Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Trinidad, CO

Trinidad Lake State Park's South Shore Campground provides designated pet-friendly sites overlooking the lake with covered picnic tables and fire pits. All camping areas allow leashed pets throughout the grounds, including Carpios Ridge Campground which offers full hookup RV sites with electric, water, and sewer connections. Pets must remain on leashes no longer than 6 feet at all times in both campgrounds. Both tent and RV campers can bring their dogs, with specific tent-only spots (sites 101-110) available at South Shore. Raton Pass Camp & Cafe across the state line in New Mexico accommodates pets at all their tent and RV sites with no breed restrictions. The showers and bathroom facilities at Trinidad Lake are exceptionally clean, though showers require quarters to operate.

Dog owners appreciate the lake views and multiple walking trails around Trinidad Lake State Park where leashed pets can join hikers along the dam path and surrounding trail system. The campground is located within a 15-minute drive of Trinidad's veterinary services and pet supply stores. During summer months, early morning or evening walks are recommended due to hot temperatures on exposed trails. Wildlife is abundant in the area, so keeping dogs leashed protects both local animals and pets. Tower 64 Motel & RV Park closer to town allows pets but requires careful navigation of sites as they are extremely close together with uneven terrain. The area around the lake features excellent bird watching opportunities where quiet, well-behaved dogs can accompany their owners along marked trails.

    Raton KOA

A friendly place to stop and recharge

The Raton KOA is conveniently located off I-25 in Raton, NM. The campground offers of a mixture of back-in and pull through sites that are a mix of mostly live gravel and dirt. Most sites have 20/30 amp service, water, and septic hookups, although less expensive sites with fewer amenities are also available.

The campground offers a fenced in dog park where the pups can run off leash. There is also a nice grassy walking path around the perimeter of the property with trash cans and dog waste stations positioned every 100 yards.

The campground owner, Grant, is great to work with. He helped us get setup with the park WiFi and was super responsive to any questions we had. Don’t forget to ask him for the WiFi access code when you check in!

    Lake 13-Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge

    Empty Lake but FREE.

FREE campground! Large relatively flat grass lot with garbage cans and picnic tables. Pit toilets and recycling at  the entrance. The lake was completely dry but has fishing and trolling motor boats only allowed when there is water. Very quiet place to stay the night. There was only one other camper that showed up when we stayed here. Lots of wildlife and pets allowed on leash.

Carpios Ridge Campground — Trinidad Lake State Park

    Great little state park campground

This place has something for everyone: camping, hiking, fishing, boating on the lake, playground for kids, and close to Trinidad for supplies and dining. Camping spots are spread out enough and have some sites with great views of the lake and surrounding mountains. You can see plenty of wildlife walking around the campground and trail. Bathrooms, showers, and laundry are very clean and well kept. All the staff that we have met were very friendly and informative, and there is another state park opening near by called Fishers Peak which looks like it will have some good hiking. This is my second time visiting here (first was just an overnight) and we will definitely stop back here anytime we are in the area.

South Shore Campground — Trinidad Lake State Park

    Piñon and Sage

As is typical of Colorado State Parks, Trinidad Lake is clean, well thought out, and beautiful. With the Sangria de Christo Mountins as a backdrop, it’s a nice place from which to base camp and explore. And if you’re there during the monsoons, expect a rainbow or two and the sweet smell of piñon and Sage.

    Bear Lake Campground (CO)

    High Altitude Lake Site

This campsite run by the National Forest Service is about two hours drive west of Trinidad Colorado and about 45 minutes from the small town of La Veta. The site is accessed off of scenic highway 12. You drive about 5 miles up a step dirt and gravel road with multiple switchback to reach near lake. This is the sister camp to blue lake campground about 1 mile down the mountain road. Bear lake is a beautiful mountain fishing lake at about 11,000 feet altitude. The site is very popular for families in the summer looking for great camping and even better fishing. The lake is full of trout and many campers were hitting their 4 fish limit. The site has better views of the mountain peaks than blue lake. The campsites have some privacy depending on the site. This place is very popular and reservations are a must in the summer months. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and ample parking for two cars or a van. They have great trails for hiking and ATVs here and campers frequently run into bears. So you need to prepare and take the necessary precautions. The site is also popular for ATVs. So would will need to prepare for vehicles running through the camp.

