Come to the shady banks of Elm Creek, where large trees arch overhead and deer and other critters wander by. Just 16 miles southwest of Abilene, the park has a lake and fishing pond, a historic swimming pool, trails, camping and more.

Camp at a tent or RV site, or in a screened shelter. For a bit of adventure, stay in one of our yurts.

COE Hords Creek Lake Lakeside Park

    Hords Creek #75

Hords Creek COE in Coleman, TX Site #75 50 amp Full hook up Pull through site April 12-16, 2024

The site was roomy with lots of shade trees. Our door faced the west & trees were not close enough to our RV to block out the evening sun. We did have a lakefront view, but the lake is WAY down.

This loop was full over the weekend, but sites are spaced just far enough apart that you can still enjoy the peace & quiet.

If I had a choice of any spot in the park, it would be #73.

Will definitely be back. — at Hords Creek Lake.

    Great Stay at Hords Creek

Hords Creek COE in Coleman, TX Site #73 50 amp Full hook up Pull through site March 2024

In the last 23 days, we’ve stayed in 6 parks, I have to say that this is my favorite park so far.

The site is roomy with lots of shade trees with a lakefront view (even though the lake is WAY down). Sites are not on top of each other.

There were a few people here when we arrived, but never heard a peep out of them.

The peace & quiet that we’ve experienced in this park is beyond words. Relaxation at its best!

When we come back, we’ll either get the same site, or #76. — at Hords Creek Lake- Lakeside Park.

    Outstanding

Me and two other trailers camped at this outstanding hidden gem of a campground. We hosted a large fish fry so we rented a pavilion which was complete with running water, sink, microwave, electricity and a large fireplace. The pavilion came with several RV sites on the parking lot but I walked all over the campground and it was meticulously groomed.

Good overnight spot off I 20

Overnight stop, far enough from the interstate that the road noise was minimal. Easy to book online last minute. New owner on-site, came by to make sure we had what we needed. About 50 sites, most seem to be long-term. I would stay again.

    Little Gem Right off Highway

This park has new owners as of February this year! Rates start at 35.00 for level gravelled and paved spots but no qshade trees as yet. Pool is being built now and they have nicest laundry facility we’ve ever seen- best part is there are 9 machines which are FREE and new. Some highway noise as to be expected. Friendly staff and nice and clean. This park is mostly for long-term but have 16 pull - through designated sites in the front of park with newly planted trees. Highly recommend this great stopover!

Most of the RVs at big busses or fifth wheelers. They have all the amenities like WiFi and hookups. They do not have daily parking but they have weekly ($80) and monthly ($320). It’s just another RV Park for people that live on their big RVs in the middle of a nice little town.

    Abilene State Park Campground

    Hidden Gem

The name is a little bit of a misnomer, because if you are from Texas…camping in Abilene doesn't sound that great.

The park is closer to Buffalo Gap, south of Abilene proper and well off of I-20.

Tent and RV camping options are available as well as yurts and screened shelters. All RV spots have water and electric, and a few spots have sewer.

This is not a place to do hardcore hiking or biking or back country camping. This is a developed park and not super big.

The pros though are easy trails that kids and all levels can hike and bike. The sites are well developed and make for easy camping. In the summer it is extremely hot but the pool is fabulous and you can even rent kayaks/canoes to take on Lake Abilene.

It is a chill campground, a great way to spend a long weekend in the summer hitting the pool and cruising around on your bike. A place you can let your kids roam free and explore.

    Great spot for the night

Emily I believe, checked me in and was super sweet and easy to work with. She let us pic our own spot!

The rv park itself is right off highway which is good and bad. A little noisy but not bad for easy access after long day of driving

They have all new laundry facilities (which are free to use!!) and new showers that look really nice

The spot itself also has nice hookups, the septic hole was clean and the power box seemed new

    Great spot to go to!

