Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests

Black Canyon Dispersed Camping provides free pet-friendly camping opportunities near Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park local campsites. Located in Montrose, Colorado, this dispersed camping area allows dogs and other pets with minimal restrictions. Sites feature fire rings with no facilities such as toilets, trash collection, or drinking water. Campers access primitive sites via drive-in or walk-in routes suitable for both tent and RV camping. The South Rim Campground in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park also accommodates pets and offers more amenities including drinking water, electric hookups, and sanitary facilities. The first few dispersed camping sites are accessible with regular vehicles, but reaching the more secluded spots with better views requires high-clearance or 4WD vehicles, especially when roads become muddy.

Dog owners frequently use Black Canyon Dispersed Camping as a convenient base for exploring pet-friendly trails in the national park. The area sits approximately 5 minutes from the Black Canyon entrance, allowing early morning access to beat crowds. Camping with pets requires preparation as the terrain contains cacti and sometimes uneven ground that can challenge tent placement. Cell service remains limited but available with 1-2 bars of Verizon LTE reported in most areas. The dispersed area extends along multiple forest service roads with sites ranging from roadside spots to more private locations tucked among pinyon pines. Wildlife sightings include deer, though bear activity appears minimal according to park literature.

    Gunnison KOA

    Beautiful Setting and Family Friendly

The Gunnison KOA is in a beautiful setting with large trees that is about 75 yards from the river. The spaces are generously sized, although the camping sites could use power outlets. They are very kid and pet friendly; and have a dog park. There is a friendly donkey who roams the grounds, so make sure your 4 legged friends are okay around bigger animals. The bathrooms are clean and functional. The same could not be said for the dishwashing station that is outdoors. It is in horrible condition, including a dripping faucet. Also, be aware that you are very close to the river and there is a mosquito and moisture problem. Even with these minor problems, this is still a great place to stay.

    Telluride Town Park Campground

    Telluride Town Park

This campsite is great if you want to do Telluride on a budget - it's free. It's right next to the town and is used a lot for Telluride's summer festivals. Its more than a campground it is also where a lot of town events are held and also has sports venues. There's also grills, bathrooms, picnic tables, a dog park, and a pond. Unless you're at a festival, the campground isn't where you will want to spend your time though. The campground is very close to Bridal Veil Falls, a huge free fall waterfall. You can drive or hike up to it, and climb around on the rocks and get blasted by cold water from the falls. It's huge. There's also a bunch of awesome hikes around Telluride - the San Juans are my favorite part of Colorado.

    Owl Creek Pass

    Breathtaking but NO

This was such a magically beautiful location. The aspens were amazing, the surrounding forest, flowing river and waterfalls, and sweeping mountain scapes were breathtaking. Why only two stars? Well, first off, our campsite seemed too perfect to still be open, and it was. Unbeknownst to us, we were the only place for miles that you can get cell service, so we had 20-30 “visitors” a day drive up to our little round about spot to get a phone call or text out. That’s more people I see a day than even my own neighborhood and far more than I want to see on my outdoor exhursion.

Ok, so we picked a bad spot.... but every place we hiked and drove was overrun with cattle. Within an hour of our arrival and set up, cows began to wander over, pooping all over the place. Cows were EVERYWHERE- all the way up to Silver Jack reservoir and further. That made the flies worse than normal. They were the only “wildlife” we saw in four days... 15-20 at a time... hundreds overall. In all of my years camping in Colorado, I’ve never experienced this. Every camper we encountered complained about it. I loved the views, but I’ll never be back to camp.

    Riverbend RV Park & Cabins

    Riverbend Montrose Colorado

Book it Now! This RV park will fill up quickly. Riverbend is a beautiful park in a fantastic location. What sets this park apart from others is the owners and camp hosts. The park's owners are exceptional; everything they do is done for the benefit of their guests.

     A few examples include oversized RV sites, WiFi, and they even love dogs because they have an off-lease dog park. The camp hosts here are fantastic;

Rob and Becky and Kirby and Robin are two couples that truely went above and beyond. They are simply the best!

We had such a great time we invited several of our friends to come down and rent a cabin, which they all did, and we had an absolute blast! The most amazing trip ever!

    Ouray Riverside Resort

    Beautiful Ouray

Nestled in a valley with beautiful view next to Uncompahgre River with wonderful walking path. Gravel parking right off hwy 550. Laundry, showers, restaurant. Primitive cabins and fully equipped cabins. Very friendly staff. Pet friendly. Close to uptown shopping and eating & grocery store. Pull thru and back in sites. Overflow parking for extra vehicles for a charge. Down side-you have to trailer to trailheads for SXS riding. Most tail heads are small parking areas but the riding in the mountains is priceless. Been here twice, same site and would go again.