Blue Lake Campground - Temporarily Closed

    High Elevation Forest Camp

We camped here two nights in July 2019. The site is about two hours west of Trinidad Colorado in the Spanish Peaks Area along scenic highway 12. The road leading to the site is about 5 miles of step gravel and dirt road with multiple switchbacks. The road is wide enough for vans and smaller campers but not the larger 5th wheels or RVs. You follow road up the mountain along the stream to blue lake a small mountain lake that is popular for trout fishing The campground is just north of the lake. The have a couple of loops with about 10 sites in each loop. Most of the sites are located along a beautiful wooded mountain stream. The high elevation of 10,000 keeps the temps down in the summer and the night sky is spectacular. The camp was full during our stay and reservations are highly recommended. A few campers were moving around each night for the odd opening. They have fire wood, water, and nice clean pit toilets. Our site number 8 was great and positioned on the trail to the lake and along the stream. You can see the mountain tops from sites 6 and 7 but they are along the road. This is a popular area for ATVs. So you may have company on the trails or around the site. The sites had a nice mix of tents, vans, and campers. We plan to come back in the fall. This is a keeper. Each site had a picnic table, fire ring and ample parking for two cars or one van. You do have some privacy between the sites. The camps along the river including 8, 9, and 10 are outstanding.

    Lathrop State Park

    Clean quiet, well managed

Just outside Walsenburg, CO, 2 small lakes. We had electric but did not use, loop D spots had some nice views of Spanish Peaks in distance (youngest peaks in Rockies), several small playgrounds for kids, SMALL shower stalls (coin op with changers available), some flush, some pit, toilets (all clean), 1 bar Verizon but were able to watch Chiefs/Chargers game on phone. Gift shop, paved trail around lake, some other hiking paths, quiet hours were kept by campers. Noticed staff made regular trips through grounds. Hogback trail moderate (perhaps on side of harder moderate, tough for older large dog--wouldn't take him on it again). Electric sites available (chose one but did not use the hookup). Did not notice ANY hwy noise in loop D.  Water spigots available at SOME sites and/or spots in campground with one designated water fill-up spot near entrance. Most if not all sites appeared level. Beware of prickly pear cactus while walking dogs, particularly at night.

Tower 64 Motel & RV Park

    Not bad for Trinidad 🤷🏻‍♂️

Not much to this RV park, large parking lot behind the Tower 64 motel serves as an RV campground.

Full hookups but be aware that the sites are stacked right on top of each other. We could barely fit our 24 ft rig in our spot. However it’s convenient to get to off the highway. Other options in the area are pretty much the same. Wouldn’t want to stay here more than one evening.

If you’re looking for something more remote checkout Trinidad Lake State Park. A little further of a drive but if you plan on staying longer than 1 night it’s prob the best option in this area.

Carpios Ridge Campground — Trinidad Lake State Park

    Nice Getaway!

Nice campground amongst pinons and juniper trees. Not your typical rows of spaces. Sites are spread out along several wandering loops.

Different size spaces and tent sites! No walk ups, must reserve online.

WalMart just south of Trinidad CO; which is full of interesting history.

    Fire pits and firewood available.

Full hook ups at $41 and nine dollar park fee daily.

Lots of shore birds at the lake. Lake wasn’t visible from our site but nearby.

Guide to Trinidad

Trinidad Lake State Park provides camping options with elevations around 6,200 feet above sea level in southern Colorado's foothills. The area experiences hot summer days with temperatures often exceeding 90°F from June through August, while nights can drop to the 50s even in summer months. Fall camping offers more moderate temperatures with highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s.

