    Chris' Campground

quiet place, but a few fyi's

They advertise that they have Wi-Fi but it's almost like they shut it off at 10 o'clock at night when quiet time starts which is a great time for looking up directions or places to see, we could never connect for long and streaming- which means no Netflix its against the rules(which we never saw only overheard). They allow fires but make sure you get a metal ring because it's illegal to have a fire in south Dakota if you don't have one they have them but they don't leave them at the sites or let you know they are available. Also no petting zoo we specifically came here thinking they had one because they advertised and after we arrived they informed us it was turned into a dog park i have no pictures but there's not much to see here

    Devils Tower KOA

Very nice campground with spectacular view of Devil's Tower

Stayed at an RV site in early June, 2021.  The site assigned to us was on the outer loop and directly opposite Devil's Tower.  The tower was nicely framed by a pair of trees at our campsite.  The entrance to national park is immediately next to this KOA.

The hosts were friendly and accommodating.  No complaints with the water and electric service at our campsite.  Our site (as were all the others as far as we could tell) was level.

The restrooms were clean, but like things seeing a lot of use these days needed a couple repairs but nothing major.   The on-site showers were also clean and the water warm.  The KOA staff watered an adjacent site through the night while we were there.

Note: site's were available on first-come basis at nearby Devil's Tower Belle Fourche campground but don't offer the amenities of the KOA.

    Camp 5 Motorized Trailhead

Quiet, Free, Dispersed camping area off the main highway between Deadwood and Sturgis

I have stayed at this dispersed camping area once during the Sturgis rally. This is a free camping area located Off the main highway between Sturgis and Deadwood, South Dakota. After you pull off the highway onto camp 5 Road there are a few single campsites, but if you continue down the hill, across the dry creek bed, You will find a huge field for camping. The creek bed crossing is fairly easy, especially if you have a SUV or a pick up truck. I probably wouldn’t recommend it with a low clearance car. During our stay, there were Porta potty’s located in this area. I’m not sure if the Porta potty’s remain throughout the summer or if They were placed there just for the Sturgis rally guests. This field area is located a bit further from the main highway, so it’s also a bit quieter. I am aware that this area is also considered an ATV trail head parking area, but we did not see any ATVs during our stay. This camping area does not have any access to water, electricity, or sewer hook ups. The sites closer to the highway will have some traffic noise, but the field area is fairly quiet, And the price for this camping area is awesome - FREE. I did not see any fire rings, and the forest service probably prohibits campfires. This camping area also allows for quick access into Deadwood If you want to visit casinos, historical sites, gas stations, Restaurants and bars, or just grab some groceries.

    Pactola Reservoir Campground

Large, near the water, easily accessible. Summer only though! :(

I should have checked Recreation.gov to confirm this campground is open before heading there, it would have saved me some time. It closed as of September 11th 2020, and is reopening in May 2021. Looks like May- Sept. is what's planned for next year as well. Boo! Still, glad I did actually go because now I know where I might head next time I'm in the area. Noticed some other campsites in the Black Hills are closed as well, so I might have timed my camping trip to the area poorly. Live and learn. Anyway, about the campground…

Easy to get to, good LTE reception on Verizon throughout, BIG area with what looks like four different loops, some closer to the water than others. A tent-only area, which I appreciate- those tend to be quieter than the RV spots, and the tent area was close to the reservoir. Standard campsite amenities- tables, fire pits, bathrooms. Swimming seems like an option. Plenty of trees for us hammock dwellers. Could easily see myself spending a few days here when it is open, assuming it isn't too much of a zoo, which large sites like these can devolve into.

NOTE: this is a duplicate listing of another Dyrt listing for the same campground. That listing is under the name "Pactola Reservoir Campground" which is the accurate name according to the Forest Service. That listing has more reviews and info, but has incorrect GPS coordinates. I've submitted a fix, so hopefully they'll fix the GPS for the other listing and merge them, but until then, just a heads up. Here's the other listing: https://thedyrt.com/camping/south-dakota/south-dakota-pactola-reservoir-campground

    Pactola Reservoir Campground

    Amazing lake views

Huge campsites with views of the lake. Some of the biggest camp sites on our trip. Some had more privacy than others. Both RV and tent sites.

