Several RV parks accommodate motorhomes near Crestone with diverse amenities and site configurations. Sand Dunes Recreation offers full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections for RVs on level sites. Royal Gorge RV Resort & Cabins maintains 125 year-round sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service options. Cool Sunshine RV Park features big-rig friendly pull-through sites with 50-amp electrical hookups, though fires are not permitted on the premises. RV sites at these parks typically include picnic tables and trash service, with varying pad surfaces. "The spaces are long and level and each contains full hookups, a large patch of grass, aspen trees, and best of all great views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains."

Seasonal considerations affect availability throughout the San Luis Valley region. Monarch Spur RV Park operates from May through November with 43 developed sites, while parks like Haggards RV Campground remain open year-round. Most RV parks in the area offer sanitary dump stations, though Sangre Vista RV Sites notably lacks this amenity. Cell service varies significantly across the region, with stronger signals in valley locations and limited connectivity in mountain-adjacent parks. Shower facilities are available at most established RV parks, but travelers should note that Sangre Vista RV Sites does not provide showers or toilets. Navigation to certain parks requires careful planning, as one reviewer noted: "The gravel roads and store parking area are in dire need of maintenance; buckle up." Pet policies generally permit animals at most RV facilities in the area.

      North Crestone Creek Campground

      Needs Work

The North Crestone Creek Camground is just a few miles uphill from Crestone Colorado. Crestone is a small artist village nestled in the pines at the base of mountain range. Crestone is worth visiting on a day trip. It’s about 15 east off the main highway and has some nice artist galleries and gift shops. The campground was a disappointment. It’s very overused and in need of some basic maintenance. The sites are overgrown and facilities are unkept. The mosquitoes are really bad in the summer season. You could hardly go outside due to the swarms. The sites are positioned along the creek up the mountain. They have pit toilets, picnic tables and fire rings like many other NFS Sites. The sites was dusty and hot even in the shaded areas. I can’t recommend this one unless you are out of options in Crestone and come after the bugs are gone.

      Aspen Acres Campground

      Well maintained & staffed

This was a delightful experience for us. There are sites for every type of camper: tent, trailer, RV, glamping and cabins. This is a somewhat small but well maintained private campground with lots of simple amenities. All is the wooded back-in sites have full hook-ups (30A) and there are pull-thru sites (Ithink they are still 30A). The center wooded area is perfect for tents. A small dog park gave our girls the chance to run free for a little. There is a shower house with bathrooms that are well maintained. Trash is kept tidy and didn’t smell even on the 97 degree day. Very easy to access but no road noise (at least not at our site).

We have a 26’ trailer and stayed in site 18. It was near the end of the row and relatively quiet. We only wish we had a longer power cable. (Our next purchase!) Our port is at the back and the outlet was way up front. To reach, we had to set up near the front of the site which limited our parking. Just pointing that out for others who might be ill prepared too.

We were too far away to take advantage of WiFi which is fine, we just wandered up near the office to check our texts once daily. It might be more accessible if you are located closer to the office. No cell service for Verizon. Personally, I was happy to be unplugged for a couple of days!

Although we had a fire ban in effect, we were able to rent a propane fire pit from the office. Be super cautious and check fire restrictions for Custer County. (http://oem.custercountygov.com/firecon.htm)

Aspen Acres has a lot more staff than I expected and they patrolled frequently. Very helpful and friendly.

5 minutes from Bishops Castle and 10 minutes from Lake Isabel ($7 day use fee). Easy drive up from I-25 but fairly steep in spots if that is problematic.

      We will stay again!

      Salida RV Resort

Very nice new RV park. Right on the Arkansas River, great mountain views.

Very clean, large level spots with gravel and plenty of room in between RVs.  Great location, close to Salida and hiking & biking trails.  Directly on the Arkansas River -- river view spots are very nice and all spots have a view of the mountains, there's a bit of road noise from nearby highway.  Friendly staff, nice clubhouse with showers, pool table & fitness center, there's a small dog park and pickleball courts.  Direct access to Arkansas River for kayaks and small boats (walk down to river, can't drive there).  Campground internet was spotty but cell service is great so internet is very good if you have a hot spot.  Highly recommended, my only complaint is there's no pool or hot tub.