What to do

Fishing at Lake Maloya: Fish for trout at Sugarite Canyon State Park's 120-acre lake just across the New Mexico border. "The lake is fished nearly as much as Denver. Fish are bigger and easier to catch," notes Kayla M. about Sugarite Canyon State Park.

Historic exploration: Visit the remnants of a 1920s coal mining town at Sugarite Canyon. "Purpose to spend some time in the Ranger headquarters perusing the small dioramas depicting life in Sugarite Canyon during the turn of the 1900's," recommends Dave V. who stayed at Lake Alice Campground.

Stargazing: Take advantage of the minimal light pollution at Trinidad Lake. "At night there is zero light pollution and you can see so many stars," writes a camper who visited the area. The higher elevation campgrounds like Soda Pocket offer particularly dark skies.

What campers like

Variety of hiking trails: Explore trails ranging from easy lake loops to more challenging mesa climbs. "Little Horse Mesa Trail takes you to the top of the mesa... the last 50 yards are pretty much straight uphill. When you get to the top though it's like another world," shares Matt B. about Soda Pocket Campground.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Watch for birds, deer and other wildlife throughout the area. "We saw plenty of wildlife walking around the campground and trail," reports Nick U., who appreciated the natural setting at Carpios Ridge Campground.

Proximity to town amenities: Trinidad's services are easily accessible from most campgrounds. "Close to town but far away to see some stars of the eve," notes a visitor about Raton Pass Camp & Cafe, highlighting this balance between convenience and natural setting.

What you should know

Weather changes quickly: The area's elevated position can create sudden weather shifts. "Remember this site is on a hilltop... can also have some unpredictable weather roll through with high winds," warns Thomas B. about Carpios Ridge Campground.

Reservations recommended: Most campgrounds require advance booking, particularly in summer. "Reservations required but can make them by phone or internet upon arriving. Phone number is posted," advises Barbara P.

Water availability varies: Some campgrounds have limited water access. "Soda Pocket has no water, so bring plenty for a stay!" cautions a camper, while others note that water is available at the Lake Alice campground and shower facilities near park entrances.

Temperature fluctuations: Prepare for wide temperature swings. "Nice place to stay, but gets VERY HOT. And can also have some unpredictable weather roll through with high winds," shares a camper about the ridge-top locations.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Trinidad Lake State Park offers play areas for children. "Beautiful view and fun stuff for the kids to do! Hiking, playground, geocaching. We will definitely be back!" shares Ali C.

Educational opportunities: Use the historic sites for learning experiences. "Rangers came by one night and showed a group of kids a mountain lion pelt and a bear pelt," mentions a visitor at Soda Pocket Campground, highlighting the informal educational opportunities available.

Bear awareness: Teach proper food storage in this bear country. "Bear boxes provided, deer walked through campground often. I did see bear tracks while hiking but host said they've never been a human issue," notes Callie C. about Lake Alice Campground.

Short, interesting hikes: Look for the interpretive trails. "Well marked hiking trails, which I always appreciate," comments Allison B., adding that the trails with educational placards about the mining history are particularly engaging for young hikers.

Tips from RVers

Site selection matters: Choose your site carefully based on shade and view preferences. "Outer loop sites seemed best, but if you have young kids, consider that some outer loop sites with water views have a very steep drop off," advises Allison B.

Hookup considerations: Not all sites have full hookups. "No water at the sight, you need to fill your holding tank before you park. Electric only and dump site provided," explains Charyle C. about the Trinidad Lake facilities.

Weather preparation: The higher elevation campgrounds can experience significant wind. "The campground is on a hilltop. Very nice Pinon Pines and other small trees for cover... but gets VERY HOT. And can also have some unpredictable weather roll through with high winds," notes a visitor at Carpios Ridge.

Pet-friendly recommendations: For pet-friendly camping near Trinidad, Colorado, most campgrounds welcome dogs but require leashes. "We had the pleasure of staying several nights at Raton Pass Camp & Cafe... The views are spectacular, with a panoramic landscape!" shares Clifton B., who found the location to be pet-accommodating.
