Grocery options are more extensive in Gunnison, approximately 25 minutes from most cabin locations, with both a Safeway and local grocery stores available for more substantial shopping needs.

      Ouray KOA

      Heaven in the mountains

Wow is all I can say! After surviving towing the airstream up Red Mountain pass, we pulled into the KOA and couldn’t be more happy. Our site backed up to a stream that sounded wonderful with running water. Each site has a picnic table and a combo fire ring/grill. They even welcome you with three large fire logs! They now offer horseback riding right from inside the KOA. They have everything from teepees to tent, cabin and RV camping. A great restaurant on site with a well stocked store and laundry facilities. This place is really well run. The only complaint is the WiFi, which is non existent, however, they are currently working on that and should have campwide WiFi by summer.

      Elkhorn RV Resort

      Great spot in Lake City

This is our first visit to Lake City so I've nothing to compare it to, but I loved this RVPark. Linda was gracious and accommodating. Bathrooms were spotless AND warm. We are at tail end of season so the park was not full at all, but even if it had been there are tables and trees between each site keeping from feeling claustrophobic. We drove past the other RV Park in town - on Henson Creek - you are on the river, but also on the highway and it was packed in. Elk Horn is off the highway nestled against the mountain, and just 4 block walk to "down town" Lake City. Highly recommend this spot. Call to make reservations. Linda gets right back to you. We also stayed on one of the cabins to give kids more trailer room. You provide the top bedding, but there was a queen bed and a bunk (so 4 could sleep easy). No bathrooms in the cabin but your close to the bathrooms.

Yurt Camping, yes dogs are allowed

In addition to plenty of tent and RV sites, Ridgeway SP also has three heated and furnished yurts for those seeking an enhanced comfort level. Each unit includes a fridge, futon type beds, dinner table and chairs. Bring your fishing poles, hiking shoes, water craft and dogs, cause they're all allowed.

      Ouray Riverside Resort

      Beautiful Ouray

Nestled in a valley with beautiful view next to Uncompahgre River with wonderful walking path. Gravel parking right off hwy 550. Laundry, showers, restaurant. Primitive cabins and fully equipped cabins. Very friendly staff. Pet friendly. Close to uptown shopping and eating & grocery store. Pull thru and back in sites. Overflow parking for extra vehicles for a charge. Down side-you have to trailer to trailheads for SXS riding. Most tail heads are small parking areas but the riding in the mountains is priceless. Been here twice, same site and would go again.

South Fork Lodge & RV Park

Gravel pit, no bathroom, no amenities, ATV heavy

This is been one of my least favorite spots to stay thus far. This park has no bathrooms, no laundry, no fire pits… Nothing but a picnic table. It is fully gravel, sites weren’t level, and very loud early mornings with all of the ATV activity. I think it is far too expensive for the stay. The staff is nice, and it’s family owned—but everything else, including the location pretty much sucked. I really think it’s worth it to find another park around the area to stay.

We had full hook ups. WiFi didn’t work and no Phone service.

      Ouray KOA

Best spot for tent, RV, & cabin!

The spots are spread out enough that you have privacy, there’s attendants around 24 hours of the day to help, and it’s hands down the cleanest place we’ve ever stayed. We rented a cabin (we stopped in on July 4th, sold out of tent spots) but they managed to accommodate us last minute. The staff is incredibly nice, and the price was right. Our cabin is the 2nd biggest option, it included: a queen, bunk beds, love seat, fridge, sink, and a microwave.

      Little Molas Lake Campground

Busy campground on the Colorado Trail

Nice little campground on the Million Dollar Highway heading between Durango and Silverton, with the Colorado Trail passing right through the campground. There is a main road with sites spread out over a few close ridges, and a small loop that ends in at the day use parking and vault toilet. It seemed that the “group” sites were closest to the vault toilets next to the day use parking, which could present an issue as it was very busy. The “group” sites were very crowded, which could have been just too many people in a small area, or the area could have been just too small.  Sites further away from the toilets were more spacious, but no site was huge. All sites seemed to have good hammocking trees. It seemed the best sites were the ones closest to the entrance: the parking pads were up next to the road and the tent pads and fire rings were set back from the road down a steepish grade. This was a great spot to camp as a home base for hiking the Colorado Trail. There are great trails heading out of the campground in both directions. The usual picnic tables and fire pits could be found at all sites we looked at.

      Ouray KOA Holiday

      Quaint and quiet

Stayed at a small back-in site with 30 amp & electric in our camper van. The site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Loved that they had a store, laundry room, and firewood for sale. The store closes at 5:00 & we arrived at 5:10 but the office lady still checked us in and made sure we had firewood. The campground is well-maintained and clean.