Very Low Lake Levels Made It an Endurance Test

    1. There is no "lake" at this time. It is more like a narrow stream that winds through a valley. At 17% capacity when I visited in June 2018.
    2. There are drive-up campsites with electrical and water hookup, but apparently water had not flowed through the pipes going to my campsite in a very long time. When I opened the water valve, a flood of ants preceded a brown geyser of dirty water. I closed the valve and never opened it again during my overnight visit.
    3. There are primitive sites that overlook the "lake," but in the absence of water the view is surreal. It's actually a young forest trying to establish itself.
    4. You can get a burger and fries for lunch or bacon and eggs for breakfast at the Concho RV office. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
    5. Black ants rule the park. Plan accordingly.
    6. The Concho RV park has restroom/shower facilities that are free to use. The toilets flush, there is hot AND cold running water, and there was plenty of TP available. I had to hang the mirror on the wall myself.
    7. I found only 1 campsite suitable for hanging a hammock.

    Quiet, Rustic, & Beautiful

This is camping the way we like it -- rustic, beautiful and inexpensive.  And, there was no one there in January, despite the state parks being packed!  We had the place completely to ourselves, with the exception of a few fisherman.

For $5 a night you can camp at any one of the dozens of sites scattered around the lakeshore.  Lots of space in between sites and most with beautiful sunrise/sunset views. Each campsite has a picnic shelter above the table for shade, and rain, a grill and fire ring, plus your very own trashcan – never saw all that before in such an inexpensive park but there you have it!   No hook-ups in the park, so bring your solar panel for some electricity if you need it.

The lake is used mostly by local anglers, but I can imagine it gets pretty busy during the summer months when the lake level is at its highest. The only bathrooms were centrally located near the diner/ campstore/ RV Park/ gas station near the boat launch.  So, if you are out in the campground, you'll want to bring your own method. The folks were great there and let us use the wifi for a few hours.

There’s not much in the way of trails in the immediate area of the lake, except the dirt roads. A word about the dirt, it is mostly clay which when saturated with rain water will form the most exceptionally sticky mud to coat the underside of your vehicle. It comes off, but wow, only with some strong encouragement and a high pressure hose.

The closest towns with grocery stores and other services are Balanger and Menard, but you can get a few things including drinking water, ice, and drinks at the camp store.

COE Hords Creek Lake Lakeside Park

Nice CoE campground in rural central Texas

General: Approximately 140 sites (plus 12 cabins) spread out all around Hords Creek Lake in two areas: Lakeside Park and Flat Rock Park. According to the map, two of the four gatehouses are closed – not sure if this is a permanent closure (and don’t know if these campsites are also closed). There was no attendant at the gate when we arrived.

Site Quality: Paved/gravel driveways, some are pull-through, some have sewer hookups, and some have 50 amp electric. A bonus for us that we did not know when we reserved is that several sites have screened-in shelters with electricity and a generous-sized concrete picnic table. There are many trees throughout the campground and although we didn’t need the shade when we were there, I imagine it would be nice during the hot summer. There is also a fire ring but there was a strict fire ban when we were there (In fact, there was a large wildfire about 8 miles from the campground and we had been warned to stay ready to evacuate if the wind changed direction).

Bathhouse: There seem to be more than adequate bathhouses located throughout, however, the one closest to our site was small and somewhat inadequate: one shower, one sink, and two toilets. If the campground was completely full, this may pose a problem. There was no hot water, even in the shower and the shower door did not have a latch for privacy. Also, no hooks or shelves, or soap dispensers. Make sure you bring a towel if you do not want to use the air dryer.

Activities/Amenities: There are several boat ramps, fishing docks, and swimming areas at different points of the lake. There was a nice, covered playground in the Lakeside Park campground. It is a bit of a hike to the dumpsters.

This was an overnight stay for us as we continued to travel through Texas, but we appreciated some of the amenities offered at this campground

    Tucked away in the trees

Smaller state park with lots of shade in the Texas heat. The areas has plenty of place to picnic and walk around. A few trails with a small pond that connects a few together. There is also a pool area this must be booked along with your site reservations. There are also place to tent camp, cabins and yurts with electricity to rent. The sites vary from full hookups to water and electricity. Each site is private and not to close each with plenty of privacy. There is also a lake that’s outside of campsite area that can be busted up the road.

    Two things I love:

    1. Shade and privacy
    2. Picnic table and fire pit at full site hook up.

    One thing I didn’t like:

    1. Road is currently damaged for easier exit so their is a detour.

    Relaxation at it’s Best

This RV campground is beautiful and away from any road or city sounds and light pollution. This would be 5 stars but there are very few full hookup spots with sewer. Go to Recreation.gov to reserve your spot. If your in the area you won’t regret the stop!

