibility: Full hookup sites offer convenience but may have layout challenges. Nick E. reports about Thousand Trails Circle M, "We got pretty lucky and were assigned one of the concrete pads that was pretty level. It is absolutely beautiful out. The grounds are well-kept." This highlights the benefit of secured reservations for premium sites.

Seasonal flooding awareness: Weather patterns affect low-lying sites at certain campgrounds. "We first had a 2 point site near the river, but when it rains the sites get flooded with runoff from the campground," cautions Kasey M. about Thousand Trails Circle M, demonstrating the importance of selecting elevated sites during rainy seasons.
