What to do
Hiking with lake access: Indian Paintbrush Campground at Bear Creek Lake Park offers extensive trail systems with water activities. "Loved the hiking and biking trails. Beautiful lake for swimming and paddle sports. Will definitely be returning for the archery and horseback riding," notes Joshua H.
Explore mining towns: From Denver West-Central City KOA, visitors can easily reach historic mining settlements. "This KOA is perched up in between the most beautiful outlooks. The staff is so kind and welcoming, and the amenities are well kept!" explains Saige M.
Paddling on Wellington Lake: Castle Mountain Recreation Area restricts motorized boats, creating calm waters for water sports. "Great place to take the camper and kayaks. Kayaking, SUPs, fishing, hiking," says Bryan J. The lake remains a favorite for paddleboarders who appreciate the no-motor policy.
Mountain biking: Trails throughout Golden Gate Canyon State Park accommodate various skill levels with both technical and beginner-friendly routes. "The bike trails are awesome and a sweet pond tucked in the meadow to fish at," according to Meghan H.
What campers like
Quiet mountain location: Reverend's Ridge Campground at Golden Gate Canyon State Park provides a secluded mountain setting. "Loop E (electric hookups) is very spacious and well laid out. Every campsite is a pull thru allowing you situate anywhere along the paved area to best suit your needs. Mostly level, fire rings, and very large metal picnic tables," reports Dennis G.
Proximity to Red Rocks: Indian Paintbrush Campground offers convenient access for concertgoers. "Super clean campground. Close to Red Rocks and Denver. You have to drive a bit to get to the lake. Some nice hiking and biking trails off the campground. Beautiful views of the mountains," shares Stacy M.
Urban escape feeling: Despite being near Denver, many cabins offer surprisingly remote atmospheres. "While this campground is minutes from the city and seconds from a highway, at night you feel like you are in a quiet, mountain campsite with stars to gaze for days," explains Kandisa S.
Fishing opportunities: Multiple parks in the area maintain stocked fishing ponds. "Dude's Fishing Hole is my dog's favorite place in the world. We love GGC especially the Forgotten Valley hike. Feed the fish at the ranger station," advises Mikaela R.
What you should know
Seasonal closures: Many cabin facilities operate on limited schedules. Bear Creek Lake Park's season runs "April 1 to October 31," while other facilities maintain year-round operations with winter access challenges.
Reservation requirements: Most cabin sites require advance booking, especially during summer months. "Golden Gate Canyon SP is absolutely gorgeous! We loved the experience at the park, the trails are great and the views are wonderful. The drive up can be a bit breathtaking, but it can be done!" notes Minette and Ron G.
Weather preparedness: Aspen Meadow Campground and other mountain locations experience rapid weather changes. "Was a beautiful drive to the park. About 30 to 40mins off I-70 depending on how you drive. Highly recommend and has become one of my new favorite spots to visit again. Phone service wise Verizon was very patchy but sprint seemed to have 2-3 bars," reports Allan.
Site spacing: Castle Mountain Recreation Area cabins offer variable privacy levels. "Wellington Lake was nice and clean in early May. The restrooms were well-maintained. They have a trail with waterfalls as well as a large lake," mentions Lisa O.
Tips for camping with families
Water activities for kids: Standley Lake Regional Park offers rentals and safe waters. "I don't know how you could not like a place with a huge lake that bald eagles nest beside. With a rookery, this is the spot for bird enthusiasts!" explains Blair S.
Kid-specific amenities: Several campgrounds feature playgrounds and children's programs. "Base Camp at Golden Gate Canyon is everything you expect it to be and more from the overview! I have 3 children and not one of them wanted to leave!" shares Anne B.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many sites offer chances to see local fauna. "The campground and lake are very nice. There are several campsites that sit right on the water. There are also campsites that sit further up on the mountain. You get lake views from almost everywhere," notes Linda D.
Beginner-friendly options: For first-time cabin campers, certain sites provide extra amenities. "This was my first backpacking experience and I couldn't recommend it more for first timers. There is a designated pad for your tent, a bear locker and even an outhouse all nearby," describes Anthony N.
Tips from RVers
Electric hookup quality: RV sites at Reverend's Ridge Campground feature reliable connections. "Reverend ridge is a favorite of ours. Plenty of space between sites, electricity. Wooded and scenic," confirms Henry K.
Leveling requirements: Several campgrounds require preparation for uneven terrain. "We stopped in after an afternoon of driving. The sites were level and very clean, hookups were easy (nice threaded, tidy black/grey water), lots of Aspen trees between the sites, but still a bit close together," explains Jason G. at Base Camp.
Seasonal water access: Many RV sites disconnect water during winter freezes. "Yes Mountain High!! 8100' high. 7 miles off I-70 at Idaho Springs. 25 miles into outskirts of Denver. Our space was a big rig space on concrete pad with ample seating, a table, a fire pit, and a propane grill stove. It was still reaching freezing at night and so we didn't hook up our water," advises Shari from Denver West-Central City KOA.
Road access considerations: Some cabin and RV sites require careful driving. "The only downside was the road to get there. It wasn't maintained very well and there was only room for one vehicle at some points," warns Linda D. about Wellington Lake.
