    Tower Campground

    Friendly but noisy

Very friendly and accommodating staff. This park is open year round and well set up for cold weather, the water spigot is heated so if you invest in a heated water line and have an insulated camper you should be good for the cold. Many units were tucked in for winter with skirting and large external propane tanks. The negatives are noise and lights. Highway noise was very very loud. Easy to see outside but not a lot of camp feel. Bright light through skylites while sleeping. Didn’t use bathrooms or showers so no comment on facilities.

    Dakota Sunsets RV Park

So good I did want to tell anyone about it

We only stayed 2 nights here but could have stayed much longer. This RV campground is perfect. The attention to detail you see in this park is not something we have seen a lot during our travels. The gravel roadways to each campsite are groomed perfectly level. Art, sculptures and flower pots are everywhere. Not a thing out of place. The Wifi was really fast…the best we have seen in over 1 yr and full time camping. The office and store have ice and a wonderful selection of goodies, The park is surrounded by corn and soybean fields and is quiet. This is a real gem of a campground. Not a thing wrong with it. We highly recommend. We had over 50Mbps on our Verzion and ATT hot spot as well as the RV park's Wifi system. This place is smoked hot for internet connectivity. This park is Big Rig friendly with very large pull throughs

    Gunderson Park

Up to 14 days free camping

CAMPING IS NOW ONLY ALLOWED BETWEEN MEMORIAL DAY THROUGH LABOR DAY. NO WINTER CAMPING IS ALLOWED ANY LONGER.

Gunderson Park is a nice little boondocking location just ½ mile from the downtown area of Centerville. They have 2 fire pit locations, but, after speaking with the official at city hall we found out you can camp pretty much anywhere in the park you would like.

It is free to camp here, you can stay virtually as long as you wish to according to that same official. There are no hook-ups. No bathroom facilities. No picnic tables. No playground for children. You may fish with a South Dakota license in the lazy rolling Vermillion River that skirts the park on 3 sides. They have a cement boat ramp. I will say when we stayed there the river was so low you would have had great difficulties getting a boat launched. On the west side of the park there are park benches at the beginning (or end of the walk depending on your start location) with a cemented walk way along the road to the park and the Vermillion River. It runs close to a quarter mile long with benches about half way through the walk. The city keeps this park mowed during the summer months. This is an old old park dating back to 1800's. The trees are massive and just as old providing beautiful shade. There are remnants of old stone items remaing in the park, grape vine thingy, a stone fireplace and pillars. Our stay favored us with Bald Eagle sightings. 2 hung around the trees on the other side of the river in full view, it was wonderful.

At the city park you can dump your tanks. We didn't need to so we didn't visit this location. At the four way stop sign located at the center of the town, turn west, travel one block and on the south side of the street you will find city hall. There they will tell you how to find the dump site.

This seems to be a favorite location for locals to drive through. Sometimes we found traffic through the park on the heavy side but most of the time very quiet. People are small town friendly. Population is around 900 people. Town has a grocery store, convenience store, bank, medical clinic, pharmacy, restaurant, bowling alley, auto parts store, bakery and other businesses. We noticed 4 churches in our drive around the town. At the city park they have a community swimming pool, Frisbee golf, 2 ball diamonds, tennis courts, playground equipment, volleyball courts, 2 picnic house areas and a location for 4 RV campsites with electrical plug ins [2 50 amp and 2 30 amp) for $10.00 a night with limited stay.

    Tower Campground

    Nice sites nice staff

The spots are good size and most are shared asphalt pads where your rear end faces your neighbors rear end. However you don’t share a pedestal or any other hookups with them. Our site had a water hook up that was equipped with a heater on the spigot for cold weather.

    Lake Vermillion Recreation Area

The East Campground Area was Very Nice

We followed our GPS getting off I-29 at exit 79 in Sioux Falls and going straight west on hwy 42 for about 20 miles to the sign for the right turn to go up to the recreation area. It would have been just as easy to catch I-90 west as well. At the main/west campground, we followed the sign for the East Campground and turned left at the white recreation sign right at the bottom of the hill. Passing the boat ramp, we saw the pull-along sites (49-62), which are small and close to the road accurately described in forums as not big-rig friendly. The fresh water fill spigot is in a large pull-out on the right, past the boat launch and just before the 10 mph sign. The dump station is in the West Campground. We continued to the end loop and backed into site 43 (50/30/20 AMP), which was easy thanks to its corner location. As soon as we had settled in, the very friendly camp host come over to check us in. We had already paid the $30 a night plus $10 nonresident reservation fees, to find out starting this year we needed to pay a non-resident $15 a night state park fee or $60 for a year pass. We were able to purchase, choosing a yearly, online and the host gave us a temp sticker for our window. Our site was spacious enough for our 40 5th wheel and F450. The electric hookup is at the back; we needed about 30 of cord. All sites here are electric only and nicely spaced apart. Site 43 offered a beautiful lake view, which we enjoyed during our peaceful four-night stay in early May. Verizon had 3 bars, T-Mobile had 2, and our T-Mobile house internet clocked 207 Mbps down/ 3.49 Mbps up. Satellite reception should be fine in most sites except site 45, which is heavily shaded. There's both a shower house and vaulted toilets in the east area. Spring was coming alive with gobbling turkeys and cackling pheasants; we even got a show from a strutting tom turkey. Overall, a quiet and scenic stay with great wildlife viewing and lake views.

