Best RV Parks & Resorts near Hords Creek Lake

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Lakeside Park at Hords Creek Lake offers multiple full hookup RV sites with 50-amp service, water, and sewer connections on spacious, well-shaded lots. The COE-managed park features pull-through sites positioned along the lakeshore with covered picnic tables and fire rings at each location. Most sites accommodate larger rigs, with sites #73, #75, and #76 particularly suited for big rigs seeking lakefront views. Flatrock Park provides an alternative with electric and water hookups for $10-20 per night depending on location. Sites throughout the area typically include gravel pads with generous spacing between neighbors. "The site was roomy with lots of shade trees and a lakefront view, even though the lake is WAY down. Sites are not on top of each other."

Reservations through Recreation.gov are strongly recommended, especially for premium lakeside spots which fill quickly during spring and fall weekends. While the campground provides basic amenities like dump stations and clean restrooms, RVers should arrive with adequate supplies as the nearest full-service grocery stores are approximately 20 minutes away in Coleman. Cell service remains reliable throughout most areas of the lake, though signal strength varies by carrier. The campground experiences significant seasonal wildlife activity, with numerous reviewers mentioning deer regularly wandering through campsites during morning and evening hours. According to one visitor, "There were a few people here when we arrived, but never heard a peep out of them. The peace and quiet that we've experienced in this park is beyond words."

    Great location, near everything

Fairly new park on top of hill. Stayed long term so very familiar with park. Next to I-20 so there’s that. Good pool, dog park, laundromat with pay per load on machines-card. Hard Gravel parking- most sites not completely level, astroturf yard. Roads are asphalt paved so great for walks. Did not use showers. Good sewer, water pressure and 50/30 amp available-included for overnight. Good Spots just for overnight folks-Pull through. Backin long term-very good- best in area for electric kWh price. Good long term rent price. First A.I. mega center being built in the area so wait list long term.

COE Hords Creek Lake Lakeside Park

    Hords Creek #75

Hords Creek COE in Coleman, TX Site #75 50 amp Full hook up Pull through site April 12-16, 2024

The site was roomy with lots of shade trees. Our door faced the west & trees were not close enough to our RV to block out the evening sun. We did have a lakefront view, but the lake is WAY down.

This loop was full over the weekend, but sites are spaced just far enough apart that you can still enjoy the peace & quiet.

If I had a choice of any spot in the park, it would be #73.

Will definitely be back. — at Hords Creek Lake.

COE Hords Creek Lake Lakeside Park

    Great Stay at Hords Creek

Hords Creek COE in Coleman, TX Site #73 50 amp Full hook up Pull through site March 2024

In the last 23 days, we’ve stayed in 6 parks, I have to say that this is my favorite park so far.

The site is roomy with lots of shade trees with a lakefront view (even though the lake is WAY down). Sites are not on top of each other.

There were a few people here when we arrived, but never heard a peep out of them.

The peace & quiet that we’ve experienced in this park is beyond words. Relaxation at its best!

When we come back, we’ll either get the same site, or #76. — at Hords Creek Lake- Lakeside Park.

    Tye RV Park

    Little Gem Right off Highway

This park has new owners as of February this year! Rates start at 35.00 for level gravelled and paved spots but no qshade trees as yet. Pool is being built now and they have nicest laundry facility we’ve ever seen- best part is there are 9 machines which are FREE and new. Some highway noise as to be expected. Friendly staff and nice and clean. This park is mostly for long-term but have 16 pull - through designated sites in the front of park with newly planted trees. Highly recommend this great stopover!

    Abilene State Park Campground

    Nice 1st time experience

This was our first camping experience traveling full time in our 5th wheel. We had no reservations but found a "walk up" spot in the Wagon Circle Loop. Our spot was #15. It was a loop with back in sites which had electric/water hook ups. There is also a dump station. There were bathrooms, fire pits, and picnic tables. There is a recreation area nearby with a playground and a swimming pool. Due to the time of year, the pool was not yet open. There were hiking trails and it was our first experience with geocaching.

COE Hords Creek Lake Lakeside Park

Nice CoE campground in rural central Texas

General: Approximately 140 sites (plus 12 cabins) spread out all around Hords Creek Lake in two areas: Lakeside Park and Flat Rock Park. According to the map, two of the four gatehouses are closed – not sure if this is a permanent closure (and don’t know if these campsites are also closed). There was no attendant at the gate when we arrived.

Site Quality: Paved/gravel driveways, some are pull-through, some have sewer hookups, and some have 50 amp electric. A bonus for us that we did not know when we reserved is that several sites have screened-in shelters with electricity and a generous-sized concrete picnic table. There are many trees throughout the campground and although we didn’t need the shade when we were there, I imagine it would be nice during the hot summer. There is also a fire ring but there was a strict fire ban when we were there (In fact, there was a large wildfire about 8 miles from the campground and we had been warned to stay ready to evacuate if the wind changed direction).

Bathhouse: There seem to be more than adequate bathhouses located throughout, however, the one closest to our site was small and somewhat inadequate: one shower, one sink, and two toilets. If the campground was completely full, this may pose a problem. There was no hot water, even in the shower and the shower door did not have a latch for privacy. Also, no hooks or shelves, or soap dispensers. Make sure you bring a towel if you do not want to use the air dryer.

Activities/Amenities: There are several boat ramps, fishing docks, and swimming areas at different points of the lake. There was a nice, covered playground in the Lakeside Park campground. It is a bit of a hike to the dumpsters.

