The Saratoga area offers camping opportunities in the Santa Cruz Mountains at elevations ranging from 500 to 3,000 feet. The region experiences temperature variations of 10-15 degrees between mountain campsites and valley floor locations. Winter camping requires preparation for overnight temperatures that can dip into the 30s, while summer days typically reach 70-85°F in most campgrounds.
What to do
Mountain biking trails: 15+ miles available at Mount Madonna County Park, where well-maintained paths range from beginner-friendly to advanced routes through redwood forests. "We did a 12 hour hike around the entire park. it was long but gorgeous!" according to one visitor at Ben Ries Campground.
Archery: 28-target course in the woods at Mount Madonna provides a unique alternative to hiking. "There is an archery trail with 28 targets on a trail through the woods. We were there 3 days in a row and did 20 of the 28. It's really pretty and a cool challenge," shares a camper at Mount Madonna County Park.
Historic sites exploration: 1-hour activity includes visiting the ruins of cattle baron Henry Miller's summer home. "Nice hikes right from the site or you can drive up to where the old homestead was and see some ruins," notes a camper. The area also contains remnants of early logging operations visible from several trails.
Wildlife observation: early morning optimal for viewing the white fallow deer enclosure at Mount Madonna, descendants of exotic animals from the Hearst mansion. "Near the ranger station there are pens with white fallow deer. They are descendants of the exotic zoo at William Randolph Hearst's mansion down the coast."
What campers like
Creek access for summer cooling: multiple spots in the heat of summer provide relief at dog friendly campgrounds near Saratoga. "There is a little trail that goes down to the River where you can find a neat little beach. It's a goofy little descent/climb to get there and out but worth it," shares a visitor at Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort.
Seasonal fog experience: unique redwood phenomenon creates a microclimate worth experiencing. "This is the only place I've seen the redwood trees harvest the fog and make their own rain, which is pretty cool. In the morning it's raining under the redwood trees but not under the madrone or tan oak trees, which is wild."
Waterfall hikes: 6-mile network of interconnected trails at Uvas Canyon County Park leads to multiple cascades. "To hike to each fall it's about 6ish miles with just a few hundred feet of total elevation gain. The trails are large and well defined for an very entry level experience."
Farm stands and local food: 20+ locations along Highway 1 near coastal campgrounds offer seasonal produce and artisan foods. "PCH is also dotted with farms and fruit stands, artisan pies, etc. The closest town is Pescadaro, and has a tiny main street with an excellent coffee shop, and grocery store with fresh baked pies, breads, jams, sauces."
What you should know
Limited cell coverage: prepare offline maps as most campgrounds have minimal to no service. "No cell service. Wifi provided, however it would go out late at night after 10 pm until the morning time," reports a camper. Some campgrounds offer wifi near the office or bathhouses only.
Temperature variations: pack layers as mountain locations can be 40 degrees cooler than nearby towns. "It is a lot colder here than on the valley floor. Prepare for it to be 40deg colder than Gilroy or San Jose. We weren't prepared & had to drive into town & buy more clothes!"
Code requirements: obtain after-hours access codes for gates and facilities at several parks. "You need codes for the gate after 7pm, the showers, and the RV dump and they don't volunteer that info, you have to ask," notes a visitor at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.
Ticks: check regularly when hiking in dog-friendly areas near Saratoga, particularly in spring and fall. "A really neat camping experience so close to the South Bay Area, but be aware that there are Lyme-carrying ticks in the area," cautions a camper.
Tips for camping with families
Wagon availability: time arrival strategically at parks with walk-in sites to secure transport equipment. "We were camping for 1 night and boy, was it crowded! Each and every group was fighting for the 'wagons' to haul stuff up the hike-in campsites," shares a visitor at Sanborn County Park.
Kid-friendly campground layout: choose sites 10 and 13 at Ben Ries Campground for connected family camping. "If I were to come back and want two large sites to connect, I would choose either 6 and 8 or 10 and 13."
Beach day trips: 20-30 minute drives from mountain campgrounds to coastal beaches provide activity variety. "The campground is very close to PCH/Highway 1 and the beaches are lovely," notes a camper. Several beaches offer tidepools suitable for younger children during morning low tides.
Bike-friendly campgrounds: paved roads advantage at some locations make them ideal for children learning to ride. "If you have littles the roads are paved so a scooter or bike could be fun," according to a visitor at New Brighton State Beach.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: bring blocks for uneven parking areas at several pet-friendly Saratoga area campgrounds. "If you plan to sleep in your car, you may want to take leveling blocks as I found the car parking spot to be not leveled at all."
Low clearance awareness: tree limb height restrictions apply at some redwood campgrounds. "We loved camping here with our 25ft camping trailer. There was plenty of room for it on site 105, however if it was any higher it would be hitting tree limbs."
Limited hookup availability: reserve early at the few parks offering electrical connections. "All kinds of camping here and it's a walk to the beach. Perfect for anyone," notes a visitor who appreciated the full-service options at Costanoa KOA.
Off-season advantage: significantly more space available during weekdays and winter months at normally crowded RV areas. "We stayed hear a couple years ago. I recommends rating here in the off season because you will basically have the place to yourself which makes it pleasant."
