CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

The Coachella Valley region provides several RV parks with full hookup options for various rig sizes. Emerald Desert RV Resort in Palm Desert features 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections on concrete pads suitable for larger motorhomes. Shadow Hills RV Resort maintains semi-private spaces with full hookups and picnic tables. "Pretty tight for larger RV's. We had a bit of a time getting our 36 ft RV situated so we could extend our slides," noted one camper about site spacing in the area. Thousand Trails Palm Springs operates seasonally from September to May with back-in sites on white sand surfaces that accommodate slideouts, while Oasis Palms RV Resort near Thermal can handle big rigs with both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service.

Advance reservations are recommended during winter months when snowbirds migrate to the desert region. Most parks provide sanitary dump stations on premises, though some visitors report additional fees for this service. Cell coverage varies significantly across the valley, with stronger signals near Palm Desert and Cathedral City. Pet owners will find designated dog areas at several facilities, including Shadow Hills which offers multiple small dog parks throughout the property. Temperatures regularly exceed 100°F during summer months, making pool access a priority for many RV travelers. According to one visitor, "The spots were very [tight] and there was not any grass for our dogs," highlighting the importance of researching specific amenities before booking extended stays. Road noise can be significant at parks near major highways, particularly those adjacent to Interstate 10.

Cottonwood Campground — Joshua Tree National Park

    Very nice but small sites

I really liked this campground. It’s one of the campground inside Joshua Tree NP and reservable through Recreation.gov. The sites are very private but they are small. Both the pull through and back in sites are small so this is definitely not for big rigs. We had A19 which is a pull through on the right side of the road and we had to go into the gravel part of the site so we would be in enough to open our driver side slide out. And we ended up pretty slanted as a result, but it fit. There are flush toilets that are very clean. This side of the park is very nice but most of the action is north of here and so we’re an hour drive to a lot of the hikes we want to do. No cell service at all.

    Thousand Trails Palm Springs

    Lovely TT RV Resort!!!

The is a beautiful Thousand Trails RV Resort in Palm Springs, California! The park is large, very spacious and so clean! The gorgeous Palm trees are a little bit of a parking hazard, but they were here before we were! 😊 And besides, they are so beautiful to look at every day. The park feels like a day on beach with white sand to park on in most spaces, towering Palm trees, and brightly colored tropical flowers. What a treat in the winter! We are here in November and December and daytime high’s are in the low 80’s. The park is split in half with one side 30 amp FHU and the other half 50 amp FHU. For TT members, there is not an additional charge for 50 amp. Quite a deal! There is plenty of room to get out and walk in this park, along with a nice dog park, playground, billiards room, swimming pool and spa, horseshoes, 8 pickle ball courts, many laundry rooms and restrooms, and community recreation room. The surrounding mountains ranges are pretty amazing, too. This park is close to it all in the Palm Springs area and everything is within a short drive. Joshua Tree National Park and the Salton Sea is just over a half hour away. The Thousand Trails Palm Springs RV Resort is perfect and we will definitely be visiting again!

    Shadow Hills RV Resort

    Urban Glamping during Covid

Shadow Hills RV Resort is a stellar urban RV resort with all the amenities. Full hookups, daily trash pickups at each site, cable tv, large level pads with privacy hedge, small dog parks scattered throughout, gated security, nice restrooms w/ showers (free). We were visiting family who were just a short bike ride away. Can be extremely windy here. Desert X environmental art installations are nearby.

    Thousand Trails Palm Springs

    Concrete Condo Camping

A well managed, well-kept park. Plenty of 50-amp sites, which usually means BIG rigs, are all back-in. The mature date palms and tight sites makes parking and manuevering diffecult for big rigs. Very lively community; lots of people out, kid playing. Proximity to Interstate 10 and railroad tracks makes it a bit noisy. But, it's NOT too bad. Plenty of TV stations along with 5G cell service. It's not in the rules so, I believe I'm allowed to wash my rig.