Picnic tables, camp fire pits. Drinking water. Close to the Jewel and Wind Caves and Mr. Rushmore. About 50 sites total, with the best being on the lake side.

Vault toilets only where we were, though other parts had flush toilets.

Nice day use area with access to the lake. Boat ramps. Very popular with locals. A bit off the freeway, so no noise at night. Sites can be booked up to six months in advance, or sometimes grabbed at the last minute if lucky.

Guide to Belle Fourche

Camping near Belle Fourche occurs at 3,200 feet elevation where the northern Black Hills transition into prairie landscapes. Summer temperatures typically range from 50-85°F with occasional thunderstorms, while spring and fall bring cooler conditions. Gravel roads leading to several campgrounds can become rutted after rainfall, requiring cautious driving for low-clearance vehicles.

What to do

Hiking near Devils Tower: The area surrounding Devils Tower KOA provides access to trails circling this famous geological formation. "Spend a day driving Spearfish canyon and hiking to waterfalls," suggests Glenda at Rocky Point Recreation Area, noting the variety of natural formations within a day trip.

Lake activities: Fishing and boating options abound at Rocky Point Recreation Area, where water access is convenient for multiple activities. "The water was way down and appeared murky so we stayed out of it," notes Glenda, providing current conditions that can help visitors plan accordingly.

Forest exploration: The 7.5-mile nature trail at Spearfish KOA leads to the river and provides excellent dog walking opportunities. "We used their 7.5-mile nature trail entrance from the park to the river, which was great for walking our dogs," shares MickandKarla W., highlighting less-known trails in the area.

What campers like

Creekside camping: At Timon Campground, visitors appreciate the natural water features enhancing their stay. "I got a site right on the creek (#7) which the dog adored. Only a few other campers. Very peaceful," reports Leslie B., pointing to specific sites for water access.

Wide campsites: Rocky Point Recreation Area provides unusually spacious sites, a welcome feature for those wanting privacy. "The space between sites is admirable. I stepped off our space at close to 70+ feet wide," explains Tom D., providing concrete measurements rather than vague claims.

Evening entertainment: A unique feature at Devils Tower KOA includes outdoor movie showings against the backdrop of the monument. "They show 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' every night, outside with the tower in the background. Very cheesy but very cool," Julie W. mentions.

What you should know

Off-season considerations: Winter and early spring visits require preparation as services may be limited. "Bathhouse is closed for the season. The campground is conveniently located between a highway and a railway, both are highly active," reports Miguel E. about Wyatt's Hideaway Campground.

Water level variations: Lake conditions at Rocky Point fluctuate seasonally, affecting shoreline activities. "Water is usually calm in the morning and evening. It is a great fishing lake too," notes Billy B., offering timing tips for water activities.

Connectivity issues: Cell service varies widely between campgrounds. "We did not upgrade from their free WiFi (about average but the park was not very full) and got 3 bars on Verizon," MickandKarla W. reports about Elkhorn Ridge RV Resort, providing specific carrier information.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature dedicated children's areas. At Chris' Campground, families find "3 heated pools, a basketball court, recreation room, playground, & petting zoo for the kids," according to Theresa H.

Evening programs: Seasonal activities can entertain children after dark. "The city of Spearfish had activities in the park (about 1/4 mile away) every evening (magician, concerts, etc)," Megan R. mentions about Spearfish City Campground, pointing to free entertainment options.

Pet-friendly features: Many campgrounds accommodate four-legged family members. "They have a fenced pet area with an entrance fenced area then separate areas for small and large dogs," notes MickandKarla W. about Spearfish KOA.

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Many sites in the Black Hills require preparation for uneven terrain. "Most sites may be tough for a Class A to level," warns Tom D. about Rocky Point Recreation Area, providing specific vehicle type considerations.

Yurt camping alternatives: For those seeking yurt camping near Belle Fourche, South Dakota without reservations at Rocky Point, alternative glamping options exist. "The campground is large, so it was easy to roll in and find a site without a reservation. Most sites are on the water, with sweeping views of the sunset," Ben E. notes about finding last-minute accommodations.

Dump station access: When on-site facilities prove challenging, nearby options exist. "We didn't even use the dumpstation as the way it is positioned I couldn't get the tanks dumped, so that was a bummer. We went into Spearfish campground owned by the city and dumped there," shares Aaron S., providing a practical workaround for RV waste disposal.
