What to do
Rock climbing access: Horseshoe Canyon Ranch serves as a premier climbing destination with hundreds of routes for all skill levels. "Horseshoe canyon is one of the biggest climbing and bouldering locations in the southeast area. Beautiful pastures and surrounded by rock that hundreds come to visit, you won't be disappointed to check it out!" notes Luke O. The ranch maintains well-developed sport climbing routes on grippy sandstone.
Fishing opportunities: Roaring River State Park Campground provides trout fishing access with stocked waters and convenient riverfront sites. "Fishing is good for all ages and day fishing licenses are available and hiking trails are great," explains Sandi C. The park features a working trout hatchery where visitors can view the raising process from fingerlings to catchable fish.
Hiking trails: Several campgrounds offer direct trail access to waterfalls, caves, and scenic overlooks throughout the area. "Lost Valley Canoe & Lodging has a yurt, campsites, cabins with hot tubs on the deck, bunkhouse, showers, allows pets, and is family owned," explains a representative. Many trails connect to the Buffalo National River corridor with varying difficulty levels.
What campers like
Private land activities: Byrd's Adventure Center provides extensive outdoor recreation on 800 acres of private land. "Byrd's was awesome. They not only have their own trails on private land, but off-roaders can hit trails in National Forest territory not too far down the road," explains Eric L. The property features river access, hiking trails and technical driving courses.
Clean facilities: Shady Oaks Campground maintains well-kept amenities year-round. "Camp hosts are amazing. They make you feel like you're family and they will even walk your dog for you if you need them to. Campground is very shady, quiet. Plenty of room between sites," writes Kaylene M. Their bathrooms and shower facilities receive consistent praise for cleanliness.
Onsite conveniences: Many visitors appreciate having essential services within the campgrounds. "The Outfitter store has everything you could need and more. The staff was very friendly. The canoe rates and shuttle rates were very fair and the food in the kitchen was delicious," shares Stephen R. about Buffalo Outdoor Center. On-site stores reduce the need for trips into town.
What you should know
Reservation timing: Popular cabin rentals fill quickly during peak seasons (April-June and September-October). "This place is not your run of the mill rest stop. Car camp, hammock, tent camp, or rent one the cabins to enjoy the roaming goats and horses around the property. Infamously known in AR as one of the best climbing spots. It does get quite busy, so it's best to arrive earlier in the day to claim a good spot," advises Drea R. about Horseshoe Canyon Ranch.
Road conditions: Some cabin locations require navigating steep or unpaved roads. "Steep and rocky to get down but very doable," mentions Kelsey R. about accessing Horseshoe Canyon Ranch. Another reviewer notes, "I've never been there but the reviews and the website look wonderful. I only reviewed to say it's probably not a good place for motorcycles to get in and out. The road in is dirt and gravel."
Weather considerations: The mountainous terrain experiences rapid weather changes and temperature variations. "We unfortunately had awful weather but will be back in better weather because the area is gorgeous," shares Lizabeth T. Spring brings occasional flooding while summer can deliver thunderstorms and high humidity.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Multiple campgrounds offer specific amenities for children. "My wife and I and our 3 children had a great time at the campground. Large playground, short nature trails, clean showers, nice folks that run the place," shares Matt G. about Shady Oaks Campground. Some cabins include games and outdoor spaces designed for family use.
Cabin options with kitchen facilities: Family cabins range from basic to fully equipped. "This place is great! We stayed in one of the platform huts and it was extremely clean. We stayed in the middle of July and the AC was turned off when we arrived but within a few hours the hut was completely cooled down which was awesome. Kids loved running around in the well-kept open areas and playing frisbee golf," writes Grant J. about JB Trading Co.
Educational opportunities: Several locations offer learning experiences alongside recreation. "There is also a cave you can walk in where you'll find a pool of water that goes for miles underground. Roaring river has three different campgrounds... There are also several hiking trails throughout the park, a visitors center, bath houses, a pool, and swimming holes," explains Wendy M.
Tips from RVers
Site selection considerations: Campers with RVs should research specific site dimensions before booking. "Very large concrete pads to set up RV. Very clean bathhouse/restroom," mentions Shiela R. about Buffalo Outdoor Center RV Park. Some locations offer more space and amenities than others.
Utility reliability: Check power and water connections, particularly during busy periods. "This park is so unique. The view is amazing and it is quite literally on top of a mountain. Very clean restrooms and surprisingly good service for how remote it was," says Lizabeth T. about Buffalo Outdoor Center.
Seasonal advantages: Some RV parks offer year-round accessibility with varying experiences. "I love this area, we've enjoyed the cabins at BOC and brought our RV this time. I have zero complaints about the RV park except be aware it sits on top of the mountain. So wind can be an issue and there's zero shade. Full hook ups, convenient to all the hikes and activities, totally level pads, and they don't pack them in here like sardines- there's only 15 spots," notes Jennifer O.