      Del Norte City Park

      Only One Night Stay Allowed

This is an interesting spot to stay the night. It is right on the river and there are 1-5 sites with a playground, bathrooms, bbq pit, and a dump station. I'm not sure who takes care of this park but they have done a great job!

It is not pet friendly so keep them on a leash and walk them off property.

It is a free site but you can only stay 1 night max. It is not for tents but it will fit RV's and campervans just fine. Maximum RV length is 35 feet.

The best thing about this site is that it is within walking distance of Three Barrel Brewing Company! Excellent beer and a legit pizza oven!

      Mosca Campground

      Beautiful view

One of few places to camp close to Great Sand Dunes NP in winter months. Electric sites with semi-covered picnic table and fire pits. I think toliet were closed for the season but didn’t try. Colorado hunting/fishing license required for sites

      Alamosa KOA

      Friendly, Beautiful KOA in Alamosa

The Alamosa KOA was chosen by our family because we like to have the option for swimming at the end of a hard day of play in the National Parks. We made our reservation for our site in March, a mere three months before our mid-week, June 7 arrival.

This KOA has a nice sized heated, outdoor pool with reasonable hours, closing around 8:00 PM. The pool temperature was warm enough for even the adults to slip right into it. There is also a fantastic playground with updated equipment, including an elevated tunnel system that ends with safety slides. When you have a small child who loves to play, especially a special needs child, this is a big deal! Other amenities include showers and laundry facilities (we did not use either but they looked nice). Wi-Fi is advertised, and the signal is available, but was not even fast or reliable enough to load photos from Instagram or Twitter. Streaming would be out of the question, but it would probably suffice for checking email.

One of the more unique benefits offered at this KOA include on-site Hunt Brothers Pizza and breadsticks. Not only can you get hot, fresh pizza here, made to order, but they will deliver it to your site! In addition, they deliver wood and ice. This site also offers a weekend pancake breakfast (seasonal).

The RV sites were leveled very well, and they have both 30-amp and 50-amp sites available. There are small shade trees scattered throughout the camping area, but they are still quite young and small. I read some previous reviews that felt the sites were too close together. Although there was little privacy, we have certainly had less room between sites than we had in Alamosa. Perhaps with slide-outs it might be more compact, but our little Starcraft fit in just fine. In addition to RV sites, there are tent sites and camping cabins available.

Our take-away from Alamosa KOA: The view from the campsite and the kindness and helpfulness of the hosts, the Martin family, make this a return-trip campground for sure! Any questions for us about this site? Leave them in the comments below!

      Sand Dunes Recreation

Awesome Soaking Pools & Proximity to Great Sand Dunes

This is our second time camping at The Hooper Pool (SandDunesPool.com). The first time we were in a C class in the boondocking area this time, we have a travel trailer with 30 amp & fresh water hooks. Water is the same hot water used to fill the pools, so it’s a little odd at first. Black water has to go to the dump site about 100 yards away. There are 10 RV sites with hooks, 3 rustic cabins, a lodge house, and an unimproved area that has RV pull through sites and tent pads. The unimproved areas are subject to high winds whereas the others are inside a wind break which works very well. Dogs are welcome in the camping areas but not in the pools. There are several pools filled with fish and frogs, but fishing (& frogging) aren’t allowed. We really like this site and plan to return at some point. Majestic views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains and the San Luis Valley. The night sky is amazing but the RV sites with hook ups have two parking lot type lights with white lights that stay in all night. Not sure if that’s a new development or if it has always been that way. Coin operated laundry and showers on site or pay for admission to The Greenhouse (21+) Pool and use the showers there.

    Guide to Crestone

RV camping near Crestone is popular throughout the San Luis Valley, with altitudes averaging 7,500-8,000 feet causing significant temperature drops at night. The area sits at the western base of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range and experiences a semi-arid climate with limited rainfall, affecting campground availability and conditions. Campgrounds in this region generally have fewer trees for shade compared to other Colorado camping areas.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: The Woods & River RV Park features easy access to the Rio Grande River with excellent trout fishing. "The fishing was awesome. The Rio Grande flows by and so do the trout. When we were there, fishing was free every 1st weekend of the month," notes one camper who found success casting from the river's edge.

