    Inks Lake State Park Campground

Great getaway in Texas Hill Country - May 2018

Catching up on my reviews…Inks Lake SP is a superb park about 40 minutes from Austin in the Texas Hill Country.  Great lake with a large no wake zone in one area that makes it very family friendly and paddler friendly.  There are sites away from the NWZ that allow you to ski/tube right from your campsite.  Great choice of flat, easy access spots.  Tent-only spots with only water are available as-well.   Decent hiking and easy biking around the park is available.  The area around Devil's Hole is great for floating about and jumping from the rocks.  Just wish that folks would clean up after themselves better.  Great camp store with lots of products.  Lake was lowered in 2019 to update the docks and boat ramps (very nice now), lake is back to normal seasonal levels.  ILSP is close to Austin, so it stays busy during the season, so reserve well ahead of time.  No Wifi at the campsites, but decent mobile reception (ATT).  30/50 amp and water at most sites.  Fire ring and table on concrete pads at all sites.  Tables are not covered, however.  I've been told that there is Wifi available at the camp store, but I cannot personally verify that.

    Cedar Breaks Park

    Beautiful big sites

The sites are large which means you aren't right on top of your neighbors. Lots of shade. Each site has its own shelter with picnic table, grill and fire pit. Electric and water but no sewer. The sites along the outside of the loop have lake views and are level. The sites along the inside are scary unlevel! Some of the big rigs were backed in and jacked up 4 feet or so in front. Saw a lady break her ankle stepping out of her camper. Be prepared to level your camper! I suggest odd numbers 19-35 and even numbers 36-42 as the most level sites with the best lake views.

The park has hiking trails, boating and swimming access, but none of these are accessed right at the camp area.

Restrooms are very basic with no hot water. They were clean but a little creepy for showers. I used the toilets there during the day and my camper shower and toilet at night.

    Jellystone Park™ Austin North

    Dream campground

Amazing resort. Great monthly rate. They go above and beyond with their amenities providing an indoor play room, full kitchen, business center, etc. Very family friendly resort with plenty of activities planned. Lots of full time families staying here long term which makes for a fun time. The one downside was that we didn’t get the sites that we had put a deposit down for. There seems to be a lot of turnover in the office so when we checked in it wasn’t the same lady who had helped us pick out our sites and reserve them. We travel with my parents and always try to stay next to them but they were unwilling to accommodate that even though they originally told us they would. All in all I do recommend this park for the amazing ambiance and amenities.

Hill Country RV Resort & Cottage Rentals

Nice Park with little room between sites

The park it’s self is nice and clean.  Staff for the most part is friendly and nice.  The pool is a hopping place over summer break and on the weekends when it’s warm.  RV sites are tight in the daily/weekly sites and parking your 40+ foot rig and tow vehicle in the spot are probably not happening.  They do have over flow parking and depending on your site it could be a good walk.

They are pet friendly and have several dog parks and potty areas through out the park.  The laundry room is like no other I’ve ever been too.  All machines operate via debit/credit cards, no more quarters!!

Over all we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this park for monthly stays or in one of their top tier sites for daily/weekly stays.

    Sunset RV Park

    Peace in Hill Country

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Basecamp — grounds that offer a comfortable home base that you’re happy to return to after a day of exploring the surrounding area. Ratings for this category are based on: Value to cost: 5 Overall grounds: 4 Utility of sites (hookups, layout, accessibility): 4 Local Attraction Proximity: 4 Reservation Process/Ease of Getting a Site: 5 Amenities: 4 Customer Service: 5 Cleanliness: 4

A really lovely spot in Dripping Springs, Sunset RV Park is a small park in Hill Country outside Austin (this is not the one near Lake Travis). It’s clear that this is a destination spot for snowbirds to the area as most everyone was set-up for a long-term stay and we saw very few folks come and go during our one-week stay. The park is very quiet with close attention paid to COVID precautions (this is the first park we encountered that was 100% contact free check in).

The park is built somewhat into a hill, so some of the turns are a little tricky and our spot was a bit uneven. The space itself was a very wide asphalt driveway with a picnic table and metal fire ring below a stone wall, perhaps a bit close to our neighbors as I wasn’t totally certain it was definitely ours to use.

The amenities are pretty basic- clean laundry and bathrooms and a good enough wifi signal to allow us to use the internet easily. There’s also propane available on site. I enjoyed the layout of the grounds and each site was afforded some privacy thanks to the set-up and tiered spaces. The weekly rate of $300 was very reasonable.

Excellent access to Hamilton Pool (make reservations!), Reimers Ranch and Westcave Discovery Center. Also about 30 minutes to most of Austin including SoCo, McKinney Falls SP and 6th Street.

Reservations were made by phone with a very friendly woman and, as I mentioned, check in was contactless, so we really didn’t encounter anyone else aside from a friendly wave from folks maintaining the grounds in golf carts. The place is a nice find outside Austin and very close by to family for us, so we’re happy to have found it and will return!

    Summit Vacation Resort

    Texas Camping at its finest

We loved the quiet and peace of this RV Resort nestled in Texas Hill Country.

The Park: they have a large pool area with cafe and snacks. The property is large and spaces are spread out through out the park. The big draw is the Guadalupe River, Canyon Lake, and the woods and hills.

They have hot shoes, bath houses, laundry.

The sites: Gravel and mostly level, very few sites were unlevel. You’re surrounded by hills so it is nice and quiet. They are full hook up sites. Each site had a fire ring and picnic table. Small deer herds would move through the park each evening. Many of the campers feed them corn and they know the sounds and come running out of the hills.

