What to do
Hiking at state parks: Tranquil Timbers Camping Resort offers easy access to Potowatomi State Park trails. "It was easy to bike into sturgeon bay and awesome to be able to bike in the potowatomi state forest. There are some awesome views at this campground too because it's close to the bay," notes Amanda C.
Fishing opportunities: Devils River Campground provides river access for anglers. "It is fun to go down by the river and explore. One year we caught about 60 crayfish and cooked them on the campstove and ate them," mentions Jimmy P.
Swimming options: Devil's River Campground features a chemically treated swimming pond. A camper explains, "A few years ago they tore out the old small swimming pool and put in a large chemically treated swimming pond. The swimming is pretty good and there is now plenty of space."
Mini-golf and games: HTR Door County (formerly Egg Harbor Campground) offers recreation beyond your campsite. The campground is "heavily wooded and quiet with a variety of sites" according to a recent visitor.

What you should know
Campground size variations: Door County KOA Holiday in Brussels is among the largest facilities with 265 sites, while smaller campgrounds like Countryside Motel & RV Sites have just 16 spaces.
Weather considerations: The New Franken region experiences wet conditions at times. At Bay Shore Park, "Rain does cause many of the spots to flood," warns a reviewer.
Site spacing: Campgrounds vary greatly in site density. At Kewaunee RV & Campground, Jennifer G. notes: "My husband ended up with some sinus issues on the day we were supposed to leave and wasn't able to pull the camper home until he felt better. We offered to rent the site for another night and they said since we wouldn't be staying there they wouldn't charge us."
Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds in the region operate on reservation systems. Devils River Campground "doesn't have a ton of sites and they are reserve only," explains a visitor.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Bay Shore Park provides multiple playgrounds. "This is a great spot for kids..although there isn't swimming there are 2 playgrounds and lots of space to play frisbee or run around," says Kristine M.
Pool options: Campgrounds with swimming facilities appeal to families with children. At Devils River, "The swimming is pretty good and there is now plenty of space. The only possible downside with small children, as there is no fence around the pond, and there are sites that border the pond."
Bug preparation: Insects are common in the wooded camping areas. A Devils River camper warns, "The only negative with our stay (which the campground can't help) were the mosquitos, flies, and bees. So bring bug spray!!!"
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Apple Creek Campground offers level sites despite some terrain changes. "We stayed 6 nights in our 36 ft motor home with tow. Even though we were on a hill the campsight was level. We had plenty of room for rv and tow," notes Robert O.
Hookup configurations: Water and electric connections at some rv parks near New Franken require careful setup. At Bay Shore Park, "The electric and water hookups were on opposite sides of the site, and we had to keep adjusting the travel trailer to get both to actually hook up," one RVer explains.
Dump station access: Not all campgrounds offer full-hookup sites. "Countryside Motel & RV Sites has water and electric only. NO DUMP STATION AT ALL," Barbara B. notes, emphasizing the importance of planning ahead for waste disposal when visiting smaller RV parks.
