    Inks Lake State Park Campground

Great getaway in Texas Hill Country - May 2018

Catching up on my reviews…Inks Lake SP is a superb park about 40 minutes from Austin in the Texas Hill Country.  Great lake with a large no wake zone in one area that makes it very family friendly and paddler friendly.  There are sites away from the NWZ that allow you to ski/tube right from your campsite.  Great choice of flat, easy access spots.  Tent-only spots with only water are available as-well.   Decent hiking and easy biking around the park is available.  The area around Devil's Hole is great for floating about and jumping from the rocks.  Just wish that folks would clean up after themselves better.  Great camp store with lots of products.  Lake was lowered in 2019 to update the docks and boat ramps (very nice now), lake is back to normal seasonal levels.  ILSP is close to Austin, so it stays busy during the season, so reserve well ahead of time.  No Wifi at the campsites, but decent mobile reception (ATT).  30/50 amp and water at most sites.  Fire ring and table on concrete pads at all sites.  Tables are not covered, however.  I've been told that there is Wifi available at the camp store, but I cannot personally verify that.

    Rocky River RV Resort

Beautiful campground for long term residents

RV camper here. I rate campgrounds from the viewpoint of wanting a place for a brief family vacation. When we arrived here we made a reservation online (easy) so that was good. But the woman up front had trouble finding our reservation and was unpleasant (happily we had a screenshot). I think she’s one of the owners. It wasn’t a great way to feel welcomed especially with COVID where most parks have contactless check in anyway. Despite the customer service, the stay was otherwise uneventful.

Good: The park has beautiful river access and was very quiet. Anyone in the area can get the same river access by parking to the side of the bridge over the river on 190 and walking down. Landscaping is beautiful and security is good. Almost every site is a pull through.

Bad: The park is almost entirely full of full time residents with everything from FEMA trailers and 60s era camper vans to new Grand Designs. Lots of sites have permanent structures/trailers/patios and there’s bits of trash in high use areas like around the dumpsters and picnic area. The sites are also gravel and not concrete. Sites are close together.

Neutral: There are some cool looking cabins by the dumpsters. We didn’t go in them though, of course.

Summary: This may be a peaceful option for long term residents but I wouldn’t vacation here if I was looking for a weekend getaway. Average rating.

    Lometa Regional Park

    Good intermediate stop

The park is next to the town’s rodeo arena. Site 11 is a nice long pull through spot. 50 amp electric and water are easily accessible with a park bench on the other side with a charcoal grill.

Spacious spots, 12 total. It’s $20/night, $100/ week and $350/ month. There’s a $5 fee for the dump station, but it’s very clean and easy to approach.

Not the fault of the park, but it’s close to US highway 183, so truck noise and the occasional train can be noisy, but your RV A/C can knock the sound out, no problem.

No Wi-Fi, but excellent cell signal, full bars of T-mobile and sprint, also Visible and Google Fi

    San Saba River RV Park

    Nice Quiet Campground

Green grass, well spaced concrete pads, and large pecan trees right along the San Saba river. There are full hookups and cable tv. The office is confusing and is down at the golf course office. (Avoid parking in the spaces up against the river and under the pecan trees. A couple of large branches fell on and next to us causing us to move the first night.

    San Saba River RV Park

    Great stop

This is a great place to stop and see the sights in the area. I had a reservation and asked to come in one day early. They said fine. Have a wide level concrete pad with full hookups. There is some cable tv cable there but we didn’t hook it up. You can have a choice of shade under large pecan trees or wide open sites. Mngmt is very accommodating. Only reason I did not give a 5 star is because on the route into the park there is a large pecan tree that dragged across the top of my rv. The branches were not big ones. I followed gps directions in here which got me here but were not the absolute best way in. Turn off of hwy 190 onto cr 104 will save you from crossing a very uneven railroad track crossing. We turned off of hwy 190 into cr 102. We are staying in a 43’ class A RV. I highly recommend this place. It is in a beautiful golf course. Cost was $30/ night.

    Inks Lake State Park Campground

    Fabulous Fishing and Great Hiking

Inks Lake SP: The campground is okay. Get a site that has a water view. The hiking was great.

    Riverway RV Park

    Great Travel Stop

We stayed here for a 2 night travel stop. All sites are pull through and have full hookups. The utility pole even has a light so hookup at night is convenient. Sites are super long, fairly level and gravel. Not all sites have picnic tables, but all have a concrete patio as well as grassy area. Nice private, super clean restrooms with tile showers. WiFi is free but signal gets weak the farther you get from clubhouse. Nice laundry with plenty of washers and dryers. Several perms here, but all RV’s were clean and perm sites were tidy. Park is on a nice part of the Llano River, and there is a nice walking path along the river. There is a large gravel beach area on the river where you could swim or fish easily. Park is about 1 1/4 miles from cute downtown area, but you cannot walk to town easily as part of the route has no sidewalks.

    Black Rock Park

Not a DARK SKY Friendly Campground

    Pros:

    • Very small park

    • Great view of the lake as trees/shrubs are minimal

    • Clean campsite except for the trash in the fire pit

    • Most sites had 2 sewer hookups.

    • Most sites had a nice distance from neighbor sites.

    • Crushed granite surrounds the site parking pad so no muddy mess after rain

    • Lantern pole, BBQ grill, fire pit with grilling grate and wooden picnic table at each site.

    • Extremely clean restrooms/shower facility.

    • Heated restrooms/shower facility(we camped the week after Christmas).

    • Restroom/shower facility sink had hot water and soap dispenser

    • Mini golf course in the park.

    • 2 bar signal AT&T

    Cons:

    • With reservations made 153 days prior to arriving for our 4-night stay, we encountered confusion by a rude check-in clerk who told us to come back at 3 pm (it was then 230pm and we could clearly see our campsite was vacant). Since the entry lane was down to one lane, we tied up traffic for nearly 20 minutes until the check-in clerk finally realized that we were camping and not checking in for their cabins. I’m not sure why she didn’t see our truck and 28 ft bumper pull trailer.

    •$6 fee to reserve on-line.

    • No mention on the park website there was a burn ban in effect, so no ground fires permitted, not even for cooking.

    • No site privacy due to minimal trees/brush throughout the park.

    • Campsite BBQ grill and fire pit were next to each other, so it would have been difficult to gather around the fire pit.

    • Good condition asphalt site parking pad was uneven side-to-side as we noticed nearly all sites in that condition with all requiring leveling.

    • NOT A DARK SKY FRIENDLY CAMPGROUND! Numerous street lights throughout this camping loop and unfortunately we had one directly across from our site#11 which lit up our site like daylight! Who camps under a street light???

    • Non-stop highway noise, even throughout the night, from Texas 261.

    • Doors on toilet stalls were only 5 feet tall.

    • Lots of large roadway speed bumps.

    • No hiking trails.

    • No park WIFI

We used Black Rock as our “jumping off point” for various Hill Country Holiday Light displays, which worked out very well. Kingsland is closer to the park than Burnet where there is a HEB, Ace Hardware, Dairy Queen and local restaurants. Closest Walmart to Black Rock is in Marble Falls, along with a HEB.

Guide to San Saba

Multiple deer by the river that are human friendly," writes Kathy H., highlighting the park's proximity to wildlife viewing opportunities.

Water proximity: Riverside camping at Dos Rios RV Park provides direct water access. "Site #1 is more secluded and overlooks the water. More of a hike to the bathrooms, but worth it if you're nimble. You can rent kayaks and explore the calm waters or tie up a tube and float," says camper Hfo.

What you should know
