The campground will be closed for the 2023 season due to water and sewer replacement.

This park's peaceful surroundings on a peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River in St. Mary's County belie its history as the location of a camp which imprisoned as many as 52,264 Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. A museum on site recounts this vivid history. A park map is available at park headquarters, the camp office, camp store and the Civil War Museum/Marshland Nature Center. The Point Lookout Lighthouse is currently closed for renovations.

    Close to popular tourist destinations

This campground is family and dog friendly and close to Williamsburg tourist destinations.  It has multiple sites for rvs, tents, camping cabins, yurts, and nicer more fully equipped cabins with bathrooms.  They even have a fantastic dog bath and holding kennel in case you have more than one dog.  They have a pool with a sprayground and a grassy area with ping pong and corn hole.  Plus, they always have activities for the kids.  Love this place and can't wait to go back.

    Like a camping community

Spots are close together so you will get to meet your neighbors if they are there. You can rent yearly spots if you want. Some spots back up against the water. It has a pier, pond, river access, ice cream shop/store, cafe. There aren’t a lot of trails to bike but it does have putt putt, a playground, outdoor pool, indoor hot tub(not functional while we were there).

    Quiet nights at Private Campground

Stopped off at this campground after finding it while passing though just before Labor Day weekend. While it was the last weekend for the pool before its closure and while they were in the process of working on some of the plumbing at the campground, it was a well put together campground which was very impressive.

Located somewhat remotely from the larger community and near several places of interest along the road, this camp was a great stop for a tent camper like myself. They offer a basic tent site for $26 with nice bath houses. For full connections the price does rise slightly offering both both 20/30 amp and 50 amp connections for RVs.

The roads around the camp are gravel and a little bumpy but the sites themselves were pretty level and grassy for tents which was pretty nice. Sites are located far enough off the road that road noise is minimal.

I did also notice they have cabin rentals available and a pretty nice little store with lots of options for those who didn't bring everything with them.

Goodwill Cabin — Prince William Forest Park

    HUGE cabin GROUP Camp #1

PWFP has a number of large group cabin campgrounds available to rent, with capacities of 75 to 200. They are called Goodwill (#1), Mawavi (#2), Oreda (#3), Pleasant (#4), Happyland (#5). My organization has rented 3 of the 5 different cabin camps over the years. These camps were made by the CCC and even used by the then-CIA during WWII. They are extremely rustic and you should expect to see lots of bugs, snakes, etc. during your stay, and it adds to the experience in a great way. The cabins have beds with waterproof mattresses, closets, screen windows, and electricity, but no fans or AC (bring fans!!). There are central shower houses, central dining halls (with full modern kitchens, fridge, etc), and extra buildings called craft lodges (which have tables for activities, discussions, etc.). Sites have extras like fire rings with seating, swimming ponds, hiking trails, grassy playing fields, etc. but I’m not sure they all have all of these. They’re all among the trees and shady. The PWFP rangers and website have lots of great info on the local flora & fauna (best moths I’ve ever seen in my life here). This is a great place for a school overnight or scouting. They’ve been working on renovating them since we started renting them in 2006, so make sure to tour all the different camps to get the one that meets your needs best. Camping with a Pool!

The best thing that is offered here is there is a pool! There are many amenities in addition. There are boat rentals, fishing, beach, docks, picnic areas, cabins, tent camping, rv camping, trail hiking, etc. The visitor center is large with a small gift shop/camp store. The group sites are very nice. The whole park is very well maintained and large. The cabins are clean and accommodating. The view from most cabins along the water are so nice. There are random exercise machines placed along trials to enhance workouts. My only gripe is the camp site pads. They're made of very loose gravel which I find bothersome as the little rocks get into our shoes and the tent stakes slid out easily.

Cabin 24 is a 2BR/1BA cinderblock cabin with waterfront views and large yard space. One room has two bunk beds, dresser, shelving, a lamp, and two night stands. Other room has a queen bed, shelving, a lamp, night stand, and dresser. Fireplace and screened in porch are lovely. There’s a fire pit and picnic table, and plenty of parking space.

Halfway point to the beach | Visit to Williamsburg

We stayed in Cabin 1 for one night to break up our travels to NC into two days. We visited Colonial Williamsburg before checking in. It is only minutes away with other activities for young kids near by including mini golf and a Ridley’s museum. The campground was very family oriented and quaint. I believe it’s been open since the 50’s and they have good old fashioned hospitality. I even got a courtesy check in call on our drive down to confirm and ask if we had any questions. I asked about late check in and they were very cheerful and helpful.

It had the cleanest bathrooms and showers I’ve ever come across in a campground.

They have a little arcade, pool and playground for kids. There were porch games like connect four and corn hole by the check in cabin to play also. I appreciated the flyers in our room listing local attractions and suggestions. They even had free donuts and treats for kids on certain days.

