    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Augusta, Wisconsin provides access to several county park campgrounds and private RV resorts within a 25-mile radius. Coon Fork Campground features spacious campsites with lakeside options and is popular for families, with amenities including hot showers and flush toilets. Harstad Park offers a more rustic experience with 27 primitive sites along the Eau Claire River, while Sandy Hill Campground provides access to Lake Eau Claire. Both tent and RV camping are available throughout the region, with some locations like The Woodland and Stoney Creek RV Resort also offering cabin accommodations.

Camping in the Augusta area operates primarily from April through October, with limited winter availability at select locations. "Harstad is get away camping. Right on the Eau Claire River with canoe kayak access. Only has pit toilets, no electricity and no showers," notes one visitor, highlighting the primitive options available. Most campgrounds in the region provide fire rings, picnic tables, and access to basic amenities, though services vary significantly between developed and primitive sites. Several locations charge day-use fees for boat launches and recreation areas. Cell service can be limited at more remote campgrounds, and visitors should carry cash as many facilities only accept cash for firewood purchases and additional services.

Waterfront camping represents a significant draw to the area, with non-motorized lakes being particularly popular among families. A camper described Coon Fork as having "spacious campsites, surrounded by trees. Try to get a lake side site, they are amazing!" Several campgrounds prohibit motorized watercraft, making these lakes ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Visitors consistently praise the privacy between sites at Coon Fork and other county parks, where mature trees create natural buffers. Wildlife viewing opportunities are common, particularly at dawn and dusk. Reservations are recommended during summer weekends when beaches and waterfront sites fill quickly, especially during holiday periods. Many campers appreciate the enforcement of quiet hours at the county park campgrounds, making them suitable for family camping experiences.

      Pine Harbor Campground

The campground is minutes from Lake Wissota, close to Lake Wissota State Park, and has very nice oversized campsites. Nice bath and shower house with plenty of hot water.

Pigeon Creek Campground — Black River State Forest

      Great time for the kids

We loved how well spaced out the sites were and traveled on a busy June weekend. Our kids loved taking their scooters on the campground road and to the lake swimming. The kids loved the playground and path, beach. We had one person that was blaring their music and there was no ranger around. Finally someone must have called the police and they shut off their music

      North Wood County Park

      Water Everywhere!

North Wood County Park is a hidden gem. Many of the sites have a view of water and several even have water access right from your site. There are several loops that range from paved with electric to rustic and non-electric. We stayed at site 59 which stretched down to a paved trail and then one of the lakes. We were close to the suspension bridge, which is a fun attraction. There is also a low roadway that goes over the water that is absolutely beautiful and sometimes floods. There are several dams and it makes for a great kayak or fishing spot. Most of the campground is paved, which is awesome if you have an ebike or e scooter. They sell wood at a decent price ($7), but nothing else. You also have to book your site online with a $10 fee for using the online booking. It does make arrival super easy, you just pull in and set up camp. Overall I would highly recommend spending a few nights here.

      Brunet Island State Park Campground

      Has it all

Sites 1-24 have electricity 25-49 are not and no gen allowed. 1-24 are all pretty open. Once you get to 25 and up you can get water frontage. Pit toilets are ok. It would help if people could read & close the lids when finished. Nice hiking and biking plus canoeing & kayaks for rent.

      Perrot State Park Campground

      Surprised in Wisconsin!

I am making a cross country road trip to my next job. I left Vermont and will end in Washington. I was amazed that this is the prettiest place I’ve stopped so far. Wisconsin for the win!

Pigeon Creek Campground — Black River State Forest

Pleasant place to stop, with a few wrinkles.

If you want a stop on a drive, or a home base for exploring the local tourist attractions (look up toilet on the side of the road,) this is the place for you! Think about bringing your own drinking water, though, the water from the pumps is a dark red-brown color, either from rust or from tanin.