Palm Canyon Hotel & RV Resort

Family Friendly Borrego Springs full with hookups

A nice little (120 spaces or so) full hookup (30 and 50 amp) campground.  We paid $289 for 5 nights. Clean, well maintained and full of families.  Very close to downtown and Anza-Borrego Visitor Center.  Spaces are good size, no problems fitting our 30' toy hauler towed by F250, and the park is well laid out and easy to drive. Checkin was fast and easy.  There are full time residents, but they are in a different section.  We used it as a base for hiking and off-roading at Octotillo Wells (both recommended, but bring as much water as you  can carry). The property has an old west theme, and there is also a hotel , laundromat and restaurant. If you have never visited this part of California, be advised that the wind here can be VERY intense, especially at night.  Also note that Borrego Springs is a dark sky community, so please be respectful and remember to look up and enjoy the stars.

    Catalina Spa and RV Resort

Nice place, good value for money

Great for long term RV camping with hookups. They have nice hot springs pools, decent cell signal, and reasonable prices for full hookups. Camp sites are on the small side so neighbors are close, but at least they put plants in between to give you a little privacy.

Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground

    Quiet, private and unique

A great spot away from the main Joshua Tree strip. We visited for one night during the waning height of COVID and staff was taking all the necessary precautions. There were some restrooms and dish cleaning station available, though we didn’t use them. Spaces were clean and tidy and, although close together, were separated by beautiful bushes that kept it feeling private. Lots of birds around and great views of the desert and mountains. Fire ants were everywhere, so wear shoes. Most of the spots don’t have individual sewer connection but access to shared dump station. Everything was in great condition. The art installations and theatre looked so cool, but were closed temporarily. The lake was super cool and teeming with wildlife. Very reasonably priced for 50 amp & water hookup per night. Very easy access with 25’ trailer. We will definitely return.

    Palm Springs-Joshua Tree KOA

    Value for the area

Near and clean campground with clean restrooms requiring a key code to enter. Two laundry rooms. One large pool and three spas (hot tubs to folks not from So Cal) all heated with naturally heated mineral water. Secure. Park staff drive around at night to keep an eye on things. Most camps are close to the neighbors but most folks are quiet. Pay extra foe larger or premium campsites. Play area for the kids by the office. Put-put golf. Not much shade but many hedges. Gravel parking. Separate are for tents, communal sinks. Few trees around. Each camp has a sturdy picnic table. Propane fires only. And probably the same for BBQs. Great AT&T 5G cellular. Wi-Fi is weak, but it’s free.RV spot had fill hookups (water, 30 or 50 amp power, sewer, but no cable TV.

Well run and friendly, responsive staff. Understand that Desert Hot Springs is sometimes WINDY!! And that can mean dust storms, but that goes for the entire Cochella Valley. Not close to anything out here. A convenience store about 1/3 mile away. You won’t be running for coffee here. The the management sometimes hosts events and a weekend breakfast can be purchased.

All rigs are in good repair and I’ve seen nothing sketchy here at all. Been here 3 weeks with 3 more to go.

Bottom line: I would definitely stay here again, but it is a drive to get into DHS or Palm Springs. And it is windy/dusty.

    Thousand Trails Palm Springs

Close to outside activities and clean facilities

We arrived on Thursday and there were plenty of spaces open to pick from on the 50 Amp or 30 Amp side. The 30 Amp side is pull through so we decided to set up at site 61 further away from the Highway because it is a bit noisy from road noise. We didn't see any homeless people or outsiders although we did hear that the rangers are on the lookout due to theft and bikes being targeted recently. There are motion activated lights around some of the perimeter and we didn't encounter any of this during our stay even on our nightly bike rides. It was very windy and we had to leave one day early because we didn't want to travel back in a high wind advisory. The rates are expensive if you are staying nightly, but I would recommend it if you have a TT membership. Do yourself a favor and show up with a shovel or rake or contact the ranger to clean up your campsite. We didn't realize it until too late and had so many hard thorns from the weeds in the grass around the campsites, they stick to everything and follow you into your RV (they hurt) and they will give you flat tires on your bikes. One more weird rule that isn't on their regulations or policies page, a ranger drove up to my site and told me I had to take my flag down because only California or USA flags are allowed (I had a Rams flag up during the Rams game) which was weird because on our bike rides I saw flags that weren't a US flag or California flag flying.