    Schreier's On Shetek Campground

    Great Park, Mostly Seasonals

We visited here before the fishing opener, so while most of the spots were occupied by long term RVs, very few people around. We were told from fishing opener until the fall the place is busy. Family owned and operated park. Amenities include playground, fish cleaning house, paddleboat and canoe rentals, hiking trails.

Guide to Garretson

The Garretson area sits where Split Rock Creek cuts through Sioux quartzite formations, creating unique geological features uncommon in eastern South Dakota. Located about 20 miles northeast of Sioux Falls, camping options span from state park facilities to family-oriented private campgrounds. The region experiences distinct seasons with summer temperatures typically ranging from 65-85°F, while spring and fall bring cooler conditions.

What to do

Hiking quartzite formations: At Palisades State Park Campground, trails wind through distinctive pink quartzite rock formations along Split Rock Creek. "This local spot is an unexpected beautiful spot in the landscape. The amenities are limited but its refreshing," notes Miranda M. The park offers several hiking paths suitable for various skill levels.

Swimming and water activities: Summer visitors can cool off at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area where designated swimming areas provide relief from heat. "There is a very nice sand beach, playgrounds, fishing, star gazing, and four campgrounds," reports John D. The lake allows motorized boats, kayaking, and fishing opportunities throughout the warmer months.

Family entertainment: Sioux Falls Yogi Bear offers scheduled activities and recreational facilities. "Everything from laser tag to chocolate milk chugging contests. The sites were extremely well maintained. Saturday night was the yogi bear parade and it was the highlight of our entire stay," shares Alec S. These organized events run primarily from April through October.

What campers like

Convenient location: Lake Vermillion Recreation Area provides easy access for travelers. "Good stopover site on way to black hills. We stayed here at site 69 E for one night in August 2020. Nice, clean campground with partial shade in some sites," writes Kathy L. The campground sits approximately 30 minutes from Sioux Falls.

Quiet atmosphere: Many campers appreciate the peaceful settings available at less developed campgrounds. "We stayed in one of the four designated tent sites. You have to park and haul your gear to the site, but it is a short and easy walk. The 4 tent sites are near each other, yet feel secluded and private," notes Stacia R. about Palisades State Park.

Well-maintained facilities: Dakota Sunsets RV Park receives consistent praise for cleanliness. "The attention to detail you see in this park is not something we have seen a lot during our travels. The gravel roadways to each campsite are groomed perfectly level. Art, sculptures and flower pots are everywhere," reports Robert O. Most campgrounds in the area feature regularly serviced restrooms and shower facilities.

What you should know

Non-resident fees apply: South Dakota state parks charge additional fees for out-of-state visitors. "South Dakota charges a day use fee ($6) plus a fee for tent camping ($17); I opted to pay for an Annual Pass of $30 since I plan on doing more SD camping this year," explains May M. These fees apply at both Palisades State Park and Lake Vermillion Recreation Area.

Limited tree cover: Some campgrounds offer minimal shade, particularly in newer sections. "[Palisades has] King, a recently built campground, sits on the prairie and provides beautiful views of Split Rock Creek," notes Tim R. Travelers camping during summer should prepare for direct sun exposure at many sites.

Reservation requirements: Most rv campgrounds near Garretson, South Dakota fill quickly during summer weekends. "Residents of South Dakota love their camping, so book a site as early as allowable," advises John D. Reservations can typically be made 90-180 days in advance depending on the facility.

Tips for camping with families

Choose activity-focused campgrounds: Pipestone Family Campground provides facilities specifically for children. "Campground was nearly full of local campers but the kids played great together. Decent pool & showers, fun activities like bags tournaments and a potluck," shares S.G. The campground maintains a swimming pool and organized weekend activities during summer.

Consider accessibility needs: Some campgrounds offer better amenities for families with young children. "Our family spent a long weekend here enjoying all of the activities they had to offer. The sites were extremely well maintained. Restrooms were aging but were well cleaned and taken care of," notes Alec S. about Sioux Falls Yogi Bear.

Pack for variable weather: The region experiences significant temperature fluctuations even during summer. Morning temperatures can be cool while afternoons heat up considerably. Layered clothing and adequate sun protection are essential when camping with children in this area.

Tips from RVers

Size-appropriate site selection: The region offers varying RV site dimensions across different campgrounds. "The super nice and informative couple who own the campground checked us in and then we were escorted to pull through site 41 with FHUs. The site was more than long enough for our 39' 5th Wheel and F-450 truck," explains MickandKarla W. about Dakota Sunsets RV Park.

Internet connectivity considerations: For those needing to stay connected, connectivity varies significantly between rv campgrounds Garretson, South Dakota area. "WiFi was average but there were not many RVs in the park for our 3 nights stay, and we got 4 bars on Verizon," notes MickandKarla W. "King also offers free Wi-Fi with a download speed of 22 Mbps, while Queen has no T-Mobile service," adds Tim R. about Palisades State Park.

Seasonal availability awareness: Not all campgrounds operate year-round. Most private RV parks in the region close between late October and mid-April, while some state facilities maintain limited winter operations with reduced services.