      The bad:

      • No showers/dishwashing/handwashing area.
      • A bit buggy- in late May mosquitos were manageable with spray, but watch out for ticks if you venture into the woods.
      • Some sites can be noisy, with a road running 20 feet behind.
      • Not much to do if there's rain.

      The good:

      • Overall, a well maintained place.
      • clean sandy beach with warm water
      • beautiful trees & underbrush make sites very private and shaded
      • a short drive from some nice towns, trails, lakes, rivers to enjoy.
      • close to the highway, and cheap.

Castle Mound Campground — Black River State Forest

      Great for smaller setups

Castle mound is tight and older sites so you may have to drive the wrong way around the sites in order to setup your camper properly. Single loop for electric and another for tents. Site look decent sized and lots of trees but pretty much exposed visually to all sites. Parking pads are decent but we had a very tall site which complicated it.

    Guide to Augusta

Located in west-central Wisconsin, Augusta sits at an elevation of 930 feet in the rolling hills of Eau Claire County. The area features numerous camping sites near Augusta, Wisconsin with access to the Eau Claire River watershed. Winter camping options remain limited with most area campgrounds operating April through October, though several facilities have begun extending their seasons to accommodate growing demand.

    What to do

Paddling opportunities: Lake Wissota State Park Campground offers diverse water recreation on its 6,300-acre lake. "Beautiful shaded campground with semi private sites. Nice beach that is a walkable distance from the sites. Lots of walking, biking and horse trails that are full of wild berries," notes a visitor. The park has boat rentals and complementary yard games available at the visitor center.

River adventures: Harstad Park provides direct access to the Eau Claire River. "Right on the Eau Claire River with canoe kayak access. A great shallow creek for kids to explore," reports one camper. The park recently added new playground equipment in 2022, enhancing recreational options.

Family activities: Stoney Creek RV Resort features numerous structured activities beyond standard camping. "This is an amazing place for families to spend time camping. There are so many different planned activities for both the children and the adults to participate in," mentions one reviewer. Amenities include mini golf, laser tag, a bounce pillow, skate park, and arcade.

    What campers like

Spacious sites: Coon Fork Campground receives high marks for site privacy and size. "The sites are very generous with a lot of green between spaces. You are not on top of your neighbor," writes one camper. Sites include fire rings, picnic tables, and many have a bench next to the fire pit.

Clean facilities: Lake Wissota State Park maintains excellent standards for their restrooms. According to one camper, "Clean bathrooms with showers. Wonderful staff in the visitor center. Firewood and ice sold on site." Rangers regularly clean facilities, though campers should note that bathrooms close for cleaning between 7:30-8:30 am.

Non-motorized lakes: Crystal Lake Campground offers a quieter water recreation experience. "Beautiful paths for bikes and hiking. Nice sites. We loved ours with direct access to the lake," shares one visitor. The campground maintains a sandy shoreline making it ideal for swimming and paddling.

    What you should know

Site reservations: Most campgrounds near Augusta operate with a mix of reservable and first-come sites. At Coon Fork, "A total of 108 spaces with about 30 that are first come. If you don't make it before the office closes, there is self check in."

Wildlife considerations: Local campgrounds have wildlife management protocols. "Raccoons frequent the park, hence the name, so they will give you trash bags at check in to keep them at bay. That's a great way to help control the problem," notes a Coon Fork visitor.

Variable amenities: Sandy Hill Campground maintains basic facilities but charges for some services. "Located across the road from the Lake Eau Claire boat landing. If you park at the boat landing for a day of fishing there is a $3 charge." Most campgrounds sell firewood on-site with prices around $6 per bundle.

You can even order fresh baked donuts on Saturday mornings," writes one family. Children particularly enjoy searching for painted "moose antlers" hidden throughout the park.

Swimming options: Rock Dam Park provides water recreation suitable for various ages. Though one visitor notes, "Rock Dam is a blast! You don't see a lot of folks in their senior years. It's laid back and easy going. Lots are spacious as well." The campground connects to ATV trails which can create additional noise during peak times.