    Nice park on a lake

We randomly stayed here overnight after making a detour to the cute town of Coleman (about 20 minutes away). It's clearly a local spot but was a great option for a stop over out of Texas. There's several sites right next to the lake with water and electric for $10 a night. Other sites not water front but are full hookups at $20 per night. There's a boat ramp there as well. The sheriff came by after we parked to collect the fee and gave us a receipt.

Good cell connection and a quite place and beautiful place to stay. No showers in bathrooms and they were rather old and a bit dirty. Other than that, it was a great stay!

    Great newer park

Right off I-20 in Abilene. A variety of pull through and back-in full hookup sites. Sites are sand/gravel with an artificial grass patch for each. Laundry and bath sites are new clean and modern. Nice pool and fire pit area next to the camp store. There is some road noise from I 20, sites farthest away from the office are farthest from the highway. The park sits on a high ridge providing beautiful west Texas sunsets.

    Peace and Quiet

Beautiful and spacious sites, unobstructed view of the lake, well maintained park. Site 76 is at the last site on the stretch right beside the dam with no thru traffic (boat ramp is closed) and we never saw or heard anyone down there the entire weekend. Full hookups on that stretch and large shady spots with covered picnic tables, a fire ring, and a grill. Absolutely love this place and will definitely return regularly.

    Peaceful camping!

This camp ground is well kept. Plenty of RV spots and tent spots. We like to tent camp. The bathrooms are pretty clean and maintained, and you never have to go to far to get to one. We take our bikes to get around. I’ve gone to Lakeside since I was young for family reunions and camping and I love it. It’s always so peaceful and I love to watch the deer that roam around. My go to spot!

    Small park, but awesome !

For being a small state park it offers a lot of nice camping sights, for RVs and tents alike. There’s creeks running through the park aswell as a small fishing pond with crystal clear water. Nice easy hiking trails, and a bird blind. Just a nice getaway from civilization. We go there very often just to be outside and breath fresh air. And if you camp there, make sure to look up at night, what a view!

    Tranquil Lakeside Stay

My partner and I travel full time in our toyota dolphin and this place was a gem. We stayed for three nights and the lake was beautiful, the swimming areas clean, the bathrooms tidy, and we had no neighbors. And with our access pass it was only $8 a night for electric and water hook ups! Totally recommend. Our pups loved it too!

    Epic beach camping

Wow, such an amazing camping experience! We boondocked with our 36ft motorhome right on the beach.

$12 to get in and stay as much as you’d like. Busy on weekends but very quiet during the week.

They allow driving on the beach here from access #5 and north of it. Watch the tides, best to get in & out when the tides are low. Some areas had very soft sand. We got stuck coming in but were able to get our using our leveling jacks and shoving things under the tires but on the way out we got barrier way deeper and needed assistance getting out using a truck that pulled us with towing straps.

Good for tents, or small rigs or medium size rigs that are prepared for an adventure... not for newbies!

We spent 5 amazing nights here on the beach, and can’t really beat camping right on the sand, with the sound of the waves and lots of sunshine.

    Nice 1st time experience

This was our first camping experience traveling full time in our 5th wheel. We had no reservations but found a "walk up" spot in the Wagon Circle Loop. Our spot was #15. It was a loop with back in sites which had electric/water hook ups. There is also a dump station. There were bathrooms, fire pits, and picnic tables. There is a recreation area nearby with a playground and a swimming pool. Due to the time of year, the pool was not yet open. There were hiking trails and it was our first experience with geocaching.

An OK place for an overnight

This is not by any stretch a good campground.  That said, it is right by I-20 (you can hear the traffic) and there are not very many alternatives in the area.  This KOA has quite a few permanent residents (old campers with stairs and decks...) which, in my mind, gives it a little "creepy" feel.  The sites are gravel and are reasonably level, conducive to not unhooking for the night.  Not all sites have fire rings.  Some sites do not have the table on gravel but on grass.

We will stay here again--if we have no other choice.

Wonderful evening site with pull through sites next to river and park. We pulled in with our 25 ft trailer at 830 pm and had no problem. We hooked electric and were good for nigh. Bath house with shower was great. The park was a delight! One mile path around with nice playground for children. Rooster and cats in park.
