The beaches and trails seem so much more peaceful and untouched this time of year," notes one Westmoreland visitor.

Private cabin settings: Campers appreciate cabin sites with adequate space. At Richmond North - Kings Dominion KOA, "the campsites are nicely spaced and level. The camp store is fairly well equipped too!" according to Bonnie S. Many cabins feature separate living and sleeping areas.
Shuttle services: Some campgrounds offer transportation to nearby attractions. "Bus shuttle service to Kings Dominion. Clean and well kept," writes Darcy S. about the Richmond North KOA. The shuttle runs approximately every 25-30 minutes during park operating hours.
Clean bathroom facilities: Point Lookout State Park maintains high standards for shared amenities. "Bath house was very clean and well-maintained. Looks like host cleaned it several times a day. Only two shower stalls, but they were nice and roomy with fairly hot water," notes Jen V.
What you should know
Seasonal bug populations: Summer cabin stays require thorough insect preparation. One Belle Isle camper warns, "We had super mutant mosquitoes and horse flies. They were resistant to citronella candles, essential oils, and bug spray with 40% deet. We only found relief in the water."
Limited shopping access: Most cabin locations require advance planning for supplies. "If you need the showers, it's two stalls men and two women's side. The trails are ok, and the rest of the park has the unkept feel," observes Anthony D. at Westmoreland State Park.
Cabin heating systems: Bethpage Camp-Resort provides climate-controlled cabins for year-round comfort. "We hope to be back," noted Robert P. after a rainy five-day stay, suggesting the cabins provided adequate shelter during inclement weather.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly biking routes: Fredericksburg-Washington DC KOA offers safe cycling paths throughout the property. "Kid friendly biking around the park. Also saw many with electric scooters and golf carts. Large playground and pool, all very clean and well kept," reports Cat R.
Interactive water features: Cabins with water access provide entertainment options. "The lake and pools are fantastic. We love having both options for spending some time in the water. The playgrounds are large and fun for the younger kids," shares Christen C. about Bethpage Camp-Resort.
Scheduled park activities: Look for campgrounds with organized events. "They did have great trails, a lot of scheduled events for all ages, a pool and boat rentals and competitive prices," explains Rachel A. about Westmoreland State Park.

Site selection for privacy: At Hidden Acres Campground, cabin rentals offer an alternative to tent sites. "The roads around the camp are gravel and a little bumpy but the sites themselves were pretty level and grassy for tents which was pretty nice. Sites are located far enough off the road that road noise is minimal," reports Crystal C.
Full hookup availability: Some cabin areas provide utility connections. "Site #16 was perfect. It was gravel site that was level and very well maintained. Possibly our favorite campground in a VA State Park so far, it was that great of an experience," shares Frank E. about Belle Isle State Park.
Seasonal capacity planning: Rainbow Acres Campground becomes busy during summer months. "This campground is about 3/4 year rounders. People who rent a campsite and build porches and party sites up and come visit on the weekend or stay the summer," notes Matt W.