We loved our cabin. It was immaculately clean as if it were newly built. The door to the bunk room allowed us to tuck our toddler in early and keep her undisturbed. The A/C, TV and fridge made the stay very comfortable.

The sites are very close together but we felt like we had total privacy the whole time. There’s a train that goes by occasionally which might bother some people but we used to live by one so we liked to hear it roll by.

We plan to stay again on our way to the beach next year.

    RV Camping

It was a nice clean campground but is definitely an RV resort. We stayed in a cabin that had two bunks and a full size bed, with a bathroom, microwave and small dorm size fridge. The pool was relaxing but the park set up reminded me of a typical American trailer park. Not my cup of tea but it was nice.

    Great with kids

Visited fall of 2016. Lots to do with kids..... planned activities like Petting zoo, hayrides, and movie night, and campground amenities like a pool (was chilly though), bounce pillows, bikes, short hiking trails, and ice cream shop. We stayed in one of the cabins for a "camping light" experience with our young kids and enjoyed it. Bathrooms and showers clean.

    Love!

Great amenities. We went in march during a hot weekend and were surprised how cool it was - a great breeze goes through the camp. Loved getting ice cream and playing in the splash pad and pool. Fun paths to hike and coffee in the morning with deer-friends around. Will return with some non-camping friends who will enjoy the cabins or yurts!

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

    Gen. Smallwood and his Camps

Smallwood State Park offers a more intimate setting for camping. There is only 1 circle for camping with tents and cabins intermingled. The sites are moderately separated giving some privacy. They are in short distance from the water. There is a playground, bathhouse, and historical buildings that are accessible to campers. There are hiking trials, but none are two extensive. The trails can be massively over grown at times making some inaccessible.

    Williamsburg trip

Although, the cabins were nice the campground was not maintained. The staff is not courteous and the prices for the stay way tooo high. We paid 150 for two nights for a primitive tent site with garbage in a can that was never picked up during our whole time there. There was also feces at one site. Looked to be human because the restrooms were so far away. The grounds are dirty and not maintained. I could have stayed at a national park for better accommodations.

    Historical Tour

We stayed here during our historical tour of Jamestown and Yorktown. It is a small campground but it has everything you need. We really loved the sandy playground. It is completely fenced in and has play equipment, hammocks and a zip line. The grandkids loved the zip line. The campground is very clean and the staff was very nice. The location is fantastic and close to all things Williamsbug. The only thing that is negative is that it is on the train tracks. The cabin we stayed in was about 15 feet from the tracks. Not really a complaint from us since the kids thought it was awesome. So, just a heads up on the trains. They are loud and they are often but the campground is a great place to stay due to its location.

    Very nice campground

The cabin we stayed in was very nice. It had a very large back deck with a picnic table. We chose one without a bathroom, and the bathhouse was a very short walk. They have plenty of recreational activities for the kids. The staff was friendly and helpful. The playgrounds and pool were very clean, and the store had everything we needed. It is a very short drive off the highway and an easy commute to all of Williamsburg’s attractions. My only complaint is that my dogs typically travel everywhere with me, but I was not allowed to bring them on this trip because pit bulls are the ONLY breed they don’t allow on the campgrounds. However, if you have other breeds there is a very small dog park for them to run around and play. Other than that we really enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay at other KOAs when the dogs are not with us.

    Civil War Camping

This is the campground I grew up on. We've been camping at this place since I was a child. Now I take my own children here. Its the place we frequent the most. It is chalk full of historical significance as the grounds used to host a prisoner of war camp for the Union during the Civil War. The land was initially used as a resort then made into a hospital followed by a prison due to its ideal location. It is at the tip of Southern Maryland. The location of the campground is ISOLATED. The sites offer moderate space and vegetation between the pads to allow for privacy. The facilities are well maintained. There are playgrounds throughout as well as access to docks and the bay to fish and crab from. Their is a musuem and camp store where they rent canoes. They also offer cabins, which I haven't ever used. This is by far my favorite campground, but it is probably because I am sentimentally attached.

    -Positives-

Sites are spacious! Golf cart rentals Pool is incredible for all ages. Employees are super friendly. 50amp & 30amp hookup. Sewer is in 2 locations for each site. WiFi available. Multiple kids playgrounds. Ice cream shop. Sheriff monitoring the whole facility.

    Better as a day spot?

We spent part of Labor Day weekend here, and there was almost nobody else there. The second night, one other pair of campers showed up. I found it super strange that more people didn’t take advantage of a campground on the river with availability. That said, there were a bunch of people who came in and used the cabins and invited large extended families during the day. They played loud music and had kids running all over the place, very festive atmosphere. It kind of felt like it was more appropriate for that kind of use. The camping areas were all on the lawn, and the owners were a bit uptight about which site we could choose (despite there being ample availability, and the person on the phone telling me that all sites were first come first serve). Just felt strange. We did enjoy taking evening walks through the town to the restaurant/bar on the water, but that was literally the only thing to do unless you have a fishing/crabbing license.
