What to do
Wildlife observation at dawn: Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge offers early morning viewing opportunities when animals are most active. "We biked and hiked the parks but you can easily enjoy a lot of the sites via car. Just know that pets are NOT allowed," notes a visitor to Jellystone Park™ Chincoteague Island.
Kayaking water trails: The marked water trails at Janes Island State Park provide excellent paddling routes through marshlands. "The water trails have a big variety from large channels to narrow marsh routes and bird watching is excellent. There's a beach that's an easy 1-mile paddle away with lots of room to spread out," reports a camper at Janes Island State Park Campground.
Disc golf course: Trap Pond State Park offers a full disc golf course among the trees. "So much to do! Bike rentals are free (donations accepted), there are several hiking/biking/horse trails, disc golf, and canoe/kayak/peddle boat rentals (in season)," says a visitor who enjoyed the variety of activities.
What campers like
Secluded waterfront sites: At Virginia Landing, campers appreciate the peaceful waterfront location. "We loved this campground. We were in site 317 with full hookups. We missed the shade a lot, but the evening breeze off the bay made up for it. The sunset over the old pier is breathtaking," explains a camper at Thousand Trails Virginia Landing.
Clean, modern facilities: Many campgrounds in the region have updated bathhouses. "The bathroom was almost like showering at a spa! Stainless steel, wood paneling, very clean. The cabins included ac/heater, ceiling fan, nice bed padding, and plastic chairs/table," describes a guest at Pocomoke River State Park Campground.
Crabbing opportunities: Direct access to crabbing spots from campsites is a popular feature. "My kids loved catching tiny crabs in the mud every night," mentions a visitor to Virginia Landing, highlighting the simple pleasures that create memorable camping experiences for families.
What you should know
Seasonal bug issues: The marshy environment can mean significant insect activity, especially in summer. "Unfortunately the bugs were so bad, it was nearly impossible to enjoy. No-see-ums bite all day long, bug spray helps with these. Deer flies bite from the morning sun until it's dark and they are the worst at dusk," warns a visitor to Janes Island.
Limited services: Some campgrounds have restricted amenities or operating hours. "When we were there, they were building a new bath house near the island and cabin sites otherwise porter potties were there," notes a camper at Trap Pond State Park Campground, suggesting checking facility status before booking.