Hot springs access: Natural hot springs offer a relaxing activity after exploring the mountains. "The pools are artesian hot springs. The pools are extremely kid friendly, and there are greenhouses with 21+ soaking and bar," reports a visitor to Sand Dunes Recreation, where camping guests receive discounted admission to the pools.

Wildlife viewing: Many campgrounds in the Crestone area provide opportunities to observe local wildlife. One camper at Haggards RV Campground shared, "So neat to see pronghorn in nearby fields as we sat drinking coffee." Other campers have reported spotting bighorn sheep on the cliffs near campsites.

    What campers like

River soundscapes: Sites near water features are particularly popular in the valley. At Woods & River RV Park, campers appreciate "a perfectly private front yard with a view" of the creek. Another reviewer at Bighorn Park enjoyed "Slept with the back open and fell asleep to the river sounds. Just heavenly!"

Mountain views: The panoramic mountain vistas earn consistent praise from reviewers. At Sangre Vista RV Sites, the small campground provides unobstructed views of the Sangre de Cristo range. Though lacking facilities like showers or toilets, the mountain scenery compensates for the basic amenities.

Clean facilities: Many travelers appreciate the well-maintained bathrooms and showers at established campgrounds. One camper at Royal Gorge RV Resort & Cabins noted, "The newly remodeled bathhouse and laundry facilities are beautiful!" While another at Monarch Spur RV Park mentioned, "Restrooms/showers/laundry very clean & well-kept."

    What you should know

Water quality variations: Some campgrounds have mineral-rich water systems that campers should be aware of. "If you have an rv and hook up to the water, it is fed from the hot springs so the water is always very warm. Didn't get to test out our hot water heater at this location!" reported a visitor at Sand Dunes Recreation.

Train noise: Several campgrounds near railroad tracks experience periodic noise disruption. A camper at Cool Sunshine RV Park warned, "Only issues are the active train tracks right next to the park and the narrow spaces," while another mentioned, "The train whistle is deafening and will rattle your teeth. 5 trains came by the one night."

Altitude considerations: The high elevation affects weather patterns and visitor comfort. A review of Monarch Spur RV Park noted, "High altitude means cool to cold nights," with temperatures often dropping below 50°F even in summer months. Proper cold-weather gear is essential year-round.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for campgrounds with specific features for children. Monarch Spur RV Park & Campground offers "a playground, kids games, a community area (even host occasional concerts) fishing, and a river running through." One family mentioned, "The kids didn't want to go anywhere they were happy just to hang out here at the campground."

Tent camping options: Families seeking more affordable options can find tent sites at several RV parks. "We had a great tent spot up on the hill with a great view of the valley behind. So it was a quiet tent spot to ourself, but 30 seconds down the hill for access to the amazing restroom and showers!" reported a family at Royal Gorge RV Resort & Cabins.

Rental equipment: Some parks offer equipment rentals that save families from bringing extra gear. A visitor to Sand Dunes Recreation noted, "They have a shop that sells items needed like bathing suits and sunscreen and treats and they also rent out toys and such." Another mentioned, "Sand boards are available to hire" for trips to nearby dunes.

    Tips from RVers

Road access challenges: Some RV parks have difficult approach roads requiring preparation. One RVer cautioned about Wilderness Expeditions RV Park, "Navigation to certain parks requires careful planning," while another advised taking it slow on gravel entrance roads common throughout the region.

Site layout considerations: The orientation and size of sites impact RV parking and comfort. At Cool Sunshine RV Park, "Back in spaces are close to each other. Pull throughs have more room between spaces." Another RVer noted at Haggards RV Campground, "The sites were large and plenty of room for my slideout and not too close to next site."

Seasonal availability: RV park operational seasons vary widely. Monarch Spur RV Park operates "from May 1 to November 1" with 43 developed sites, while others like Haggards RV Campground remain open year-round, providing consistent options regardless of travel timing.