Elk Ridge Campground — Ridgway State Park

      Very nice

Nice campground with spacious sites. Concrete pads under the picnic table and fire pits. Water access nearby. Bathrooms were super clean and the showers were nice and hot. Laundry facilities available. We stayed on D-183 and had a nice view of the mountains and the lake. Definitely one of the best state park campgrounds in Colorado.

    Guide to Powderhorn

Cabin accommodations near Powderhorn, Colorado range from basic to modern units at elevations around 8,000 feet in the Gunnison area. Weather can change rapidly, with nighttime temperatures dropping significantly even in summer months. Most cabin rentals operate seasonally from May through October, with limited availability during winter.

    What to do

Playground activities: Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch offers an entertaining mini golf course that appeals to visitors of all ages. "We had such a relaxing stay at Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch! One of the major highlights for us was the amazing pool setup—both indoor and outdoor pools were clean, well-maintained, and perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring," notes Jessica S.

Horseback riding: Some cabin properties arrange riding opportunities during summer months. At Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch, guests can enjoy equestrian activities among other recreation options. "There is so much to do on the ranch such as swim in the pools, play games, horseback ride, etc," shares Eliza S.

Fishing access: Many cabins provide relatively easy access to fishing spots. "Located near Blue Mesa Reservoir, Thousand Trails Gunnison offers breathtaking views and outdoor activities like fishing, boating, and hiking," explains Paulina B. Most fishing requires appropriate Colorado licenses, available online or at local retailers.

    What campers like

Mountain views: The elevated terrain creates scenic vantage points from many cabins. At Sapinero Village Campground, "The views of Blue Mesa reservoir were stunning. The park is tiered, so each site has a wonderful view," according to Lisa M.

Community spaces: Several properties feature common areas where guests can gather. "We loved the lodge area to hang out and connect with other campers, and the game room was a smash hit with our two sons- pool table, Jenga, Uno, shooting hoops!" reports Amber J. about her experience at Sapinero Village Campground.

Variety of accommodation types: From rustic to fully-equipped, cabin options vary significantly. "We stayed in The Loft above the lodge (so we did not camp), and we just loved it. It was so quiet and comfortable with the two beds, living area, kitchen, and bathroom," explains Lisa M. about her stay at Sapinero Village.

    What you should know

Limited connectivity: Cell service and internet access can be inconsistent in cabin areas near Powderhorn. At Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch, "The only thing I have against Thousand Trails Blue Mesa is the lack of internet. To have internet, you must have Starlink or a satellite dish. The campground's internet service is next to nothing, unless you're inside one of their office buildings," warns Vernon G. S.

Seasonal considerations: Most cabins operate within specific seasonal windows. "Outdoor closes and activities die down after beginning of September," cautions Paulina B. at Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch. Plan cabin stays accordingly, especially if you want full access to amenities.

Supply runs: While some cabin properties have small stores, major shopping requires travel. "Gunnison has a Safeway, Local Grocery and Walmart. The Walmart is not a super store and has very little in the way of groceries. Local Grocers and Safeway are your better choice for food," advises Kevin H.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Children typically enjoy water activities during warmer months. At Mountain Time RV Park & Cabins, visitors appreciate water recreation opportunities. "We loved our stay here! There is an indoor and outdoor pool, playground, cool mini golf set up, horses, and a lake for kids to fish in!" shares Katie B.

Evening activities: Board games and indoor options help when weather turns. "The bathrooms and showers were clean and nice. It's also in a great location with proximity to black canyon of the gunnison national park, crested butte, and so many lakes," reports Eliza S.

Wildlife encounters: Many cabin locations feature wildlife viewing opportunities. At Dry Gulch Campground cabins, the natural setting supports wildlife viewing. "This CG is the opposite world from Elk Creek CG. Lots of large cottonwood trees shade all the sites. Best suited for the tenter crowd or small campers," notes Greg L.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup quality: RVers who bring units to cabin-inclusive campgrounds report varying experiences with utility connections. At Gunnison KOA, facilities meet expected standards. "Very friendly and helpful staff. Clean showers and bathrooms. Nice grassy sites that come complete with a cow who is as cute as can be!!" says Michelle A.

Site spacing: Some properties pack RVs and cabins closely together. "For a private RV campground, it's great. Sites are larger than many campgrounds. Laundry, bathrooms, and showers are clean. The staff is very friendly. Most sites are shaded.... a real treat in this area," reports Lisa K.

Weather preparation: The area experiences significant temperature fluctuations. "No frills campground. No water. No amenities. But nice big shade trees to help give you some cover. There is trash and bathrooms. Make sure you bring bug spray, the mosquitoes can be relentless," advises Thomas B.