This was an overnight stay for us as we continued to travel through Texas, but we appreciated some of the amenities offered at this campground

    RidgeView RV Resort

    Great newer park

Right off I-20 in Abilene. A variety of pull through and back-in full hookup sites. Sites are sand/gravel with an artificial grass patch for each. Laundry and bath sites are new clean and modern. Nice pool and fire pit area next to the camp store. There is some road noise from I 20, sites farthest away from the office are farthest from the highway. The park sits on a high ridge providing beautiful west Texas sunsets.

    Abilene State Park Campground

    Would go back

We stayed here twice 10 days apart in December since it was convenient incident to a longer trip. Our first site was in Oak Grove which I thought was much superior to Pecan Grove, site-wise. Pecan Grove 66 was by some nice warm clean bathrooms and showers but the site was up a steep slant and was just barely long enough for our 24 foot trailer. The park host came by and checked on us which was kind. Both sites had oak tree shade and picnic tables and were paved with asphalt.

Sites are electric and have water and 50/30 but no sewer. There’s a simple dump station.

There was a burn ban on but you could definitely smell wood fires both nights.

Small playground, easy hiking trails, and plenty of birds and nature walks. In the summer they have a pool which looked like it would be really nice. Not far from Abilene, we visited the zoo there.

Guide to Hords Creek Lake

Hords Creek Lake offers RV and tent camping options spread across multiple parks, with Coleman Dam creating a 510-acre reservoir at an elevation of 1,900 feet. During summer months, temperatures regularly exceed 95°F, making lakeside camping spots particularly desirable for cooling breezes. Winter overnight temperatures can drop below freezing, requiring campers to prepare for significant temperature fluctuations.

What to do

**Fishing spots: Water levels vary seasonally at Flatrock Park, affecting fishing conditions. "We did a hike that lead us to a wonderful water hole that we were able to jump in and swing off a tree into the water. We had such a blast," reports Isabella H., highlighting recreational water activities beyond standard lake fishing.

**Nature watching: Early mornings at Abilene State Park Campground offer wildlife viewing opportunities within 30 miles of Hords Creek Lake. "We saw feral hogs a few times at dusk. Really loved it," shares Amie M. about her 8-day tent camping experience.

**Hiking trails: The 3.5-mile trail around Abilene State Park provides accessible hiking for most fitness levels. Michael C. mentions, "Trees aren't too tall for providing shade, and there are tons of mesquite trees, so watch out for thorns while you're walking," warning of natural hazards campers should prepare for.

What campers like

**Clean facilities: The shower buildings at Tye RV Park receive consistent praise from travelers stopping near Hords Creek Lake. "They have all new laundry facilities (which are free to use!!) and new showers that look really nice," notes Tris W., highlighting amenities that complement basic camping.

**Affordable rates: Campsites with hookups at Flatrock Park can be extremely budget-friendly with passes. Katie H. reports, "With our access pass it was only $8 a night for electric and water hook ups!" making it substantially cheaper than other area options.

**Spacious sites: RV parks like Whistlestop RV Resort offer well-designed layouts preventing overcrowding. L Robert T. describes, "The grounds are pretty standard. Flat without many trees. Good crushed rock pads with paved site for picnic table," emphasizing practical features for comfortable camping.

What you should know

**Weather considerations: Summer camping requires heat preparation while winter camping demands cold-weather gear. At Abilene State Park, Jackie R. notes, "There was a burn ban on but you could definitely smell wood fires both nights," indicating fire restriction compliance issues.

**Noise levels: Highway proximity affects several campgrounds near Hords Creek Lake. JZ W. explains the situation at Tye RV Park: "I knew there would be noise from the freeway as it is just off the freeway (I-20). BUT there is also a train that blows its horn AND it's in a flight path so there are jets flying over pretty regularly."

**Reservation strategies: Popular weekends fill quickly at RidgeView RV Resort, especially for premium sites. "A variety of pull through and back-in full hookup sites. Sites are sand/gravel with an artificial grass patch for each," reports Stacey, detailing the site configuration options.

Tips for camping with families

**Shower facilities: When camping with children, check for family-friendly bathroom setups. At Abilene State Park, Amie M. discovered, "The real hidden gem was in the bathroom by the yurts. They have a disabled shower. So it's within reach and the showerhead is lower. Awesome to use to clean my toddler without getting drenched."

**Recreation options: Plan activities beyond swimming since lake levels fluctuate significantly. "There is a recreation area nearby with a playground and a swimming pool. Due to the time of year, the pool was not yet open," explains Nomadic L. at Abilene State Park.

**Weekend planning: Tim notes that weekday camping offers more peace: "Had the place to ourselves M-F, but weekends were packed with disrespectful and noisy campers who littered, cut through sites, let their children run/scream well past dark."

Tips from RVers

**Site selection: When rv camping near Hords Creek Lake, check site level information before booking. At RidgeView RV Resort, J D. warns, "Sites are large but hard to find level on many of them," suggesting potential setup challenges for larger rigs.

**Internet connectivity: For remote workers camping in the Hords Creek Lake area, 36 W Motel and RV Campground and nearby parks offer varying connectivity. At Whistlestop RV Resort, Ray & Terri F. report, "AT&T coverage was excellent, with 5 Bars of 5G service and speeds up to 10 MB/s. We had an unobstructed view of the sky and so we were able to receive all 3 SW Dish satellites and the Resort WiFi was decent with~2.5 MB/s."

**Seasonal considerations: Most RV parks around Hords Creek Lake remain open year-round but with limited amenities in winter. J D. notes, "No game room and pool is closed for winter" at RidgeView RV Resort, highlighting the seasonal variation in available facilities.
