What to do
Rock climbing opportunities: Coopers Rock State Forest features rock climbing routes suited for different skill levels. "I have been going her for years and I always love to climb this area. The pitches arent too high (50ft) but great just to get out there an enjoy life!" notes Nick P.
Mountain biking trails: The terrain around Ohiopyle State Park provides extensive mountain biking opportunities. "The Great Allegheny Passage trail runs through Ohiopyle. We loved being able to access the GAP trail right from the campground," according to Bounding Around.
Fishing at local ponds: Chestnut Ridge Park offers fishing opportunities at its small pond. "There is a sandy beach where kids are often found collecting newts and fishing. There is a nice green space for running around," reports Christina W.
What campers like
Spacious, well-maintained sites: Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground receives praise for its generous spacing. "The spaces are big enough that you are not on top of your neighbors, which is nice," notes Dana G.
Seasonal camping options: Sand Springs Campground offers year-round availability. "Pull thru sites, full hookups, near I68, Morgantown and Coppers Rock. Activities for the kids and playgrounds. Great views. Minimal Interest noise," shares Fred R.
Wooded, private atmosphere: Many campers appreciate the natural setting at Coopers Rock State Forest. "The sites are well spaced out and pretty spacious, the site we were in had electric hookup for 50a/30a/20a but no water at the site but there was water near the bathroom area," explains Mike G.
What you should know
Bathhouse availability varies: Facilities differ across campgrounds. At Rhododendron Camping Area, "There is a bathhouse located closest to site 5 with trails from other sites to get there. The facilities are always clean—no shower available," mentions Sienna L.
Road access challenges: Some campgrounds have limited access during maintenance periods. At Ohiopyle State Park, detours may be necessary: "This unanticipated road closure with the typically convoluted PA road system detour coupled with the fact that everyone in the town of Ohiopyle was telling visitors to the area that the campground was fully closed," shares Danielle V.
Weather preparation essential: Morning fog and temperature fluctuations are common in this region. "We went in late October and we arrived fairly late in the day and to our surprise someone was in the store when we got there. The bathrooms were clean and heated to a comfortable level," notes Mike G. about Coopers Rock.
Tips for camping with families
Dog-friendly trail access: The area offers numerous dog friendly campgrounds near Cassville with connected trail systems. "My dog is mostly weenie dog, and his little legs made it everywhere. Also had 12yr old son with me and he had a great time. Didn't miss his PS4 at all," shares Lindsay W. about Coopers Rock State Forest.
Kid-friendly activities: Mylan Park provides extensive recreation options. "While there are not many trails and no camping, the area is pretty with rolling hills and gorgeous sunsets to be seen. This is a sports complex with many activities available," explains Desireé.
Early morning adventures: Plan early activities for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. "Wake up early and watch the sunrise at the overlook I'm telling ya!" recommends Emily M. about Rhododendron Camping Area.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: RVers should check specific site amenities before booking. "We had empty space on either side of us. New section is spaced out with a berm of earth in between alot of the sites. Road out a decent storm and 2.5 inches of rain in 24 hours," notes Josh W. about Coopers Rock.
Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds require additional equipment for leveling. "The only reason why I gave 4 stars is it was challenging to level because the big gravel rocks on the site," mentions Karen about Sand Springs Campground.
Pet-friendly options for larger rigs: Several dog-friendly campgrounds near Cassville welcome RVs with pets. "There are both modern and rustic cabins to rent. There are XC trails, an old school house and even a stage for the weekend music series performances. Dog friendly as long as on a leash," explains Wes O. about Chestnut Ridge Regional Park.
