Best Campgrounds near Boulder, WY

The region surrounding Boulder, Wyoming provides a mix of established campgrounds and dispersed camping options scattered throughout the scenic Wind River Range. Highline Trail RV Park and Wind River View Campground offer developed sites with full hookups for RVs near the town center, while Boulder Lake and North Boulder Lake campgrounds provide more rustic accommodations approximately 8-10 miles from town. The area accommodates tent camping, RV sites with utilities, and several free dispersed camping locations on public lands, particularly along Boulder Lake and the nearby river areas.

Roads leading to camping areas vary significantly in quality, with some requiring high-clearance vehicles, particularly after rain. Most campgrounds operate seasonally from late May through mid-September due to mountain weather conditions. A review noted that "the last two miles of access road is narrow dirt rocky and could be a problem if it rained hard," highlighting the importance of vehicle selection when accessing more remote sites. Cell service is spotty throughout the region, with better connectivity at campgrounds closer to Highway 191. Free dispersed camping on BLM land typically has a 14-day stay limit, while developed campgrounds may require reservations during peak summer months.

Campers consistently mention the impressive mountain views and water access as standout features of the Boulder area. The established RV parks provide amenities like showers, laundry facilities and hookups, while the more primitive sites offer greater privacy and direct lake or river access. One visitor described Boulder Lake as a "great water recreation area" for "swimming and fishing." Some campgrounds experience regular occupancy from local campers, particularly at free sites like Stokes Crossing, which was described as "a local hideout on river" and "one of nature's best kept little secrets." Proximity to the Wind River Range makes these campgrounds popular staging areas for backpacking and day hiking, with several trailheads accessible from camping areas for exploring the surrounding wilderness.

    Fremont Lake

    Large campground on beautiful lake

This is a large campground along the lakeshore.  The lake is pretty big.  Most of the sites are on a bluff above the lake.  Many of the sites did not appear to have a specific area to set up a tent, so there were some tents set up on gravel or pavement.  There are no showers available.  There was a good tent site on the upper part of our site.  We had heard reports of mosquitoes, but did not have any problems.  There were reports of a black bear in camp looking for food.  All sites have bear boxes.  This campground is conveniently located if you are planning to do any hiking from the Elkhart Park area.  We hiked to Photographer's Point and the views were spectacular.  Also, it is just a few minutes drive into Pinedale where you can sample the beers at Wind River Brewing.

    Willow Lake

    Not for me

This is NOT a free campsite, the charge is $10. Location felt hectic and crowded to me. Sites were not easy to identify. It was Labor Day weekend Monday so it might be better for other times. I elected not to stay.

    Fisherman Creek Road

    Easy and peaceful

Lots of large sites with fire pits and turnarounds. I went 2-3 miles to find an isolated site. Many sites had campers parked but no people. Little traffic on the road. Easy road in. Primitive dispersed camping.

    Big Sandy Reservoir Rec Area

Easy and with a Water View

A great spot for a one night stay on our way to Yellowstone. The breeze and water view were a bonus. No frills but it had everything we needed. We even found a spot on Labor Day weekend . . . THAT would never happen in Colorado.

Ring Lake RV and Tent Site

    Beautiful spot lakeside

Great boondocking spot right on a lake, smooth road so no worries about ground clearance or such, pull in and pick a spot. Small boat ramp, vaulted toilets and they have bear boxes otherwise no services. Not too busy for mid August.

Warren Bridge Campground and Picnic Area

Simple, a great over night stop

It's a simple campground with no shade or hookups, but it's clean. They do have a dump station. It was a welcome stop before Yellowstone. All sites are level, so drive in and relax and enjoy the vastness of the Prairie.

    Great stop over!

Easy access campground with dump station & potable water available. Nice level sites with space between them, but no trees. Right off the highway so easy in & out.

    Big Sandy Dam and Reservoir

    Beautiful & Buggy

Overall this campsite was beautiful with the sunset water views and the Tetons in the background. Also saw some cute cows right by camp and heard the coyotes at night. Very clean, quiet and peaceful. Only gave it 4 stars because of the insane amount of bugs (you can hear the buzzing in the video there were so many)