Guide to Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests

Black Canyon Dispersed Camping offers a free, primitive camping option just 5 minutes from Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park's entrance. The dispersed sites spread across multiple forest service roads in Montrose, Colorado, with spots ranging from roadside locations to more secluded areas among pinyon pines. Camping conditions vary significantly with seasonal weather, as the access roads become challenging when wet or muddy.

What to do

Fishing at Crawford State Park: Iron Creek Campground at Crawford State Park provides excellent access to reservoir fishing. "The lake is bright with turquoise waters where you can do canoeing, Kayaking and Paddle boarding. It Is also open for powerboats, sailboats and jet skis," notes Fabio O., adding that "fishing is great with catch and release on the river and the usual quota for the lake."

Hiking from North Rim Campground: North Rim Campground offers direct access to several trails. "There is also the trail to exclamation point and the top of Green mountain that begins at the ranger station just down the road if you are into hiking or trail running," shares Jon H. The campground also features "a nice hike from the campground to the visitor center and around down a little ways into a canyon," according to Charles C.

Mountain biking at Ridgway State Park: Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Campground features excellent biking opportunities. "All of these campgrounds are walk in, tent only, and well treed. They are a bit of an uphill hike from the river so a very basic mountain bike can make getting to and from camp as well as around the rest of the park is a good luxury," explains Zachary K.

What campers like

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Iron Creek Campground at Crawford State Park offers frequent wildlife encounters. "Lots of fish jumping and can watch beavers swimming in and out of the marsh in the evening," reports Reames C. The wildlife viewing extends to birds at the Black Canyon area as well.

Stargazing conditions: The high elevation and limited light pollution create excellent night sky viewing. "Absence of light pollution means awesome night skies!" writes Deborah D. about South Rim Campground, where the 8,200-foot elevation provides excellent stargazing conditions.

Dog-friendly trails and campgrounds: The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests feature numerous pet-friendly campgrounds. At Black Canyon Dispersed Camping, "we were surprised to find that the campground was right off the main road, 1 mile from the entrance to the park. Could not have been more convenient," writes Kat P., who also saw "bunnies and a deer carcus so wild life present."

What you should know

Weather variability at high elevations: South Rim Campground sits at 8,200 feet elevation, causing significant temperature fluctuations. "Be prepared for any type of weather. We had a wild thunder, lightning and wind storm with violent downdrafts—typical for this country," warns Deborah D. This applies to most campgrounds in the region.

Road conditions for dispersed camping: Access to more remote sites requires appropriate vehicles. "Some of the roads were really rutted out, but we were lucky and everything was dry so we were able to get thru in my forester. There are some spots at the beginning of the property but there are more if you follow the dirt road back another two miles or so," explains Grace S. about the Black Canyon Dispersed area.

Reservation requirements vary by campground: While dispersed areas remain first-come, first-served, many established campgrounds require advance booking. "All reservations for all 75 available sites must be made through recreation.gov in advance (6 month rolling). We've had multiple reports from guests saying that they saw something about C-loop being first-come, first-serve. That's just not the case," clarifies Sky B. about South Rim Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities at Ridgway State Park: Dakota Terraces Campground offers excellent family amenities. "This park is a great place for families because there is so much to do, from the endless bike trails to fishing and water access. All of the sites are large and have plenty of space from the next site," writes Jason S. The park also features swimming areas for children.

Fishing opportunities for children: Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Campground includes stocked fishing ponds perfect for teaching kids. "There are a couple ponds nearby that are heavily stocked with hungry rainbow trout. We saw quite a few kids leave with their limit of 9-11" stockers. There is also a fish cleaning station at the bathrooms that is VERY well equipped making this an ideal place to teach kids to love fishing," shares Zachary K.

Safety considerations: Some dispersed camping areas near Black Canyon may have wildlife concerns. "We did find a few deer legs left behind, so keep an eye out for Mountain Lion," cautions Grace S. about the Black Canyon Dispersed area. Bear boxes are provided at many campgrounds for food storage.

Tips from RVers

Electric hookup availability: Riverbend RV Park in Montrose offers full hookups for RVs. "What sets this park apart from others is the owners and camp hosts. The park's owners are exceptional; everything they do is done for the benefit of their guests. A few examples include oversized RV sites, WiFi, and they even love dogs because they have an off-lease dog park," explains Billy M.

Site selection for larger vehicles: At South Rim Campground, RV site selection requires careful planning. "Pay attention to the driveway length figures in rec.gov as they are pretty accurate," advises Sky B., who adds that "Electric sites (22 of them for $34/night) have brand new 20/30/50 amp service."

Leveling challenges: Many campsites in the area require leveling equipment. "Needed all our levelers as the site is sloped downhill," notes Ursula about Dakota Terraces Campground at Ridgway State Park, a common challenge throughout the region's campgrounds due to the mountainous terrain.
