Clear Creek Reservoir campground offers multiple pet-friendly dispersed camping options along the Arkansas River. Dogs are allowed throughout the area with standard leash requirements. Sites located farther down the reservoir road, about 7 miles from the entrance, provide more privacy and scenic spots right by the creek or water. Some campers report finding excellent shaded areas with established fire rings that accommodate both tents and RVs. The campground features vault toilets but no other amenities such as trash collection, water hookups, or electric service. Clear Creek gets very crowded on weekends when barking dogs and generator noise can become problematic for those seeking quiet.

Forest Road 130 and Twin Lakes dispersed camping areas provide additional free pet-friendly options near Granite. Both allow dogs and offer more secluded camping experiences. The Stone Cabin campground, approximately 10 minutes from Buena Vista, provides camping right alongside the Arkansas River with spectacular riverside sites perfect for dogs who enjoy water access. Most sites have fire grills rather than fire pits. Wildlife is abundant throughout the area, so proper food storage is essential when camping with pets. Temperature variations can be significant, with cold nights even during summer months. The Colorado Trail passes through several camping areas, offering excellent hiking opportunities for campers and their dogs. During peak summer months, arriving midweek substantially improves chances of finding an ideal spot with adequate space for pets.

      Cascade (colorado)

      One of our favorites

This is probably my family's favorite area to camp in Colorado. Off the beaten path enough that traffic is minimal. But nice and close to some great four wheel and off roading areas.

      Salida RV Resort

Very nice new RV park. Right on the Arkansas River, great mountain views.

Very clean, large level spots with gravel and plenty of room in between RVs.  Great location, close to Salida and hiking & biking trails.  Directly on the Arkansas River -- river view spots are very nice and all spots have a view of the mountains, there's a bit of road noise from nearby highway.  Friendly staff, nice clubhouse with showers, pool table & fitness center, there's a small dog park and pickleball courts.  Direct access to Arkansas River for kayaks and small boats (walk down to river, can't drive there).  Campground internet was spotty but cell service is great so internet is very good if you have a hot spot.  Highly recommended, my only complaint is there's no pool or hot tub.

      Road 240 - Dispersed

      A hidden paradise

This spot is one of the best kept secrets for dispersed camping in Colorado. The road has plenty of camping spots all the way up to the lake. Most spots are wooded and offer plenty of shade. We were lucky enough to end up right along the river. If you keep driving down the road, you will end up at a stunning alpine lake basin that offers plenty of hiking. High clearance vehicle is necessary to get down this road.

      Forest Road 272 Dispersed Camping

Fire Ban Restrictions - Stage 1. No open fires allowed.

As of April 2026, Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect for all National Forest System lands, including dispersed campsites in Pike-San Isabel National Forests (Browns Creek area). That means NO open campfires are allowed in dispersed sites, even in existing rock rings. Please check all fire ban restrictions in areas where you might be camping in Colorado due to the state’s significant drought. Nationally, 85-90% of wildfires are caused by human activity. “If you light it, be prepared to fight it”.

      Oh Be Joyful Campground

      Perfect weather in October!

Drove out with some friends from Kansas in early October this year and the views and weather was Amazing! Campsite has “fees” through an honor system so you no host to worry about you come and camp as you go here. Place has fire pits bathrooms! One of my favorite spots to camp in Colorado so far.

      Gore Creek Campground

So good, I don’t want to tell you about it.

Gore Creek Campground is a true gem of the National Forest Service. If you are looking for a great boondocking location that is close to great trails and breathtaking views, this just might be the place for you. The entrance to the campground is ~2 miles off of I-70 Exit 180 on Bighorn Road. Only 10 minutes from Vail Village and 25 minutes from Frisco.

We stayed in Site #8, which provided plenty of room for our 22’ travel trailer and pickup. The sites each have a large picnic table and fire ring.

Pit toilets are spread through the campground and were very clean and well maintained. The campground hosts do a great job of keeping everything tidy and looking great. They also have bundles of firewood for sale for $7 at their site just inside the entrance to the campground.

I can’t say enough about this place. It’s probably my favorite spot to camp in Colorado. I almost didn’t post this review for fear of the secret getting out.

      Parry Peak — Psicc

Great campground, close to the pass and lots of hiking.

Some spots close to the road but it gets quiet at night as Independence pass is not heavily trafficked after dark.  It is in a great location, close to Twin Lakes but also all the hiking up the pass.  All first come first serve.  Pets are allowed, we had our dog with us.

