    Modesto Reservoir

    Close to home

Love coming here anytime of the year. Not to far out from Modesto Or Riverbank. There is an archery range here which I still need to check it out. Price has gone up compare to past years but I like it due to it location. Certain time of the year it get pretty busy but we always camp on the far end of the campground where there is less people. Good area to use a paddle boat or canoe, water lately isn't that deep. Always see people fishing off shore but I haven't had any luck there. Very peaceful area except for waking up to geese near the campsite but they won't bother you at all. Boys like coming here to relax and go in the water right next to the campsite. There is also a 1 Mile Orienteering Course which is used to train my boys to use a compass. Bow fishing is also allow certain time of the year.

Here is the link to the Orienteering Course

Yosemite Pines RV Resort & Family Lodging

    Good Place for Kids

With a pool, petting zoo, a corral where they have a fire and s'mores followed by a movie, this is a great place to camp with the kids.

The showers are free and usually clean although on Saturday evening the campground was full and the bathrooms were dirty and out of TP.

There are tent sites, RV sites and cabins so something for everyone.

There were A LOT of stray cats on the property which kind of drove our dog crazy. But at least the campground is pet friendly.

If you plan to go into Yosemite NP, it's a long drive so plan accordingly. Our family really enjoys Rainbow Pools and Yosemite Pine's proximity to Rainbow Pools is part of why we stay here. The kids can jump and swim there and that's all they really want to do anyway so being close to that is key for us. So many of the places in the park where we used to get in the water do not allow swimming anymore.

    Coyote Valley RV Resort

Buttoned up, formal atmosphere RV resort

High priced. Nice people at desk. Damon who helped us park was very friendly. Almost entirely high-priced big rigs, some of whom seem settled here but it's clean, 'orderly,' very quiet. Rigid rules keep the order; nice that no political flags/signs allowed. 2 dog parks and lots of grassy areas to take for a walk. Showers in locker-room/bldg, bathrooms nice and clean. Green grass. Also has laundry with 2.50 wash and.25 dry for 8 min. Skunk wandered by site in the night. Cool train sounds from nearby tracks at night. Was probably the most convenient to San Jose, otherwise we likely would've been in mtns. and too far away from town for our needs at the time. Would not be a regular choice for us.

    Merced River Resort

    Shady spot

We stayed here for 5 weeks. Quiet park with lots of shady trees, a dog park and kids play area. River access is limited though because of the steep incline. No swimming spots but good fishing areas. Full hookups were much appreciated! The restrooms did not have working showers at the time hopefully that has been fixed.

French Camp RV Park and Golf Course

Quiet, clean and great dog parks!

I believe a lot of the people here are full-time. It’s a super sweet RV resort. It is very well-maintained, nicely landscaped, and they have some great dog parks. I came in after hours and the person managing the campground was kind enough to open up the office and get a space for me.

    Woodward Reservoir

Located just outside of oakdale. Great local camping.

Located just outside of oakdale, very similar to that of Modesto reservoir as it is managed by the same people. Shallow and warm water great for swimming and water sports. Has paved looped campgrounds and has all necessary hook ups for rv/motorhome camping. Boat docks and tables located near the water good for bbqing and having a relaxing weekend close to home but away from crowds of people. They do have late festivals in the fall so plan accordingly

Guide to Modesto

Modesto camping areas sit in California's Central Valley at approximately 90 feet above sea level. This region experiences hot, dry summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 100°F and mild winters with occasional fog. Most campgrounds near Modesto provide river or reservoir access, with water levels varying seasonally depending on snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada mountains.

What to do

River activities: Tuolumne River Ranch offers direct river access for fishing, swimming and relaxation. "Short hikes were very serene (just caution of poison ivy/oak?)" notes one reviewer who found the area "great for photo enthusiasts, especially Spring & Fall."