The campground is near grocery and hardware stores. Within an hour are several bigger towns with more stores.

Cellular: T-Mobile was decent but not great. They do have Campground WiFi that worked faster.

Canyon Lake Military - Randolph AFB

We love it here. Not for everyone.

We started with day passes, then graduated to renting out the loft cabins, then tried tent camping, and eventually and recently parked our travel trailer in the reservable RV spaces. All in the same vicinity. Made great memories at each stay.

Pro’s: Best rate in town for military (active, retired, $ disabled). Water is beautiful. Fishing can be fantastic. Lots of water activities available for rent or bring your own. Pet friendly, Great for families, most people are very respectful and wonderful to talk to. Good food and stores nearby. Lots of wildlife. Quiet. Close to town and short drive from San Antonio.

Cons: Hard to get ahold of staff to make reservations. Market is extremely expensive and staff isn’t very friendly. Lost and lots of fire ants.

We recommend it to all of our friends and family and bring them often. We love staying in the loft cabins. Some are pet friendly. We have stayed in the mobile homes on the other side of the lake once but that was not a great experience as our things were stolen off our table and covered patio (on Veterans Day) and they were only left unattended for 15 min or less. The mobile home wasn’t very nice but functional at least.

Guide to Sunset Valley

Camping options near Sunset Valley, Texas offer year-round accessibility with varying amenities across multiple locations. The region maintains an average summer temperature of 95°F from June through September, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons. Highway access to most RV parks remains consistent regardless of weather conditions, though rainfall can occasionally affect unpaved areas at some campgrounds.

What to do

Lake activities within reach: River Forest Haven provides direct access to the Colorado River where visitors can participate in water recreation. "We really enjoyed tubing and fishing, but the campfires were the best. The staff will deliver a generous amount of dry fire wood for $15," noted one visitor who appreciated the water activities.

Explore downtown Austin: Located just 15 minutes from downtown, Pecan Grove RV Park serves as a strategic base for urban exploration. "We adore this place. It's located in the middle of an urban oasis. Within walking distance to Zilker Park, Barton Springs, So. congress and downtown," a camper observed about the convenient access.

Local breweries: The area offers craft beer options near several campgrounds. "It's next to a brewery, food trucks, and great pubs," a reviewer mentioned about Pecan Grove RV Park, highlighting the pedestrian-accessible food and drink options for campers without vehicles.

What campers like

Secure facilities: Oak Forest RV Park offers enhanced security features appreciated by guests. "Good location. Has Tiny houses mixed in with RVs. Lots of trees and shade. Great people," reported one camper about the well-maintained grounds and community feel.

Pool amenities: Swimming options exist at multiple parks regardless of season. According to a Longhorn RV Resort visitor, "Amazing sites with concrete, a picnic table, and a fire pit. Our spot, #97, was right on the water and it was an amazing spot to watch the sunset! The pool was perfect and the bathrooms were amazing."

Community activities: Regular social events create opportunities to meet fellow travelers. "Every night they have something going on and they send a text each day with activities. They text you when you get a shipment," explained a reviewer at Austin Lone Star RV Community, describing the organized social calendar.

What you should know

Road noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some camping experiences in the area. "It's located along the freeway, so there is some road noise. However, at night it was pretty quiet," reported a visitor who stayed at La Hacienda RV Resort, noting the decreased traffic sounds during sleeping hours.

Reservation timing: Demand fluctuates seasonally with additional local events creating booking pressure. "This was the last place around with availability this weekend, and we really didn't read too much about it in advance," shared a guest at Longhorn RV Resort, suggesting weekend availability constraints.

Site variations: Campground locations offer different levels of privacy and amenities. "Super cool to get tucked into the woods. Some of the spots are secluded and others aren't. Down side is it isn't assigned sites," explained a River Forest Haven camper who experienced variation in site conditions.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple facilities cater specifically to children with dedicated play areas. "They have an onsite laundry that's coin operated and really friendly residents. I was there for a week and my next door neighbor invited me and my wife to a BBQ," mentioned a camper at Lake Travis Inn and RV Park, highlighting the social atmosphere.

Short tubing routes: River activities sized appropriately for younger children exist in the area. "The tubing is great for people with children who don't necessarily want to go tubing two to four hours... Very short route but water safety should be practiced as it is very deep in some areas," advised a River Forest Haven visitor.

Dog-friendly options: Most rv camping near Sunset Valley accommodates pets with varying restrictions. "My little dog and I just had a memorable camping trip near Austin, TX! The space was spacious, the nature was beautiful, and most importantly, my dog was free to run around," shared a visitor about their experience with a pet.

Tips from RVers

Site dimensions: Most parks accommodate larger vehicles with appropriate hookups. "Family of 5, Grandma, Mom & 3 teenage boys, well organized, had after hours packet ready that was a pleasure to have. Clear and with tag for the truck. Pull through sites, nice trees and a wonderful first time at location," reported a visitor to Austin Lone Star RV Community.

Shower facilities: Bathroom quality varies significantly between locations. "The facilities are clean, with full hookups, a well-maintained bathhouse, and a laundry room. We'd recommend it to other RVers looking for easy access to the city," advised campers who appreciated the clean facilities at their chosen park.

Internet connectivity: Wi-Fi service varies between campgrounds with cellular backup options. "The only thing I'm not happy about is the price ($250 a week). It's a bit steep, but it is a gated area," noted a Longhorn RV Resort visitor who weighed costs against amenities.