    Guide to Granite

Dispersed camping options near Granite, Colorado cluster primarily along the Arkansas River basin at elevations between 8,000-9,200 feet. Summer temperatures typically range from 45-80°F with significant overnight cooling even in July and August. The area receives most of its precipitation during afternoon thunderstorms from July through early September, making morning departures ideal for hiking and outdoor activities.

    What to do

Hiking the Colorado Trail sections: Access multiple segments of the Colorado Trail directly from Twin Lakes Dispersed Camping - Site 2 West. "The Colorado trail/CDT passes close by and was a great evening hike from our camp," notes Lyds F. The trailheads are clearly marked and offer routes suitable for day hikes ranging from 2-8 miles.

Mountain summit attempts: Many campers use dispersed sites as base camps for nearby 14er climbs. "We stayed here one night before some 14er hiking the next morning," explains Ryan L. about Chaffee County Road 390 Dispersed. For experienced hikers, Mt. Elbert trailhead is accessible from several camping areas and provides Colorado's highest summit opportunity.

Fishing in local reservoirs: Clear Creek and Twin Lakes reservoirs offer trout fishing opportunities throughout summer months. "Options for paddle boarding or fishing here, desert-like but surrounded by mountains," reports Katie H. Early morning and evening hours typically yield better catches when water temperatures are cooler.

    What campers like

Natural swimming spots: Creek access points provide cooling options during hot summer days. At Forest Road 130, Hillary B. explains: "We woke up to Mt Elbert every morning and took a few foraging trips about the site just to see." Several campsites along water routes feature small swimming holes ideal for supervised children.

Cell signal for remote work: Unlike many backcountry sites, several campgrounds maintain usable connectivity. "I work remotely so sadly cell signal is something I look for and I've had consistent reception here. It's usually 5G, sometimes drops to LTE but still usable," notes Zelia V. about Forest Road 130. Verizon service tends to be strongest throughout the region.

Privacy between sites: Many dispersed areas offer significant spacing between campsites. At Turtle Rock Campground, Megan V. mentions: "The trees are just the right size to provide shade and hang hammocks. There is a rock climbing trail and beautiful views of the peaks near by for some daytime entertainment." Most sites feature natural barriers creating separation from neighbors.

    What you should know

Road conditions vary significantly: Access to prime camping spots often requires navigating unpaved roads. "The road can get rough, and is narrow in one spot. Accessible with smaller trailers. Larger RVs should stick to areas nearer the dam before the road narrows into the trees," warns Timothy N. about Twin Lakes Dispersed.

Weekend crowds impact experience: Popularity peaks Friday through Sunday during summer months. "This area is very crowded on summer weekends, so get there early for the best spots. Lots of dust from the passing vehicles," continues Timothy N. Thursday arrival substantially improves site selection options.

Bear activity requires proper food storage: Wildlife encounters remain common throughout the region. "Bears were reported to be active in the area but we didn't see any," reports Drew B. All food, scented items, and pet supplies should be secured in hard-sided vehicles or proper bear canisters overnight and when sites are unattended.

    Tips for camping with families

Accessible swimming areas: Several sites offer water access suitable for supervised children. "We found a great spot along the brush that had trails directly to the water. This spot was awesome for kids! There was an awesome little swimming hole, maybe 5 feet deep with a little make shift diving board already in place," shares Amanda L. about camping along Chaffee County Road 390.

Dog-friendly environment: Most dog friendly campgrounds near Granite allow pets with proper supervision. "Easily one of my favorite places to camp in Colorado! It's a must stay every year for me. Killer views, great hiking, beach days and a peaceful location," notes Troy W. about Twin Lakes Primitive, highlighting why many families with dogs return annually.

Weather preparedness essential: Temperature fluctuations require layered clothing and proper shelter. "This campground is a high altitude spot - make sure you drink LOTS of water and bring the appropriate gear for unpredictable weather. It can get cold some nights, bundle up!" advises Mackenzie B.

    Tips from RVers

Arrival timing affects site quality: Limited level sites fill quickly during peak season. "If you have a 4x4 vehicle and can make your way toward the trailhead for south Mt Elbert, there are some amazing spots. A few spots allow you to pull off and set up a tent with great views," explains Brielle E. about Twin Lakes Dispersed Camping - Site 2 West.

Generator etiquette matters: Noise carries throughout camping areas, especially at night. "We ended up leaving around 9pm because there were 3-4 campfires around us, one super smoky and we have a baby," notes Lyds F. Many campgrounds have 10PM quiet hours though enforcement varies in dispersed areas.

Water conservation planning: No hookups means bringing adequate fresh water. "There is no water hook ups or electric and no phone service," notes Wandering W. Most RVers recommend 1-2 gallons per person per day minimum plus additional water for dogs.