Watercraft recreation: Borrow complimentary boats at Cole Ranch where "One afternoon we took out one of the facilities canoes on the river and relaxed on the water all afternoon. Fishing was a success, what a bonus," according to a satisfied camper. The ranch provides paddleboards and kayaks with a signed waiver.

Swimming options: During summer months, Turlock Lake State Recreation Area provides cooling relief. "We hung out in the river all day located about 60ft from our campsite," reports one local camper who appreciates the convenience of riverside sites. Access varies between reservoir areas and river locations.

Golf and recreation: Some RV parks offer additional recreational facilities, with French Camp RV Park featuring an on-site golf course alongside "super sweet" grounds that are "very well-maintained, nicely landscaped."

What campers like

Communal facilities: Campers praise the shared amenities at Cole Ranch. "They even provide pots, pans, knives and other cooking utensils you may need," writes one reviewer. The communal kitchen setup allows for proper meal preparation without bringing extensive gear.

Shade protection: Given the Central Valley's intense summer heat, many visitors appreciate Turtle Beach for its "large grass site next to the water" where there's "lots of room to roam for people & pets." Turlock Lake offers "very shady campgrounds with big oak trees providing shade throughout the day and night."

Camp hosts: Personal attention from staff enhances the pet friendly camping experience near Modesto. At Cole Ranch, "Barry and his wife were amazing hosts! They made sure that we had everything we needed! Our dog Rocket lost his floatie frisbee in the water and they took time out of their day to buy him a new one so he can continue to play in the river!"

Swimming access: During hot summers, water proximity matters. "Woodward is our family go to place to camp in the summer heat. Lots of campsites with room for tents or RVs... Water feels good when it's 100+ degrees outside," notes one regular visitor.

What you should know

Temperature management: The Central Valley heat requires preparation. At Woodward Reservoir, one camper advises, "It tends to get chilly and windy occasionally. Make sure to bring sunblock! Some Roads are dirt so bring good water shoes or sandals."

Reservation requirements: Availability varies by season and location. "If you want hook ups and waterfront you have to make reservations on T-Island or Hackleberry Flats. Otherwise it is first come first serve for the other areas of the lake," notes a Woodward visitor.

Noise considerations: Some sites experience unavoidable noise disturbances. At Merced River Resort, campers mention "Loud with highway noise, factory next door and train goes through many times a night," requiring consideration for light sleepers.

Pet restrictions: While most campgrounds welcome pets, policies vary. Some limit pets to one per site, while others allow two. Leash requirements remain standard at all locations, typically six feet or less.

Tips for camping with families

River cooling: Families appreciate accessible water during hot months. At Turlock Lake State Recreation Area, "my favorite time is during the late hours of the evening when things quiet down and falling asleep to the sounds of crickets and the river flowing by."

Dog-friendly facilities: For families camping with pets near Modesto, California, Merced River Resort offers a "Large dog park" though one visitor notes timing matters as "a person in there had an aggressive dog so we couldn't use it."

Children's activities: Several campgrounds cater to families with designated play areas. Merced River Resort provides a "kids play area" alongside their dog park, creating separation between different recreational spaces.

Water safety: Reservoir edges can be steep at some locations. Parents should note that at Merced River Resort, "River access is limited though because of the steep incline. No swimming spots but good fishing areas."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Kit Fox RV Park, "I stayed here for one night in a 22' RV at one of the back-in sites for the shorter term stays." The reviewer notes, "It looks like most of the spots here are for pretty long term stays. There was plenty of space for short term, overnight campers."

Connectivity: For those needing to stay connected, "Spot comes with WiFi code, but there's plenty of cell service too" at Kit Fox RV Park, making it suitable for digital nomads with pets.

Parking configurations: French Camp RV Park offers "Plenty of room to leave RV hooked up to truck," which proves convenient for overnight stays when traveling through the region with pets.

Site leveling: RVers appreciate level sites for easier setup. At French Camp RV Park, visitors enjoy "Clean flat site. Pool and launderette good," noting the practical amenities that enhance comfort during Central Valley camping trips.