Guide to Mecca

RV camping near Mecca, California offers diverse options throughout the Coachella Valley region. Located at an elevation of -180 feet below sea level, Mecca sits in one of the lowest points in North America, contributing to winter temperatures averaging 65-75°F during peak season. The surrounding terrain transitions from salt flats to sand dunes, with seasonal winds common from late winter through spring that affect camping conditions.

What to do

Desert exploration: Catalina Spa and RV Resort provides a central location for nearby adventures. "Palm Springs is 20 minutes south," notes one visitor, making day trips convenient for campers wanting to explore the region's attractions.

Water activities: Local lake access at some campgrounds offers a surprising desert oasis experience. "There's a little pond with ducks, too," shares a camper about the grounds at Catalina Spa, while Joshua Tree Lake features "a nice little pond with lots of birds that my daughter loved."

Outdoor recreation: Multi-sport facilities available at several resorts encourage active campers. "Lots of activities such as mini golf, pickle ball, and shuffle board, just to name a few," reports one reviewer about the amenities at Catalina Spa and RV Resort.

What campers like

Natural hot springs: Mineral pools offer therapeutic relaxation unique to this desert region. "Two hot spring-fed pools and hot tubs (one of which is massive and SO luxe)," writes one reviewer about Catalina Spa and RV Resort. "The spring leaves your skin oh so soft and rejuvenated."

Seasonal activities: Winter programming provides social opportunities for longer-stay visitors. "Shadow Hills RV Resort operates weekly rate was $65 a night. Very nice. Pool, patio with nice furniture, coffee every morning," notes one camper about the amenities.

Stargazing: Dark skies create prime viewing conditions at certain locations away from city lights. A visitor at Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground shares, "This is the most beautiful place to watch sunrise and sunset and stars. So peaceful."

What you should know

Water quality concerns: Well water at some parks contains minerals requiring filtration. One reviewer at Oasis Palms warns, "The water is NOT SAFE to drink or cook with due to excessive arsenic and fluoride. There are however 3 locations in the park with reverse osmosis filters to fill water jugs."

Wind conditions: Desert gusts can impact camping experiences, especially in open areas. "It can be windy at times, so you need to mind your awnings," advises a camper at Catalina Spa and RV Resort. "It's is warm during the day but cools at night."

Reservation patterns: Seasonal demand varies significantly across the region. At Coachella Lakes RV Resort, one visitor noted that "When we stayed here in late December they had just been open for about 2 months or so, and most of the spots weren't even open for use yet."

Tips for camping with families

Pool access: Family-friendly swimming areas provide relief from desert heat. At Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground, one family reports, "We booked and traveled here to show the kids the stars from a desert view, and it did not disappoint! We stayed three nights and had two perfect days."

Playground availability: Kid-oriented facilities vary significantly between parks. One camper noted about Palm Springs Oasis, "The amenities they did have were nice and well kept but there isn't a playground and there were no kids other than ours."

Wildlife viewing: Bird watching opportunities engage younger campers in desert ecology. "There's a nice little pond with lots of birds that my daughter loved," shares a visitor to Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground, providing a natural educational component.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Hedge-lined spaces create privacy at certain resorts despite close quarters. A reviewer at Emerald Desert RV Resort notes, "We upgraded to the 'luxury' site which meant that the spacing between sites was a bit greater and we had a lovely patch of green grass between us and our neighbors."

Noise considerations: Highway proximity impacts the camping experience at several locations. "It's close to the freeway and the road noise is loud and never stops. There is also a freight train that frequently runs along behind the park, and it's very loud," reports a camper at Emerald Desert.

Laundry facilities: Machine availability varies widely between campgrounds. "Laundry way too expensive at $5 for wash and $5 for 45 min dry. Credit card payment only and the dryer didn't dry our clothes all the way," reports one visitor about Emerald Desert RV Resort.
